Okay... I think I follow what you are saying. I have, indeed, noticed that the best sermons tend to be preached on the very topics in which God is teaching the preacher... perhaps that is a form of overflow? Contra wise, I've noted in my own life that when I think to myself, "No sweat... I can preach (or teach) on that! I've preached (or taught a class) on that topic often enough I can do it again easily!" As soon as such a thought crosses my mind, I've shifted from the Spirit to the flesh! :-( In Him, Doc |

Doc As we draw closer to God in prayer, particularly in our sermon prep time, ideas, thoughts and feeling should become overflowing in us on the subject. If I was going to preach on the loving God with my our heart, mind and spirit I would live in the presence of God through prayer until my love for God so manifested that it overflowed from every pore of my being. Then the Holy Spirit could use that to effectively convey that overflow to the listeners. Too many sermons are nothing more than the execution of mechanics of preaching, they don’t carry power and conviction, but rather offer merely an oratorical rendition on the selected topic. We should be preaching to effect a change in the listener, either to shake him out of his apathy, make him more committed in his walk, to depart from a path leading to unrighteousness or more dedicated to the task of being a servant of God. The message should exhort, edify or encourage not be merely entertaining to the ear. It must be filled with God’s truth spoken with conviction to bring conviction. Remember God said his words would not return void he never said our words wouldn’t. EdB |
