1 | Why did Jonah need to go to Nineveh? | Jonah | EdB | 232804 | ||
With the present atmosphere here on the forum this might not be a subject we can freely discuss however never being one known for shyness I bring it up. In light of Romans 1:18-32 why was in so important for Jonah to go to Nineveh? Many have the understanding of Romans 1:18-32 to be saying that nature testifies of God to point that no one has an excuse not to worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. If nature testifies of God to the point they are without excuse then why did God chasten Jonah for his lack of compassion on the people of Nineveh by refusing to go to Nineveh to preach God and His judgment to them? |

Hi, Ed... Given the attitude you manifest on the forum, answering is probably more problematic then something as ephemeral as an "atmosphere" of Lockman's Forum -- whatever that might be. Nonetheless, because of the of the need of the readers, I will respond to your question with the assumption that it it is an honest inquiry. "Why" questions are always the hardest ones to answer. Who, what, when, where, and how are the easy ones to answer. Why questions drill into purposes, intentions, and design. As humans we are even sufficiently lacking in wisdom and comprehension to know our own internal states. For example, I can tell you that I was just startled enormously by my granddaughter who ran into my office and shouted boo, while I wrote the previous paragraph. The people involved is clear (who), the thing that occurred is clear (what), the time that it occurred is clear (when), the location it took place is clear (where), and the the way in which it took place is clear (how). I can guess, perhaps, at the motivation of my granddaughter (why question #1), but I would have to make further inquiry. However, given her age, I am not certain I would get a very satisfying answer. She would try to answer, but it is hard to blame her for not being able to give a definitive answer. After all, I cannot even explain my internal state accounting for being so startled (why question #2). Given the immediacy of the event, the intimacy of the participants, the ease of communication, and even the light of introspection, it is surprising that the "why" is so hard! Now, if creatures have such a difficult time understanding themselves, how are we to penetrate to the "why" of God's internal state (your question) at the time of the event under discussion. Outside of His explicit revelation, we cannot answer. But Jonah does not reveal this. The book is not insufficient, it simply was never God's intention to address the question you are asking. Nevertheless, our efforts to give you an answer are further hampered, since you specifically preclude the consideration of all of God's revelation, by an insistence that it be answered relative to a single other passage. What's more, that second passage is speaking more directly to the nature of man, than to God's purposes. (Wouldn't taking the whole of Romans help us to answer?) But that approach is like asking, in the light of Ohms Law, why does a rock fall to the ground when you drop it? We know that the Word never contradicts itself. (Goodness, I hope that isn't at the root of your question.) We know that any passage placed up against any other passage in context are in harmony, regardless of our perception. Consequently, we can affirm that there is no contradiction between Romans and Jonah. Ed, I understand that I am responding to your question, while not providing an answer. I have explained why it is a non sequitur. But, it does raise a question of my own. Perhaps if you answer it, the discussion would be more fruitful. Where do you find a disparity between God's correction of Jonah's attitude and Romans 1:18-32? In Him, Doc |
