1 | Therefore get wisdom, (what is it?) | Proverbs | RevADC | 135581
I was just reading Proverbs 8 and began wondering what exactly is wisdom, and how does one go about getting it? It has got to be more than an acquisition of knowledge. Proverbs 8 is so beautiful and poetic that it makes something inside me yearn for it, yet I feel I don't really understand it.

Greetings RevADC! The best way to define a word is to let Scripture define it for us. Let's look at what some of the verses in Scripture say about wisdom. 1) Ex. 28:1 says, "Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest." There are several similar verses in the Old Testament. Thus, one element of wisom is the knowledge to perform specialized tasks. In fact, 'wisdom' is used 8 times in Exodus and it always appears to have this particular meaning. 2) Deut. 4:6 - "Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'" In this case, 'wisdom' refers to a life of obedience to the Law of Moses. 3) 2 Sam. 14:20 - "Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. My lord has wisdom like that of an angel of God—he knows everything that happens in the land." In this case, 'wisdom' is used of David as a compliment indicating his vast knowledge of current events in Israel. 4) 2 Chron. 1:10 - "Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?" Here, Solomon uses 'wisdom' in the context of the ability to govern and lead a vast people. 5) Ps. 37:30 - "The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just." Here, 'wisdom' is found in the speech of the righteous. 6) Ps. 111:10 - "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise." This is probably the most definitive defition of wisdom in all of Scripture. Wisdom is fear and obedience of the Lord. Have you noticed how many of these verses tie wisdom together with righteous living? Now, notice how these themes are all found in Proverbs! Prov. 1 describes wisdom as the following: "...understanding words of insight" - v. 2. "...acquiring a disciplined and prudent life" - v. 3. "...doing what is right and just and fair" - v. 3. "the fear of the Lord" - v. 7. Proverbs 8 simply personifies these qualities. Thus, true 'wisdom' is to fear the Lord and obey Him! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
