Greetings Valmike, Here are the entries for "mantle", according the context of 1 Kings 19:13,19.. "Mantle: Used 5 times of Elijah's mantle (1 Ki_19:18, 1Ki_19:19; 2Ki_2:8, 2Ki_2:13, 2Ki_2:14), which was probably of hair. Found in plural once (Isa_3:22), where it is an upper wide tunic with sleeves. See DRESS; KERCHIEF." (1) "Mantle (1.) Heb. 'addereth, a large over-garment. This word is used of Elijah's mantle (1Ki_19:13, 1Ki_19:19; 2Ki_2:8, 2Ki_2:13, etc.), which was probably a sheepskin. It appears to have been his only garment, a strip of skin or leather binding it to his loins. 'Addereth twice occurs with the epithet “hairy” (Gen_25:25; Zec_13:4, R.V.). It is the word denoting the “goodly Babylonish garment” which Achan coveted (Jos_7:21). (2.) Heb. me'il, frequently applied to the “robe of the ephod” (Exo_28:4, Exo_28:31; Lev_8:7), which was a splendid under tunic wholly of blue, reaching to below the knees. It was woven without seam, and was put on by being drawn over the head. It was worn not only by priests but by kings (1Sa_24:4), prophets (1Sa_15:27), and rich men (Job_1:20; Job_2:12). This was the “little coat” which Samuel's mother brought to him from year to year to Shiloh (1Sa_2:19), a miniature of the official priestly robe. (3.) Semikah, “a rug,” the garment which Jael threw as a covering over Sisera (Jdg_4:18). The Hebrew word occurs nowhere else in Scripture. (4.) Maataphoth, plural, only in Isa_3:22, denoting a large exterior tunic worn by females. (See DRESS.)" (2) "Mantle Garment; covering." "Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his MANTLE, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. (Job_2:11-12)" (3) Blessings to you, Makarios (1) International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (2) Easton's Bible Dictionary (3) King James Dictionary |
