Today, reading of Elijah, I'm reminded of Saint Boniface: an Anglo-Saxon, Christian missionary to the region now known as Germany. In his day (circa 680-755 AD), folks were less concerned with truth than they were with the question of which gods they deemed the most powerful. The peoples to whom Boniface preached the gospel were quite doubtful of the message. They persisted in offering sacrifices before a huge tree, called the Oak of Thor. Finally, in frustration with their pagan stubbornness, Boniface took an axe to the tree. Stroke after stroke bit into the wood, as the people watched, waiting for Thor to strike Boniface dead with lightning. Finally the mighty tree fell, breaking into four large sections. Boniface was very sweaty, but very much alive! Many came to Christ that day. The new believers built a church from the wood of the fallen tree. In Him, Doc |
