Dear Sister Azure, Every believer will occasionally fail. Sometimes in pretty awful ways. Abraham made some pretty foolish mistakes, the consequences of which we live with today. Eli and Samuel were men of God, but they had some clear issues that were not what they should have been. David was a "man after God's own heart" and yet he committed great sin. This subject is what theologians call "the perseverance of the saints." As William Secker put it, "Though Christians be not kept altogether from falling, yet they are kept from falling altogether." God works in the lives of His own to bring them to Himself in glory, starting with election, through regeneration, repentance, conversion, sanctification, etc. The life of one redeemed by God is characterized by a general bent toward Godliness. Thus, in the lives of the people mentioned in Hebrews 11, their lives could be generally characterized by righteousness. Not because they were good people, but because God was at work in their lives. I believe that this is the case with regards to King Asa. The characterization we see in 1 Kings 15:14 is a general statement about Asa's life. But most of all -- as it is in the life of all of the redeemed -- it is a testimony to God's grace. In Him, Doc |

Thanks Doc, Hope I can make myself clear with my limitation of English. When studying King 1 and 2 and the Chronicles, shall I view that in King, there are God's comments on the leaders or specific persons mentioned pertaining to His final judgement on their lives before Him? Whereas the Chronicles record in detail the works (be they right or wrong) of the leaders or specific persons. Hope you understand what I have written. In Christ. Azure N.B. I remember when I was a teenager, I saw a horrible God in the OT. He punishes, kills, easily gets angry with His people. However, after I grew up and read the OT again, I was so much wrong. What I have seen is a God full of great mercy and love. He cannot wait to be gracious to us. There are times I was so much moved when reading the scriptures and I cried. God is so good we don't deserve anything from Him. Hallelujah, Praise the Lord! |

Dear Sister Azure, The way it has been explained to me is that Chronicles is history of Israel's kings pimarily from a priestly perspective. Whereas Kings is from a more secular or political perspective. On the topic of the natures of the OT and NT, here are some quotes I've found helpful: "The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New." --Augustine "The Old Testament may be likened to a chamber richly furnished but dimly lighted. The introduction of light brings into it nothing which was not in it before but it brings out into clearer view much of what is in it but was only dimly or not at all perceived before." --B. B. Warfield "Redemptive-history is a translation of the German term Heilsgeschichte (heil meaning "sacred" and geschichte meaning "history" or "story"). History understood as God's self revelation to mankind in the person of Jesus Christ, through whom God purposed to love a people as His own, even to the point of sending His Son in their likeness, being tempted and suffering death on the cross, bearing the full penalty of their sins, that they may live in Him through His resurrection from the dead. The life, death, and resurrection of the Savior, being the means of God's redemptive purpose, was foreshadowed in all of history, specially revealed in the Bible, that those who follow after Christ by His death to the age of His resurrection might know God as faithful to His promises, and have complete access to fellowship with Him without fear of condemnation." --from Two-Age.org Thank you, sister, for sharing your insights with us. By the way, your use of English is very good. (You will notice often on the forum that native speakers of the language don't do nearly as well as you do.) In Him, Doc |
