Confused Catholic, Psalms, are the Hymn / Prayer Book of the Old Testment and the Old Testament Liturgy. You should be aware they are also the part of Catholic Liturgy. Every Mass has a reading or singing of a Psalm. the Liturgy of the Hours sung by cloistered monks and nuns are a systenmatic singing of all 150 Psalms. The Psalm chosen for the Sunday Mass almost always connected in theme to the first reading from the Old Testament and to the Gospel reading. Jesu referred to the Psalms often in his ministry. After the Last Supper, He and the Apostles sng Psalms that were part of the Passover Liturgy as they went out to the garden of Gesthemane. When Jesus said, "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" He was praying Psalm 22. When he said "into your hands I commends my spirit" He was praying Psalm 31:6. Psalm 69 is the most commonly cited Psalm in the New Testament. The Catechism of the Catholic Church devoted six paragraphs to discussion of the Psalms: See part two of this post. Emmaus |
