It comes as no real surprise that Zondervan has finally decided to do a "gender neutral" Bible. They have been itching to do this for some time; their efforts were thwarted a year or two ago when the announcement of their intentions raised such a fury of protest by the leadership in certain evangelical circles. One of the strongest voices of dissent belonged to Dr. Paige Patterson, president of the Southern Baptist Convention. What is surprising is that Zondervan has opted to make this move in the face of a definite trend, if my sources are savvy to the voice of the Bible-buying public, toward more literal versions of the Bible. The proposed revision to the NIV would seem to reflect a further movement away from a literal translation. The NIV promoters attempted to sell the reading public on essentially a paraphrased version by calling it dynamic equivalence, a term that sounds terribly more important and scholarly than paraphrase, but paraphrase it is nevertheless. Now they are preparing to dump the gender-neutral bill of goods on the Bible market. I have never been particulary fond of the NIV and will take great care not to spend a penny on the revised gender-neutral version. In fact, it is quite possible that I may have a couple of used NIV's that I'd be willing to sell at a bargain basement price! My advice? Stick by a version that makes every effort possible to give you in English what the Bible actually says in the original languages -- not what some translator thinks it means. --Hank

Hello Hank, To do a gender neutral version would be going against Scripture. Let me explain what would be involved to make the Bible gender neutral. In the hebrew, there is no neuter gender form. The only genders are masculine and feminine. To make a gender neutral translation, you would have to redesign the language of hebrew, and create a whole new set of paradigms for the neuter gender. In greek, you do have a neuter gender, along with the masculine and feminine genders, but the neuter only accomodates a percentage of the language. To make the greek gender neutral, you will have to rewrite the entire greek vocabulary to reflect the neuter forms. This was explained to me by a man who was on the original translation committee for the NIV: Dr. W. Harold Mare. He was, when we last talked, adamantly opposed to the NIV becoming Gender neutral. I fully concur. If the 'gender-neutral' edition sells not a single copy, it would not cause me any sorrow. --Hank
