2 samuel 24 says that God told David through a prophet gad, to take a census. david sent his soldiers to do that, they did, yet david repented of doing what God asked him to do, and he had to choose 1 of 3 punishments. Why was david wrong? Why did God punish him, even though He had told him to do this,I am very confused over this. Thank you |

Dear rolly, Welcome to the forum! Although Scripture is not explicit about the specific sin or sins that elicited this time of judgment -- rather think it had to do with the rebellion of Absalom -- we do see it described elsewhere in Scripture. "Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel." (1 Chronicles 21:1). Even Joab -- even as messed up a fellow as he was -- sensed that the thing that this was all rooted in something inappropriate (2 Samuel 24:4). Pride perhaps? As you pointed out, David eventually felt guilty about the numbering (verse 10). No doubt Satan meant it for evil, but God meant it for good (cf Genesis 50:20). Note how the entire event brings fear and humility of God, out of which the preparations for the temple arise. Scripture does contain a small window into the doings of the Lord relative to this sort of thing. See, for example, 1 Kings 22:19-23 (cf 2 Chronicles 18:18-22). The Lord God is sovereign, bringing about those things that further His eternal purposes, for His glory and for the good of His own people. (See post #138132.) Good question, rolly... thank you for posing it to us. In Him, Doc |
