Greetings Sweetie7528, Here is a possible explanation: "Title The English name of the book comes from the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the OT) and is based on the census lists found in chs. 1; 26. The Hebrew title of the book (bemidbar, "in the wilderness") is more descriptive of its contents. Numbers presents an account of the 38-year period of Israel's wandering in the wilderness following the establishment of the covenant of Sinai (compare 1:1 with Deut. 1:1)." (1) An interesting tidbit: The book of Numbers continues the history of the Israelites where the book of Exodus left off. Just one month had passed between the completion of the tabernacle (Exodus 40:17) and the command of God to number the people (Numbers 1:1-2). During that time, the instructions in the book of Leviticus were given. Blessings to you, Makarios (1) The Zondervan NASB Study Bible, 1999, the Zondervan Corporation, Kenneth Barker, pg. 173 |
