The name change of Abraham and Sarah was God's the addition of a guttural "H" sound that in Hebrew signifies belonging to God. These names are then translated into English as Abraham and Sarah Abram is now Abraham or prince of God and Sara is now Sarah or princess of God. We must remember name changes are important part of covenant making process which was taking place here in Gen 17. I haven't really researched Jacob's name change but it came at a time in his life where he was changing and the name Jacob carried negative connotations and Israel very positive almost a title. Formed by the combination of the root word for Sara and el which means rule with God. Saul to Paul is fairly easy Saul was his Hebrew name and Paul is Greek or Gentile name. Since Paul's mission was to the Gentiles it would make him more like them. |
