It depends on what you mean by independence. I see it as refusal to rely on others, including God, depending on self alone. Adam and Eve, by refusing to obey God, rebelling against what he told them(Gen 3)were the first to try to gain this. Instead of relying on God, that he knew what was best for them, they thought they could make a better decision. They wanted to be gods. As for a people,depending on how you look at it, it could be Cain and his descendants,because he too wanted to be a god, deciding who should live and who should die. God made him go away by himself (Gen 4:16). (This verse also gives us a good definition of independence-away from the prescence of the Lord.) Then there was the tower of Babel(Gen 11), when people tried to be better than God, stronger than God, so God confused them and gave them different languages. I hope this helps. |
