441 I'm still looking for the answer Phil 1:14 Sir Pent 86414

Dear Scribe,
Thanks for your response. That sounds very reasonable. Paul's example of sharing his faith while in prison would be very inspriring to the people around him. Hopefully, Christians today find it equally inspiring.

  Support, Personal Note .........................
Dear Nolan,
I completely agree with you on this post. It occurs to me that I don't seem to get to respond to you very much, mainly because I agree with you so often. Therfore, I thought I'd take this chance to just encourage you to keep up the good work!

445 A divorced pastor in ministry? 1 Tim 3:2 Sir Pent 22901
  Contrary View, experience .......................
Dear Raul,
You are correct in a theoretical sense that it is possible for a marriage to fall apart based completely on the faults of only one person in it. However, I have never known anyone to whom that applied, and find it incredibly unlikely that it would be the case for anyone.

It has been my experience that when a relationship of any kind (and especially one with the strength of marriage) destructs, that there are at least two people at fault. I would be fairly certain that somewhere along the line, the "Christian" half of the marriage was also at fault.

Maybe it would be in how they responded to problems. Maybe it would be in lacking sensitivity to even notice the problems until it was too late. Maybe it would go all the way back to making a poor decision regarding a life partner.

Any of these flaws in a person (and many others that could be involved) would also be a serious hinderence to effective leadership in a church.

I realize that this is rather harsh, and that I am quite possibly offending those of our forum who have been divorced. Please be patient with me, for I only share what I have observed and believe. I still love you all in Christ, and fully believe in His forgiveness for all of your and my sins.

I just feel that we need to have a higher standard of leadership in the church (at least in America). The failings of prominent church "leaders" in our country have done more to damage the Kingdom of God than anything else that I know of.

Dear Raul,
Thanks for sharing the Martin Luther quote. I completely agree with it, and think that it is a great maxim for Biblical understanding in general.

I also want to take this chance to welcome you to the forum, and let you know that I have apprecitated your recent participation.
447 "That's just your interpretation."(?) 2 Tim 2:15 Sir Pent 117064
  Don't go too far...................................................
Hi everybody,

I completely agree with many statements that have been made so far in this thread.

1. You can't interpret a verse to mean anything you want. Words have meaning.
2. God gives the whole Bible to everyone, not just one verse to one person.
3. It is important to put time and effort into studying the Bible.
4. The Bible really says something, regardless of our feelings about what it says.

These are all true. However, it is important to not take some of them to the extreme. It is because I begin to see that happening that I am now joining in the discussion.

For instance, although God gives the whole Bible to everyone, He also does sometimes direct a specific person's attention to a specific passage. Perhaps through your own reading, or a sermon that you hear, or even this forum, God can point out a certain verse that has particular importance to your life at that moment. In that sense it is OK for someone to say "God gave me this verse today."

Another example is this post by JRM. That post proposes that to truly understand scripture, one must first understand the ancient Jewish culture. This is going to the extreme and is incorrect. Please type in the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen for more information. That thread discussed how the Bible has been inspired by God and maintained even through translations and copies so that anyone can understand and trust it still today.

I am a bit confused. Do you mean that the list of things mentioned are minor (not worth dying for), or are major (things worth dying for)?

  A concern for salvation ..........................
Dear Tim,
I know that you wrote this 3 months ago, but I would like to revisit it. Nolan recently brought up this passage in another post, and I went back and reread it. I know that you said that you find it hard to imagine a person who would do such a thing, but I believe that I may be one.

You can read my experience by doing a quick search for "lost found testimony". The question I have is "Do I fit the criteria?" To know that, I need to know what the criteria are. Therefore, I would appreciate your input.

In Hebrews 6:4-6:
What does it mean to be "enlightened"?
What does it mean to "taste the heavenly gift"?
What does it mean to "share in the Holy Spirit"?
What does it mean to "taste the goodness of God's Word?"
What does it mean to "taste the powers of the coming age?"
What does it mean to "fall away"?
453 Hebrews 6:4 Heb 6:4 Sir Pent 25272
  Further Concerns ................................
Dear Tim,
Thanks for your in depth analysis of "being enlightened", "tasting the heavenly gift", and "sharing in the Holy Spirit". I think that I agree with your perspective on those ideas. The bad news is that I know that they applied to me prior to my "falling away".

I also agree that "falling away" or "apostasy" is much more than an occasional sin or backsliding. I too, believe that it is a total rejection of God and His salvation. The bad news is that many years ago, I did just that.

This would seem to be very bad for me. One thing that I would appreciate more input on would be the type of verb used for the "falling away". Is it a present progressive type, meaning that as long as you reject God, He won't save you? Or is it a past tense type, meaning that if you ever rejected God (after being a Christian), He won't save you?

Hi Kerland,

Since Aniset has not updated his user profile yet, please be advised that he is a follower of a group called the Jehovah's Witnesses. That group is considered to be a cult by almost all Christians, including those on this forum.

His answer to you on this question appears to be in line with orthodox Christianity, but I just wanted you to know his background.

  Referral to another thread.....................................
Hello Rowdy,

In your post you spoke of whether a passage of scripture was meant to be literal or figurative. I would recommend that you type the number 19828 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen to read my thoughts on this question.

Applying the method in that thread to the specific ideas of Heaven and Hell, I would say that since there are many verses that say that there is fire in Hell, and no verses that contradict that. Therefore, we can assume that it is literal.

Similarly, there is a verse that speaks of the golden streets in Heaven and there are no verses that say the streets are not golden. Therefore, we can assume that the streets really are golden.

Now if we get to Heaven, and they are not, I won't be entirely surprised. This isn't a critical issue, and we won't care anyway, because we'll be so happy being in Heaven with God. Nevertheless, I think it is better to believe "literal until proven figurative".

Newg86,
Thanks for answering my question. I was actually hoping that "Monkman" would give a little more information about himself so that I could help him more.
As for you, I am glad that you have a good relationship with God, and your responses in this thread indicate that you have a teachable spirit (Psalm 143:10). They also indicate that you are searching for the truth in the Word of God, which is the best place to find it. Keep pressing on towards the goal (Phil 3:12)

Nsparkman,
Thanks for answering my question. I was actually hoping that "Monkman" would give a little more information about himself so that I could help him more.
As for you, I am glad that you have a good relationship with God, and have chosen to allow scripture to be authoritative in your life. I would suggest that you put that information in your "user profile" on this site. That way, when you ask future questions or give answers, people can click on your name and know where you are coming from. In fact, I would encourage all new people on the forum to use this feature.
458 I would like more information Heb 13:4 Sir Pent 112879
It seems that you are saying that having sex outside of marriage is not adultery, and that only adultery is sin. I would ask you to think about the following question. Is having sex the same as getting married in the eyes of God?

There are multiple passages of scripture that seem to indicate that the act of sex between a man and a woman is a God designed way of uniting them into one, just like marriage. For instance, in Exodus (22:16) and Deutoronomy (22:28-29), it says that once a couple has had sex they must marry.

This process of joining a man and woman together was part of God’s plan from the beginning when he made Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:24). This idea is not limited to the Old Testament either. Jesus even refers to it in Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-8.

Therefore, it seems that the act of sex is not limited to just the physical body, but also contains a deeper element that unites the spirit of two people in marriage. Therefore, all scripture passages that apply to marriage would also apply to having sex with someone.

So if the Bible says that it is adultery to marry a person who has been divorced (Matthew 5:32, Mark 10:11-12, Luke 16:18), then it would also mean that it is adultery to have sex with a person who has been divorced.

Monkman,
I am glad that you consider yourself a Christian, and the Bible to be authoritative. Feel free to click on my user name to learn more about me. Since we have some common ground, hopefully, we can discuss what God's Word has to say about your situation.

  Personal Note...............................................
Hi Monkman,

Thanks for the update on your situation. I also greatly appreciate your ability to accept reproof and cousel.

Prov 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory."

I hope that you will continue to find victory as you grow with your home church and with your brothers and sisters in Christ on this forum.
