A youngster in our church recently asked why Noah cursed Canaan instead of Ham. Initial reaction was to say it wasn't too important because it was the curse of a drunken man caught "in his nakedness". This youngster put us right by reminding us that Noah was inspired and that this curse was part of God's inspired message to us. Has this verse been abused? Absolutely. I live in post-apartheid South Africa but know many right-wing organisations who try to use this passage to proove that the black people should be our slaves. Well, we did further study of this and came to virtually the same conclusions as MacArthur. Our reasoning as follows: Gen 10:15-27 lists descendants of Canaan. As you look at these names you see names of the inhabitants of the land of Israel at the time of the conquest. The name of the patriarch (Canaan) is used here to refer to the descendant tribes who would be conquered by Israel (the nation) Joshua 3:10. Many of the same names as in the list of Canaan's descendants. Canaan was not the Black line as far as I know. His brother Cush (which means black in Hebrew) seems to have this honor. If Noah had indeed cursed Ham then this curse would have included the black people, but this is not the case. Conclusion: 1. The curse was on Canaan the nation -- descendants of Canaan living in the promised land. 2. The curse was because of the wickedness that the Canaanites would perpetrate -- eg. Human sacrifice to Molech and idolatry. 3. Why did this happen after Ham's embarrasment of Noah? Noah was clearly angry at Ham and this seems to have triggered the curse of Canaan. Pure theory here that perhaps God used the occasion of Noah's anger for this revelation/curse to be made. In Christ Tim |

AMEN! We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit at baptism. You seem to disagree that there are 2 different aspects of the Holy Spirit here. In Ephesians 1 Paul talks about the Holy Spirit as a seal and pledge. (vv 13 and 14). This in no way implies "Spiritual gifts" of miraculous proportion. This is an internal Spiritual function, a mark, a sign, a seal, a guarantee. Not all New Testament Christians had miraculous ability. Miraculous ability was no evidence of spiritaul maturity either. Just look at the Corinthian church where some were claiming superiority because they spoke in tongues while others did not. Paul does not praise them but tells them to grow up. Paul speaks of these miraculous manifestations as signs to unbelievers (1 Cor 14:22). These are Christians. They have received the "indwelling" Holy Spirit or the Seal of the Holy Spirit as a sign to God that they are His. But in 1 Cor 14:1 Paul tells them to desire Spiritual Gifts (implying that some of them may not have had these gifts). In the Language of Acts 2:1 and following the Spirit came "upon" them. In Acts 10 the Spirit was "Poured out" on them. A gift external with external signs. A gift "of" something can be "from" that person or thing or a gift of that person or thing him/it-self. This is not a divided Spirit but different aspects of the Spirit received at different times by the same person/s. I think this agrees with my conclusions also. From verse 35 onward I believe this is speaking of the Second Coming -- still to come. I think v 34 closes off the preceding section and refers back to those events. I don't believe it has any relevance in the verses that follow it. Many have tried to say that this verse does not talk about that specific generation (Most notably the Jehova Witnesses, though there are others). Many have claimed to be able to determine from scripture the date of the second coming -- and so far have been wrong every time. The day and hour can never be determined since v.36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone." Grace and Peace Tim |

The "people will say" statement is my paraphrase. In Matt 24:5-8 "For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many. "You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. "But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs." He is not saying these are signs, just that these are things that happen. They have not stopped happening since that day! The section does begin with people claiming to be the Christ and misleading many. But again also, in light of my understanding of the passage, these are evnts that precede the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. In answer to your points on Romans 11: 1. This was written by Paul BEFORE the destruction of Jerusalem. But once the Temple was destroyed the genealogical records of the Jewish people were destroyed. Without these they cannot proove their identity. Priests could not practice without proof of descent. That is why today there is no Jewish priesthood and no sacrifice. Paul said his gospel was "to the Jew first, and also to the Greek (gentile)" Rom 1:16. Israel simply DOES NOT EXIST without these records. 2. Any faithful remnants of Israel came into the new Israel before AD 70. 3. vv. 7-10 tell us about this remnant. The faithful remnant are rewarded according to the promise of God (fulfilment of OT promises to the Jews) but the majority, who rejected God, are hardened and ultimately cut off. 4. Amen! 5. Amen! (At least we agree on something!) 6. They can only be grafted in if they do not continue in their unbelief. This had not happened by AD 70 (40 years after Christ died -- Interesting time period that), has not happened to this day, and has no evidence of ever changing. According to the passage you quote THEY HAVE ALREADY been cut off! (v 20). The warning to us, the gentiles, is that if God was willing to cut off the original branches then how can we expect Him to be unwilling to cut US off if necessary? 7. v.25b ". . . a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;" This is the lead up to AD 70. At AD 70 this prophesy is fulfilled. v.26a "and so all Israel will be saved;" is again fulfilled in AD 70 since after that there is no more physical Israel. The rest of v26 to the end of 27 quotes Isaiah 59:20. This refers to Jesus Christ, who has indeed come. This speaks of the first coming, not the second. In Christ, Tim |

The problem arises when we believe our opinion to be right. I recently preached to a small house church that meets near my home. The point of that lesson is that no-one has a corner on truth. We all strive for it but I doubt there is a single person who has an absolute and perfect understanding of all scripture. I have to admit that I often come across overly dogmatic and have to fight to keep my own mind open. Viewpoints can change and indeed should change since that is evidence of growth. Not "blown about by every wind of doctrine" but clear headed, prayer guided study of the word and a "sincere love of the truth". I do not know all truth, neither does my father or mother, or Tim Moran, or Nolan, or anyone else (hope you don't mind me using your names). I hope that this forum will help us all honestly seek the truth. Defend your position but be ready to withdraw and change sides if your position becomes indefencible. Tim |

Part 2: Now Jesus tells them some actual signs as a warning to his disciples. "For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. "Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. "Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'There He is,' do not believe him. "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. "Behold, I have told you in advance. "Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. This is where I differ from many others. I believe that this speaks explicity and graphically about the destruction of Jerusalem, and more specifically the Temple, in AD 70. This passage is pure apocalyptic literature and should be interpreted in that light. Jesus warns the people of Judea to get out of town when they see the abomination of desolation. He tells of the "tribulation" that would follow and this is clearly reported in the secular history of the day (Josephus, Tacitus etc.). At the same time many would now use this opportunity to try to claim to be the Christ or to have seen the Christ -- and Christians are warned not to believe them. Then in verse 27 Jesus interjects "For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be" just to let them know that there will be no mistake when he actually comes. He continues in verses 28-33 with the horror of that event -- this is the depression that sets in after the Jews realise their entire religion is destroyed. No longer can they have a priesthood for no longer can they prove their genealogy. This is their final and total rejection by God. Verse 34 concludes this section -- the answer to the first question "when will the temple be destroyed?" This was indeed fulfilled in the lifetime of many who were there when Jesus spoke. Verses 35 to 51 answer the second question "What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age. And what He says there is "no one knows." "be prepared, it could come at any time!" Hope that was fairly cogent. It is what makes sense to me and was arrived at from some personal study very recently. Have not actually read very much by anyone else on this passage. Part 1: There were people then who also mis-understood what Jesus was saying. However I believe Jesus was talking about the people before him that day. Let me give my brief exegesis of Matthew 24. To start with Jesus knows his time has nearly come. Perhaps that is why the disciples try to cheer him up or distract him by showing him how beautiful the temple is and he tells them the temple will be destroyed (AD 70) The disciples now come to him for more information and ask 2 questions. 1. "When will these things happen?" 2. "What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" v.3. The twofold question was probably seen as one by the disciples because for them, as Jews, the destruction of the Temple would be the end of the world! Jesus, however, treats it as two separate questions. Before he answers them, though, he gives them a warning. Matt 24:4-14 And Jesus answered and said to them, "See to it that no one misleads you. "For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many. "You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. "But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs. "Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. "At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. "Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. "Because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold. "But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come. Please note -- Jesus does not say that these are the signs of the times but that PEOPLE will SAY that these are signs. And this leads to the tribulation. When Jesus says "the end will come" he is talking about the end of Israel (physical) as God's chosen people. |

I stand corrected on the number of word translated "wine". However, the 3 principal words that concern us in the Old Testament are yayin (03196) wine, tiyrowsh (08492) sweet wine, and shekar (07941) strong drink. According to Rabbinic tradition (Talmud and Mishna) the product of the grape vine was called shekar from pressing until it was 40 days old (and already intoxicating). From 40 days old untill it was 3 years old it was yayin (and now totally intoxicating) and after this it was called shekar. There are places where the context does not indicate the intoxicating value of these beverages but I do not know of any example where they are CLEARLY not alcoholic. I do not know where you found the information that says they used wine skins to slow fermentation. Please let me know your source as this is something I would like to follow up myself. In the New testament there are 2 words, Oinos and Gleukos, that relate to wine. The other 2 words are derivatives of oinos. At the time of Pentecost in Acts there was no way they could have HAD freshly squeezed juice. By then the 'gleukos' must have been at least partially fermented. Certainly the 2 derived words, paroinos and oinophlugia seem to refer to a fermented wine, possibly very strongly fermented. Which brings us back to 'oinos'. In fact, as you mention, this could refer to anything from freshly squezed grape juice to fermented wine. It seems the ancients did not understand the mechanics of fermentation (that yeast caused it to take place) but they certainly knew that something changed that fresh juice into wine. If wine is not always alcoholic (though in the case of the Hebrew word 'Yayin' this cannot be supported) neither is it always NOT alcoholic. The wine Jesus made at Cana was not only alcoholic wine, but the best alcoholic wine ever. The master of ceremonies testifies to this. I agree that they do not contradict. The problem is that we are trying to separate elements that are inextricably bound to each other. James does not say we are saved by works, just that faith without works is dead. Faith alone is not true faith, if you will. As I posted in a reply to Nolan this discussion is perhaps getting tired. My final argument -- Take it or leave it -- is this. 1. To be saved you must be "in Christ" 2 Cor 5:17. John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.'" Only Christ can save and to take advantage of that salvation you have to be "in Him". 2. -- Rom 6:1-11 "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been BAPTIZED into Christ Jesus have been BAPTIZED into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through BAPTISM into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus." (NASB emphasis mine). This very clearly shows a process. a. you die to sin (Believe and Repent) b. you are burried with Christ in BAPTISM (Immersion in water) Note: Paul says that we are baptized INTO Christ (v. 3) so that is how we get in! c. you THEN rise (from the water) to live in newness of life. 3. Since it is in Christ that we find salvation, and since it is BAPTISM that puts us into Christ, we have to conclude that BAPTISM is an essential element of SALVATION. I have no problem with your decision. I drink rarely and when I do I seldom drink more than 1 glass of wine or one other alcoholic beverage. I do find it relaxing but hate any feeling that I am loosing control so I am an extremely cautious drinker. I have never been drunk. I must say that I can sense when I am reaching my limit and I either stop totally or slow down considerably. Abstinence is a personal choice that any Christian is free to make. Tim Sheasby |

Actually, this is something that is not a big problem for me. If you are a Christian it does not matter whether you die first of if the Lord comes again first. For you the result is the same - you go to your eternal reward. If you are not a Christian then you have a big problem. I knew 2 old American missionaries who worked together in the church. The one was a premillenialist the other not. Yet they did not let this interfere with what was most important to them -- preaching the gospel of Christ. Tim |

I agree that divorce is a sin. My first wife committed adultery and decided she wanted to live with another man, who himself was also married. I was left with no option in that situation but to divorce her for she certainly would have divorced me (she told me so). But, I still believe that divorce is a terrible thing. I never want to have to go through that again in my entire life. God hates divorce (as I mentioned in my previous posting) Mal 2:16. However, Christians do sin. And sometimes that sin is the sin of divorce. Do I like that? No. Would I try and work with people to prevent that? Most certainly. Yet, it happens. What then are we to do if a Christian has sinned and got a divorce? Matt 5:32 "but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." We did an exegesis of this passage in our exegesis group and found an interesting thing. There is an alternative translation which goes like this "everyone who divorces his wife . . . causes her to be adulterated." She does not become GUILTY of adultery but the INNOCENT PARTY of adultery if you will. What do we do with the brother or sister who has sinned by divorcing for any reason other than adultery? We ask him to repent of that sin. Do we forbid him from re-marrying? I know preachers who would indeed do this but on what scriptural authority I do not know. One preacher I know asked a member to divorce his new wife and re-marry his old one because their divorce had been unscriptural. This flies in the face of biblical example. Deuteronomy 24:3-4 says that if a man has divorced his wife he CANNOT ever re-marry her "for that is an abomination before the LORD" Acknowledge the sin but trust in the grace of God to forgive.
