161 | What is a Hebrew Qal future tense? | OT general | Michael Draves | 127057

163 | children of the man are whole | Gen 3:15 | Michael Draves | 125064
"Her seed" is in the Bible though less frequently than "his seed". The source you are looking for sounds more like Aristotle then the Bible. The apocryphal/deuterocanonical passage from Wisdom of Solomon could also be what you are looking for. Wisdom of Solomon 7:1-2 RSV 1 I also am mortal, like all men, a descendant of the first-formed child of earth; and in the womb of a mother I was molded into flesh, 2 within the period of ten months, compacted with blood, from the seed of a man and the pleasure of marriage. There is a form of a related word 'golem' that only occurs in Psalm 139:16 which means 'embryo' or 'unformed substance'. You can search at www.jewishencyclopedia.com for a discussion on 'golem'. |

164 | how do you write Jesus in Arimatic ? | Ezra 5:2 | Michael Draves | 117691
The Peshitta may be a translation back into Aramaic. Look at the transliterations of "Yeshua' but not "of Yeshua" such as in Mattai 1:21: http://www.peshitta.org/pdf/Mattich1.pdf You may also want to look at the last four letters on the James Ossuary. Remember it is from right to left so it is on the left. http://www.bib-arch.org/bswb_BAR/bswbba2906f2.html The spelling in Hebrew is a little different from Aramaic even though the letters used in Hebrew are a form of the Aramaic alphabet. After loading fonts from: http://www.studylight.org/fonts/ Do a search for Joshua in the interlinear Bible and you can match the Hebrew words but if you search on Jeshua you should find the Aramaic word you want in Ezra 5:2: http://www.studylight.org/isb |

165 | What was the day of pentecost? | Acts 2:1 | Michael Draves | 116950
Christians celebrate the day of Pentecost 7 weeks after Easter. 7 weeks is 49 days plus 1 day is 50 thus the name Pentecost. There was already a Jewish holiday of Pentecost that is 7 weeks after Passover. This was a time of Harvests. Barley would be harvested during Passover and Wheat during Pentecost. Jewish tradition is that the Law was given on their Pentecost.
166 | Why is it a young man? | Ps 119:9 | Michael Draves | 116938
Your capitalization of YOUNG seems to imply you are concerned about noninclusivity through ageism rather than asking about MAN which would imply a concern about sexism. The Psalm is written as an acrostic. Acrostics might just have one verse that start with each letter of the alphabet where this poem has stanzas of eight verses beginning with each subsequent letter. Acrostics were meant as a memorization aid. Memorization of something this large might be encouraged for the young. What one memorizes when young will serve them their whole life through old age. |

Apparently they used to be as "the sins of the parents will be visited upon the children" might imply in the 10 commandments. The stoning of Achan and his family would be an example. But it looks like things changed in Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 18.

169 | please explain chapter 2 verses 1-26 | Ecclesiastes | Michael Draves | 107838
Qohelet alludes in Chapter 2 to the creations of Solomon. In the first chapter is the poem on toil with its observations of God's creation. For the wise observer who does not sleep well and can not stop his observing while he is awake there is no Sabbath except disability and death. Since the result of ones work seems pointless because it has to be left to someone who may be unworthy and unappreciative then Qohelet surmises that enjoyment of your work itself and enjoying what you can of the fruits of your labor should be done while you can.
170 | I need scripture reguarding insecurity | Is 54:17 | Michael Draves | 107505
Ezra 4:4 Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building, Neh 4:4 Hear, O our God, how we are despised! Return their reproach on their own heads and give them up for plunder in a land of captivity. 1 Tim 4:12 Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. Luke 18:15 And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. Luke 17:2 "It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble. 1 Sam 18:11 Saul hurled the spear for he thought, "I will pin David to the wall." But David escaped from his presence twice. Acts 5:40 They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. |

171 | Holy Spirit question on mysterious ways | Bible general Archive 2 | Michael Draves | 103888
John 3:8 "The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit." Rom 8:26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; Eccl 11:5 Just as you do not know the path of the wind and how bones are formed in the womb of the pregnant woman, so you do not know the activity of God who makes all things. Is 55:6 Seek the LORD while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near. Is 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. Is 55:8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. Is 55:9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts. |

172 | WHERE IN THE BIBLE SAYS GOD BEFORE WIFE | Mark 7:11 | Michael Draves | 103833
35 One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' 38 "This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' 40 "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." Mark 7:9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. Mark 7:10 "For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH'; Mark 7:11 but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),' Mark 7:12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; Mark 7:13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that." Is 58:7 "Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Luke 14 26 "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |

174 | When Is Enough Enough? | Is 6:5 | Michael Draves | 103755
This is the FCCs test on obscenity that hasn't changed: To be obscene, material must meet a three-prong test: (1) the average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest; (2) the material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law; and (3) the material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/obscene.html This is the ruling that prompted the rumors: http://www.fcc.gov/eb/Orders/2003/DA-03-3045A1.html |

175 | purpose of christmas | Rom 14:5 | Michael Draves | 103714
You are free to celebrate what you want (unless you are constrained by your church not too). Only Easter and Pentacost's timing really are based on the New Testment and Easter has been given an unfortunate name. Christmas and All Saints Day were placed where they were by the Catholic church to trump pagan holidays. So whatever you do be "glorifying and praising God" like the shepherds in Luke 2:20.
176 | Why the switch to 'Cephas' in v.9? | Gal 2:9 | Michael Draves | 103706
There are no textual variants for Galatians 2:7 to 2:11 listed in UBS 3ed but Metzgers corresponding textual commentary shows variants on all the references in Galatians to the Aramaic 'Cephas' being switched to the Greek 'Peter' in the manuscripts the Textus Receptus follows. I would like to say that 2:9 is a listing of the leaders of the Jerusalem church as it would be commonly recited with James (the brother of Jesus) before Cephas/Peter as in Acts 15:15-20 but I don't have proof for that assertion. The use of 'Peter' in a writing by Paul is actually unusual though it is common in Acts. Galatians doesn't give a listing at the end of who was with Paul so we don't know if Luke was around. Only in Galatians 2:7,8 does Paul appear to actually use 'Peter'. In 1 Cor 1:12, 1 Cor 3:22, 1 Cor 9:5, 1 Cor 15:5, Gal 1:18, Gal 2:9, Gal 2:11 and Gal 2:14 say 'Cephas'. The reason may be for the way it sounds. Peter (Petros/Petrw) versus circumcision (peritomhs). James and Cephas and John (IakwBos kai Khfas kai Iwannhs).
177 | Matthew 10 continued | NT general Archive 1 | Michael Draves | 103680
Some of these commands (Matthew 10, Mark 6, Luke 9) to the disciples were at least withdrawn temporarily just before entering the Garden of Gethsemane. Luke 22 34 And He said, "I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me." 35 And He said to them, "When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?" They said, "No, nothing." 36 And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. 37 "For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment." 38 They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough." |

180 | Crossing over into Promised Land - why? | Num 14:30 | Michael Draves | 103432
All the adult males at the time of the spying of the land were dead except Joshua and Caleb who gave a good report. Numbers 14 26 The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 27 "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who are grumbling against Me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel, which they are making against Me. 28 "Say to them, ' As I live,' says the LORD, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will surely do to you; 29 your corpses will fall in this wilderness, even all your numbered men, according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me. 30 'Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 'Your children, however, whom you said would become a prey--I will bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected. 32 'But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. 33 'Your sons shall be shepherds for forty years in the wilderness, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your corpses lie in the wilderness. 34 'According to the number of days which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall bear your guilt a year, even forty years, and you will know My opposition. 35 'I, the LORD, have spoken, surely this I will do to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be destroyed, and there they will die.'" 36 As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land, 37 even those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land. |
