103 | Sow a seed for my prayer request? | Prov 3:6 | Hank | 197385
Dear jesus1km :: Yours is an unusual user screen name. The curiosity in me nudges me to ask what it means. :-) ..... Ma'am, you ask a question which also appears curious: "Do I need to sow seed every time I want God to do something for me?" Your question has the ear-marks of sincerity, but it sounds much more like the kind of verbiage the false word-faith teachers use on the television than anything God says in His word! God is not in the business of swapping favors for seed. The Bible teaches nothing of the sort. The very clear and unmistakable but patently unbiblical implication with which the seed-faith TV hucksters pander to the gullible is that human beings can bargain with God: so much seed-faith money (translation: money sent to the false teachers to line their purses) for so much divine blessing. ...... No, dear heart, you do not need to sow a seed every time you want God to do something for you. The Bible never teaches anything of the sort. The biblical way to approach God's throne of grace is through prayer, not 'seed-faith' money: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God" (Philippians 4:6). ...... May I offer a suggestion? By means of a concordance or a topical Bible, search for and study all that the Bible has to teach you about prayer, its importance, and how to engage in it. You might try using the "Get Bible Text" resource at the right of this page, which our sponsers, the Lockman Foundation, have graciously provided for our use. Merely type in such words as pray, or prayer, and you're on your way! Welcome to this forum. I note that in only two days you've entered some 40 posts. That's being prolific indeed. As you already doubtlessly have discovered, this is a web site dedicated exclusively to Bible study and to the concept embodied in the phrase sola scriptura, and it is hoped that you will find such an endeavor both pleasant and profitable to you as you grow in the Christian faith. --Hank

105 | The Christian response? | Judg 1:13 | Hank | 196986
Hello, justme :: Preachers should not act like political leaders and political leaders should not act like preachers. The responsibility of preachers today is to preach the word, the same as it's been since antiquity, since apostolic times when Paul charged Timothy to do just that in the fourth chapter of II Timothy. ...... The idea that mortal man can usher in the return of Christ by attacking Iran, or by doing anything else under the sun, is singularly preposterous. God is sovereign. He alone is in charge of His universe. Oh my, will we never learn? ...... These preachers running around spouting off about what candidates for public office they endorse. or what country we should attack next, or making wild and highly eisegetical eschatological predictions, need to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest II Timothy 4; i.e., they need be up and doing what a preacher is charged by Scripture to do: to preach the word of God to both saints and sinners. No political reform, no political platform, no political party in the history of the world has ever saved so much as one sinner. It is the gospel of Christ that is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16). That gospel is what needs to be preached. Nothing more and nothing less. --Hank
106 | please explain chronicles | 1 Chronicles | Hank | 196918
Mat :: The preferred method of learning Chronicles is to study Chronicles! As a preparatory step to your study you may find it helpful to read an introduction to the books such as you are likely to find in most reference Bibles or in a Bible dictionary. You may also find it helpful to read the books of Kings before you approach the books of Chronicles, since the Chronicles embody many of the events recorded in the Kings. --Hank
107 | Who were the firstborn? | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 196875
Hello, Jim :: Not only do I extend to you a hearty welcome to Study Bible Forum but congratulate you as well upon your having filled in your User Profile concurrent with your very first post. ....... Firstborn simply means the offspring who came first in the order of birth; the eldest child in a group of siblings. ....... From Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary: "First-born sons enjoyed certain special privileges (Deut. 21:17; Gen. 25:23, 31, 34; 49:3; 1 Chron. 5:1; Heb. 12:16; Ps. 89:27). The 'first-born of the poor' signifies the most miserable of the poor (Isa. 14:30). The destruction of the first-born was the last of the plagues inflicted on the Egyptians (Ex. 11:1-8; 12:29,30)." ...... Again welcome, Jim, with every good wish that you may find in Lockman's Bible Forum a place both to learn more about God's word and to teach it to others; a place both to be enlightened and to let your light shine before others. --Hank

109 | Are there any scriptures in the New Test | Mark 7:19 | Hank | 196250
Melissa :: Leviticus chapter 11 does not treat of foods that are forbidden to Christians. The Old Testament dietary laws never were intended to apply to anyone other than the nation of Israel. Jesus declared all foods clean (see Mark 7:19). Other New Testament passages that touch upon dietary matters are Acts 10 and Romans 14. --Hank
110 | sex with ex-wife | 1 Thess 4:3 | Hank | 196063
Obviously an ex-wife is no longer a wife, the bond of marriage having been severed by divorce. To engage in intimate relations with such a woman is therefore as much a sin as having sex with any other woman outside of marriage. It is immoral. and immorality is solidly condemned in Scripture. See, for example, 1 Cor. 6:18; 7:12; 2 Cor. 12:21; Gal. 5:19; Eph. 5:5; 1 Thess. 4:3. --Hank
111 | will ignorant people be lost? | Acts 4:12 | Hank | 196038
Hi, spirit :: Thanks for your question. BradK has cited several passages from God's word that make it clear that there is salvation in no other than Jesus Christ. The only point I wish to emphasize is that whatever man may opine about salvation (or any other theological matter) does not change what God has said in His word -- not one whit. And we who read His word must be always on guard lest we read into it what it does not say (a faulty way of interpretation called eisegesis). It's easy enough to engage in wishful thinking. That's a human weakness that comes naturally to most of us, but it can lead to all sorts of error when we try to mix our own wishful thinking with what Scripture teaches. It won't work. It's like trying to mix oil and water. ...... You asked the question, "What is your response?" I rather wish you'd asked, "What does the Bible teach?" But I'll answer your question in this way: My response is that we should always go by what the Bible teaches and never by what man thinks, believes, says, or feels about any spiritual matter. --Hank

114 | what does aptitude mean in the Bible | Dan 1:4 | Hank | 195286
Dear lady :: The word "aptitude" does not appear in the KJV or the NASB translations, but "apt" does in 1 Tim. 3:2 and 2 Tim. 2:24 of the KJV. In these contexts "apt" means "able," and NASB reflects this meaning. Apt is akin to aptitude. If one has an aptitude for something, teaching, for example, it may be said that he is suited to or is able to teach. By the way you worded your question, perhaps you know of a translation in which the word "aptitutde" appears. I don't. --Hank
115 | will all christians go to heaven | Eph 4:16 | Hank | 195201
Dear 'gem' :: "Sola scriptura," a Latin term meaning "by Scripture alone," was a fundamental tenet of the Reformation teaching that the whole counsel of God is set down in Scripture. Please see, for example, 2 Tim. 3:16,17; 1 Cor. 4:6; Acts 17:11; Isa. 8:20; Hebrews 1:1,2; Rev. 22:18,19; Jude 1:3. ....... "Sola scriptura" is the assertion that the Bible, the word of God -- and only the Bible -- is sufficient of itself to be the sole and final authority of orthodox Christian doctrine. It follows, therefore, that all that God chose to reveal of Heaven and Hell is contained within the pages of Scripture -- and in no other place on earth, in no other book, in no other so-called private revelation by anyone else but the inspired writers of Scripture alone. ...... This Study Bible Forum subscribes to sola scriptura (see "About the Forum" listed under "Resources"). ...... Books of the feather of Mary Baxter's (e.g., "Divine Revelation of Heaven," "Divine Revelation of Hell," "Divine Revelation of Angels," etc.), which she claims to be products of her own private divine revelation, are patently in denial of the sufficiency of the Bible as God's complete revelation of Himself to man. Consequently any serious consideration of books of this stripe and caliber, save to point out their egregious errors, is vigorously discouraged by SBF and their content denounced by this author as being antipathetic to sound doctrine. --Hank

117 | leaving the church | Bible general Archive 4 | Hank | 195006
Michael :: I know of no such biblical "curse" being levied against anyone who absents himself from a local church. The "bad feelings" about which you spoke may be entirely justified. As a case in point, a decade or so ago my wife and I severed attendance and fellowship with a church of which we'd been members for a quarter century. We left with not so much "bad feelings" as "sad feelings." We were then, and are still, saddened by that church's apostasy and by God's grace found another church where His word is honored, His Son exalted, and His gospel preached in its purity and fullness. We hold no animus against the members of the apostate church we left, but pray for them that God will restore them and bring them back to orthodoxy. ..... I believe you'd need to define more precisely and in somewhat more detail what you mean by "bad feelings" in order to elicit a more specific and meaningful response. --Hank
