What happened to cause this turn? The preceding verses clearly state that the people served the Lord during the lives of Joshua and the elders. Would it be safe to say that a parallel can be seen in the lives of believers today? It seems as long as the Pastor (Joshua) and the leadership (elders) were around the people didn't have a problem serving the Lord. It was when those were gone that the people began to serve the Baals. We need to be careful that our involvement with God is based on a relationship with Him, not simply what we see Him do in, with and through others. | ||||||

To answer your specific question, the NASB translated as "the only begotten God" as that how the majority of the older manuscripts read. However, some later manuscripts read "Son" which is why we also see this. | ||||||
