1 | Eph 5:26 | Not Specified | strts5 | 221684
I went to a bible study recently and the pastor made a statement that really struck me. He said at salvation, you are saved, but your mind is not. It really made sense to me, and made many scriptures suddenly make more sense as well. I have been trying to make sense of the finished work at Calvary and renewing the mind, where if the work is finished why I must renew my mind with the word. I guess my question is, is your mind saved at the moment of salvation? |

To everyone here, An update. I followed everyone's advice (mostly, if I left without talking with him, my phone would start ringing). I spoke with my old pastor privately and told him of my decision to leave his church. It was a very emotional conversation, he has been through some very difficult times with me and I love him very much. He corrected me on some of my false idea's about his teachings, but in the end he stands by some teachings and authors who I could not in good conscience support. In the end I told him I am leaving his church and would no longer be under his authority as my pastor which he accepted graciously. Please keep me in your prayers that God will show me to where He wants me and I can be used according to God's will. In Him Mike R |

6 | Supportive scripture for woman preachers | NT general | strts5 | 218297
I know this doesn't fit perfectly with the question, but what about Acts 21:9. Now if you look at this in light of Eph 4:11-13, Obviously in this light a Prophet is someone with biblical authority and there are women Prophets according to Acts 21:9 In Him, Mike |

I was thinking of buying a parallel NASB/Amplified. I know the Amplified may not be very accurate, but are there any major issues with it? In Him Mike |

9 | 1 Timothy 6:3 | 1 Cor 9:19 | strts5 | 218246
Thank you Doc and Steve, So, is Lectio Divina, a minor focus of this church, a cause enough to leave a church. I know my pastor still has a grounded belief in Scripture. We also have an extremely high percentage of people involved in ministry (social justice issues mostly). I feel I have done a good job of narrowing down the issues and not attacking an entire ministry (I haven't done anything yet), but I want to make sure these issues are serious enough to warrant action or am I making too big a deal about it. I don't want to be someone who attacks every ministry because of minor faults, they all have their faults. In Love, Mike |

10 | 1 Timothy 6:3 | 1 Cor 9:19 | strts5 | 218243
Hi all, The church I have been attending has been involved with this stuff for quite sometime. It always bothered me, but I just blew it off, until this last week. My pastor asked me to read a book awhile ago (title withheld, E-mail me if you want the title) and I finally got around to reading it, or I should say what I could stomach! Over the last few days I have been researching the Emergent movement and Lectio Divina, then thinking more about the teachings of my church. Our web page has now taken down it's Statement of Faith and replaced it with a mission statement (not bad in and of itself). There is also a section on Lectio Divina complete with quotes to help you meditate, several of which are from Thomas Merton (google this guy). I am now starting to believe that false doctrines have crept into my church, but am unsure of how I should react biblicaly. Any scripture or advice would be appreciated. |

Young's Literal Translation Is 53:5 And he is pierced for our transgressions, Bruised for our iniquities, The chastisement of our peace is on him, And by his bruise there is healing to us. I'm sure this scripture has been discussed, does someone have an ID# before I ask a question. Thanks |

13 | The Suffering of the Church | Acts 8:2 | strts5 | 217634
Everyone, All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. I am teachable, and I feel I have misspoke. There is discipline from God which may seem to be suffering while it lasts. I think I could take the conversation into semantics and say there would be no discipline without sin (evil) but while in this life both will continue. I made a blanket statement and I will concede and accept correction. In Him, Mike |

CDBJ, If God calls you to China to be a missionary and while there you are arrested, sent to labor prison and die, you will be rewarded in Heaven for your suffering. Was the suffering good or evil? The suffering was evil! God is rewarding you for the evil you endured for His name sake and counting it as good. Suffering is the physical manifestation of evil! I don't understand how very educated people can be so confused about a very simple concept. In love Mike |

15 | The Suffering of the Church | Acts 8:2 | strts5 | 217612
Hi all, Let me clarify. When this dispensation is over and we enter into eternity with Christ will there be any suffering? Why not? There is suffering in this life as a result of a fallen world, and we as Christians must endure it. The difference between a Christian and non-Christian, we both endure suffering, only God strengthens the Christian through suffering. Do we learn from suffering and grow stronger in our faith if we persevere, absolutely. The statement I was making is that the suffering is not from God. Suffering is already in this world, God allows us go through suffering, but suffering in itself is a byproduct of sin and death and that is not from God. As Christians we are supposed to triumph over suffering and learn patience that God will make us victorious over it. So, I will stand by my statement, ALL SUFFERING IS EVIL!!! ISAIAH 48:10 NKJ 10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. JAMES 1:2-3 NKJ 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. |

16 | The Suffering of the Church | Acts 8:2 | strts5 | 217588
That is interesting Theology, I don't know that I buy it. I believe God can turn any situation into Glory for Himself, but I can't seem to find any scripture where God uses suffering to lead us. He uses His Holy Spirit to lead and I don't know that there is any suffering in the Holy Spirit. In the O.T. there was suffering as a result of sin, and God did teach His people through suffering, but suffering was not His tool for teaching or inspiring. Suffering in ALL forms is EVIL and SATANIC. It is the opposite of the Kingdom of Heaven. There is Heb 5:8 but I don't think you can argue Christ suffered until the cross, and I don't believe that was a learning experience. In Him, Mike |

Doc, I speak from ignorance, so apologize in advance. I will do more reading as I am sure the Puritans have many treasures to offer the modern Church. Without much knowledge of the Puritans, at face value my "opinion" is they spent much of their time doing "works" out of fear. They do not seem to have a confidence in the Salvation of Christ toward all who believe, but rather lean toward predestination and live their lives in fear that they may not be predestined. Something that the Baptist Church has a firm grasp on. They know they are saved and only do good works out the abundance of that knowledge. The puritans seem motivated by fear, and when fear is the motivation it has been my experience something is lacking. Now this is only my opinion out of a very cursory study of Puritans. Please feel free to correct me if I misunderstand something. In Love, Mike |

Doc, I apologize, my tone and response to you was not very Christian like. I have not studied Puritanism very much, but I have read a little history. Until you mentioned it I had never heard of Dr. Francis Roberts, so his writings are unfamiliar to me. However when someone makes a statement that there are no Puritan writings or writings from Dr. Frances Roberts contrary to scripture I think that is foolish at best. There are plenty of court documents and historical writings that tend not to lend themselves kindly to American Puritist movement. Dr. Francis Roberts may or may not have had anything to do with these events, I do not know. To address what you said of her writings, they were never intended to be scripture, just conversations she had with God throughout her life. They were only her interpretation of those conversations and published only to inspire others that dialogue with God is truly a two way conversation. I'm sure most of the Saints who wrote the Bible had many such conversations with God, however God saw fit to include only small snippets into the Bible, which were Scripture. Francis J Roberts writing were not and are not Scripture and should never be mistaken for such. Searcher56, Thank you, Francis J Roberts passed away a little after 1pm June 23, 2009. She never allowed a biography of herself to be published as she did not want recognition for the things she did in her life. I learned much about my Grandmother at her funeral where many people told stories of how she had served them, most of which immediate family was not aware. I truly learned a lot about what it means to truly unselfishly serve Christ. One of the Pastors who spoke said these kind words, "a sermon reference the Bible, and a Eulogy references a persons life. In the case of Francis, the two are difficult to tell apart." In Him, Mike Roberts |

I am absolutely positive Francis Roberts wrote that. Just not the Francis Roberts you are thinking of. I am however puzzled by the statement "very solidly Scriptural, Puritan". I find the two to be at odds, unless you wish to return to the law.
