1 | How important is the Torah? | Heb 7:12 | soterion | 98040
Matthew 5:18 gives two time references to choose from concerning when the law will pass away: 1. when heaven and earth pass away, 2. when all is accomplished. Which to choose? In the previous verse Jesus said He came to fulfill the Law. In the context this must be what needs to be accomplished before the Law passes away and the New Covenant becomes the medium through which we have a relationship with God and the forgiveness of our sins. If the Law of the Torah is still in force, then Jesus is not now High Priest because the Levitical priesthood would still be in force (Hebrews 7:11-25) and Jesus' sacrifice would not be applicable to us...we would have to rely on animals (Hebrews 10:3,4). Forgiveness of sins is available ONLY through the all sufficient sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and this forgiveness is the whole point of the New Covenant. Why did Jesus teach adherance to the Law? He was under that law Himself and it did not pass away until He fulfilled it in His death, burial, and resurrection (Luke 24:44-47). I hope this helps. |

2 | What does Jeremiah 31:31-34 refer to? | Jer 31:34 | soterion | 98030
There are two things about the New Covenant that you can show applies to all Christians: v.33, "I will be their God, and they shall be My people.", and v.34, "...for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." In Matthew 1:21 we read, "...it is He who will save His people from their sins." Sounds like the New Covenant doesn't it (see Luke 22:20)? Follow this string in Hebrews to see that the New Covenant is already established for all who trust in Jesus, Jew or Gentile: 8:6-13; 9:13-15; 10:10-12,14-18; 12:22-24. Finally, in Luke 24:46,47 Jesus states His intention that forgiveness of sins be preached beginning in Jerusalem but then spreading to all nations. His people are made up of people from all nations, Jew and Gentile. The Bible speaks of only ONE New Covenant, the book of Hebrews says it is already established, and Jesus' intentions was for forgiveness of sins be offered to all people. If the New Covenant is not now in force, then Jesus is not now Mediator and there is no forgiveness of sins available to anybody. This should be proof enough. I hope it helps. |
