1 | How would you answer the question? | Matt 22:42 | shalor | 104963 | ||
(2 Cor 13:4-5 NASB) For indeed He was crucified because of weakness, yet He lives because of the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, yet we shall live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you. 5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-- unless indeed you fail the test? I am weak, but Thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I’ll be satisfied as long As I walk, let me walk close to Thee. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea, Daily walking close to Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. Through this world of toil and snares, If I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea, Daily walking close to Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. When my feeble life is o’er, Time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely o’er To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea, Daily walking close to Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. |

With that I agree. But the Fundamentals can't be left out, they are required to make it functional. If it is essential is MUST be there. By definition FUNDAMENTAL is essential. |

The canon(measuring rod) of Scripture was determined long before Luther's day and long after a lot of NON-INCLUDED writings. Scripture is the measuring rod. Not the non included traditions. |

(Eph 2:19-20 NASB) So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, 20 having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, (1 Pet 2:3-5 NASB) if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. 4 And coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected by men, but choice and precious in the sight of God, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (Titus 1:9 NASB) holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. Im not sure where the Burger King analogy got in here! Christ is the Corner Stone and the Church is built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets. Peter says we are to present ourselves as living stones in that building. Paul say for us to exhort in sound doctrine. Are you suggesting we should kick out the foundation and just build upon the conerstone only? |

(Jude 1:5 NASB) Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. (Luke 1:1-4 NASB) Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word have handed them down to us, it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; 4 so that you might know the exact truth about the things you have been taught. (John 20:31 NASB) but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. Jude said we know all things once and for all. Luke said he compiled an account so we woul know the exact truth. John said what was written is so you may believe that Jesus is the Christ. What else could we possibly add and how would we validate that? |

(1 Cor 3:12-15 NASB) Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. 14 If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire. |

Salvation come by conviction of the Holy Spirit and the door is through Jesus. The biblical model ia actually a reverse of the altar call. (Acts 2:37 NASB) Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" It was by true conviction the preacher made no call but the Holy Spirit moved the person to ask the preachers what must be done. I have no problem with altar calls if they used to give a person the opportunity to publicaly confess their faith, recommitment,or renewal, but often these are just jump in jump out types of movement that have no real spiritual drive behind them. Gof has to be the judge of those things, our job is to teach temporary emotional surges are not true Christian commitment and that only come from the power of the Holy Spirit. The Ps 52:12 really says it as long as it is God you are turning to and not the preacher. |

What is often shocking to many who use the modern invitation system is that the altar call is just that modern. The practice, although widespread, is a very new phenomenon in the Christian church. For nearly nineteen centuries no one had ever heard of the practice. Such well known evangelists as George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, and even John Wesley had never even heard of such a custom. And Charles Spurgeon, that passionate winner of souls par excellence, although well acquainted with the practice, firmly refused to adopt it and even criticized it severely. Ironically, "the old fashioned altar call" was unheard of until the nineteenth century. It first came into being by the influence of Charles Finney, the pioneer of modern evangelistic methods. In Finney's crusades (c. 1830) seats at the front were reserved for those who, after the sermon, would respond to the challenge to come to the Lord's side. Those who were thus "anxious" for their souls were invited to walk forward to the "anxious seat" where counsel and prayer would be given them. The following quote from Finney's Lectures on Revival explains his view well. "Preach to him, and at the moment he thinks he is willing to do anything . . . bring him to the test; call on him to do one thing, to make one step that shall identify him with the people of God. . . . If you say to him, "there is the anxious seat, come out and avow your determination to be on the Lord's side," and if he is not willing to do a small thing as that, then he is not willing to do anything for Christ." The practice was designed to force decisions, to get results. So it did, and with slight variations the new method spread with increasing popularity through Finney and, later, Dwight L. Moody, and finally into virtually all of nineteenth and twentieth century evangelicalism. Peter Cartwright, Sam Jones, R. A. Torrey, Billy Sunday, Bob Jones, Gipsy Smith, Mordacai Ham, John R. Rice, Billy Graham all employed the method with impressive success. The invitation system had come to stay.
