1 | When did Jesus appear to the women? | Not Specified | ppizzuti | 124931 | ||
I have a very perplexing question about the events of Jesus' resurrection which I hope someone can shed some light on. By combining all 4 gospels, we know that Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome, Joanna, and several other women went to the tomb on the morning of the ressurection, encountered an earthquake, discovered the empty tomb and encountered two angels. The angels tell them that Jesus rose from the dead and to go tell the disciples. This next part is where my confusion is; In Matthew, after the angels tell the women to go tell the disciples, they leave to do this and Jesus appears to the women as they are on their way to tell the disciples. In Mark, it simply states that Jesus appeared to Mary first, she went to tell the disciples and they didn't believe her. Luke mentions nothing about Jesus appearing to Mary. John's account is that Mary and the others discover the empty tomb, run back to tell the disciples, the disciples run to the tomb to check it out for themselves, along with Mary Magdalene. This would be Mary's 2nd trip to the tomb that morning. The disciples freak out and leave Mary alone at the tomb, which is when Jesus appears to her. So, when exactly did Jesus appear to the other women who were with Mary that morning? Was it after her 2nd trip to the tomb with the disciples? Did He appear to them individually, after appearing to Mary? Did Matthew simply not write chronologically? All comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
