1 | Why do we need the law if we have grace? | Heb 1:1 | mathematician | 213186
We can't keep the law to obtain grace, it is by grace that we can keep the law. I John 5: 3, this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.
2 | Newness of life? | Rom 6:1 | mathematician | 212410
I think it must be. The phrase is found in Romans 6 where Paul is explaining why we should not sin. He opens the chapter with "Should we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid!" (KJV) Then he tells us that baptism into Christ brings us newness of life. Such baptism is for a believer in Christ and no one else. Thus, one receives the miracle of the new birth, becoming regenerated, then is baptised. Baptism does not save, only Jesus does that. To say, biblically, that you have newness of life must mean that you have been baptised into Jesus. If you have not yet given yourself to Him I urge you to do so. |

3 | Who are the dead in christ? | 1 Thess 4:14 | mathematician | 198364
You have asked a good question, and I hope that my reply will answer your need. Verse 14 tells of those who have fallen asleep in Christ. These are the "dead in Christ" referred to in verse 16, those who believe in the God of the Bible who have died before Christ's return.
4 | I don't feel his presence. | 1 John 5:14 | mathematician | 174389
It is good for you to have derived some humor from my response. That is definitely one of my joys at being a mathematician! I am especially glad that you read it. May the Lord bless you abundantly.
5 | I don't feel his presence. | 1 John 5:14 | mathematician | 174365
This is a most common experience and may or may not have anything to do with whether we have unconfessed sin in our lives. My first thought is this: have you told the Lord about this in your prayer time? Being my thought it may not be of the Lord, so here are some other considerations. First, you may be experiencing the presence of Christ constantly in your life and so do not notice a difference while in prayer, and yet you expect to feel more holy or connected at that time than when driving to work or going for milk at the store, or whatever you do. Second, you cannot expect to be better off than even some of the great evangelists of recent days: Charles Finney (a nineteenth evangelist) experienced a six year period in which he did not sense G-d's presence in his life, even though there were no fewer people coming to know Jesus during that time than when the presence of G-d was so obvious to him. Even the great man after G-d's own heart, King David, had such experiences: read through Psalms and you will see. And then there is our Saviour Jesus Christ who had a brief but heart-wrenching loss of His Father's presence while He hung on the cross (Matt 28:46) "My G-d, My G-d, why hast Thou forsaken Me?". Because Jesus experienced this for you, even for a moment, you never need to. Are you abandoned by G-d? Never! His love for you is complete and unwavering. "Trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, and your house." (Paul to the jailer Acts 16:31). Here is the challenge to every Christian: to trust Jesus, even and especially when we do not feel His presence, each and every moment of our lives. As A. B. Simpson once said, "Christ is not a reservoir but a spring." May you draw deeply and well from that spring. I have given a brief prayer for you that you will be firmly convinced that Christ Jesus has said to you, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Next, this situation might give the devil an opportunity to lead you astray. Know this, that "No temptation has seized except that which is common to man, and G-d is faithful who will not allow you be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation give a way of escape." (I Cor 10:13). Ask the Lord to show you "the way of escape" so that you will not sin. Finally, be sure to thank G-d for His great love for you even though you do not sense His presence. Praise G-d for His incomparable Word! |

6 | Jesus said "Have Faith in ME" | 1 John 5:14 | mathematician | 174364
You are asking one of the more difficult questions, and you need an answer to match. First of all, you must know that G-d loves you even while you are going through a difficult time. Second, you must recognize that G-d was not taken by surprise at what came your way, but that He has set in motion exactly what is required to bring a solution which will bring glory to Himself and meet the heartfelt need which you possess. Third, your job and mine is to thank G-d for His answer even though we do not see it, and purpose to continue thanking Him for His wonderful provision in this situation. Then, do not let the discouragement or doubt of others rob you of this opportunity to see the Lord Jesus work something incredible in and through you. And, do not forget that G-d loves you with a perfect love. The short answer is this, "Yes, you only need have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ." May you realize the fulness of the blessings of G-d through Christ Jesus our Lord. I have prayed for you, that the our wonderful Saviour will indeed send His Spirit, the Comforter Himself, to minister to you at this time. |

7 | Tithing | Deuteronomy | mathematician | 174354
This is a common question and deserves a thorough answer. As an historical precedent (meaning pre-Law), Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek (Heb 7:12,6) and Jacob promised a tithe of all he owned if G-d would give him success in finding a wife (Gen 28:22). In Lev 27:30-33 we see that the tithe belongs to the Lord, but it is given to the Levites (Num 18:21-24) and then the Levites pass on a tithe to the priests (Num 18:25,26). See Deut 12:5-19; 26:13-15 regarding rules about the tithe. Mal 3:7-12 contains a great promise regarding the tithe. The purpose of the tithe was to take care of the business of G-d's house. Your (and our) giving, which includes the tithe as well as your freewill offering, is to be without show (Matt 6:1-4), according to what you have received (1 Cor 6:1,2 and Mal 3:10), willingly (1 Chr 29:3-9), liberally (I Cor 9:6-15), and cheerfully (I Cor 9:7). May you discover the adventure of trusting the Lord Jesus Christ in the area of your finances as well as for your eventual destiny! The clear expectation of Scripture is that you are already tithing but you need guidelines as to how to do so in a way that honors G-d and His Word.
8 | Does Paul want to suffer? | Philippians | mathematician | 39857
In the context of the paragraph, Paul is expressing his great love for Christ Jesus. Paul knows that God's goal for him (and for all of us) is to be conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29), and that such transformation comes only by way of the Cross. Paul's former life was one of legalistic righteousness, and he was a master of it. But he discovered all of that to be "counted as loss for the sake of Christ". Not for the knowledge of Christ, or the teaching of Christ, but for Christ Himself. Paul goes on to say that he considers all things to be loss in view of "knowing Christ my lord". Paul is not after knowledge ABOUT Jesus, but he is wanting Jesus Himself. He is wanting to gain Christ, and to know the power of His resurrection. He wants to exit this life as Jesus did: by the will of God, and with God's approval when he passes into His presence. Do you not want the same? Is it important to you that Jesus says to you, "Well done good and faithful servant?" I believe this is what Paul is talking about. Paul's devotion to Jesus is complete: he wants it to increase. He continues with "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (verse 14) And he encourages you (and me) to have the same attitude. Does Paul want to suffer? I believe only if his sufferings will bring glory to Christ Jesus and His coming kingdom. Here is Paul's dedication to Christ in a nutshell: "Christ in you the hope of glory" Col 1:27b. May it be yours as well. |

9 | Prophesy of coming of Magi | Bible general Archive 1 | mathematician | 24581
Thank you, Tim. I attributed those passages to the time of the millennium. But you are most llikely correct. I will study the passages again. I praise God for His incomparable Word, and for people like you who work hard to know and understand what our magnificent Saviour is saying to us in it. Steve Hennagin |
