1 | The world during the letter of James? | James 1:1 | lisie | 160362 | ||
God Bless You, The book of James is the "experienced/practical" book in the new testament, like Proverbs is in the old testament. In fact, they have a very notable similarity for it's concise and energetic declarations of moral truth's. It contains very little doctrinal teachings; it's main purpose is to give enfasis to the practical aspect of religious truth. James was writing to a certain kind of Judeo-Christians or Christian Jews in which a tendency to divorce themselves from the faith of the works was beginning to appear. They would affirm they had faith, yet, impatience existed among them when under trials, also dispute, favoritism, foul language and worldliness.James taught that a faith that did not produce holliness of life, is a dead thing, a mere agreement of a doctrine, that doesn't go beyond or past intelect. He enfasizes on the need/necesity of an efficacious/efficient and living faith to obtain christian perfection and refers to the simple sermon of the mountain in demand of true testimony/works a christian life. This book was written for those that spoke of holliness and are hypocrites; those that profess perfect love and yet can't live in peace with their brothers; those full of nice words and yet fail in practical philanthropy. These will find their antidote here.But they must read this book until they hear note of inspiration and turn it into continuous and present works. All those who are extensive in theory but, narrow and cramped in practice, must soak themselves of the book of James in the Spirit. These were the tipe of people of those times and the message of this book will never expire! A lot of talk and dishonesty was what was going on during the time of the letter of James, a lot of talk, but no action. Love for God's work is not something we should say, but something we must do. This epistle was written to the 12 scattered tribes in foreign countries, to the christian jews of the dispersal. It was written to console these christians that were going through severe trials/circumstances, to correct disorders in their assemblies and to fight the tendencey among them to divorce faith from works. I hope this was helpful enough.Oh! and sometimes I use reference books to help me understand certain things in the bible. God Bless You! |
