1 | Saved vs. Works (John 5:24 and 5:28-29) | John 5:24 | jtbutler_2000 | 63596
That is a great statement. I am writing that one down!
2 | Saved vs. Works (John 5:24 and 5:28-29) | John 5:24 | jtbutler_2000 | 63595
I have to comment on your first statement. WE ARE NOT SAVED BY WORKS. Ephesians 2:8-9 states very plainly that we are saved by grace and not by works. Ephesians 2:10 goes on to say that we are saved to do good works. In James 2, God is teaching us that faith that does not produce works is not "saving faith" or true faith. It is merely a intellectual acceptance, much like the Satan's knowledge of who Christ is. When we accept Christ as Lord and Savior (by faith), we are saved to do good works. The works clearly come after faith, not before. James is asking someone for proof. He says to put your money where your mouth is. If we say we believe, then is that faith working out in our lives?
3 | Saved vs. Works (John 5:24 and 5:28-29) | John 5:24 | jtbutler_2000 | 63592
This whole event (John 5:1-29) took place in Jerusalem in front of many types of people. Some of those people were Jews. Because of the Old Covenant, the Jews based everything on works directly. Jesus had just finished healing a man when he goes into a discussion on His equality with God and finally His discussion about two resurrections. While the Bible clearly teaches that we are not saved by works (see Ephesians 2:8-9), verses 28-29 of John 5 are not a contridiction or another avenue to heaven. If we look on to Ephesians 2:10, we see that we are saved for a purpose. And according to verse 10, that is for "good works." So basically, John 5:28-29 talks of one of the differences between the saved and the unsaved (i.e. good works). James 2:18 says "show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." Hope this helps, Jay |

4 | What did Jesus mean in John 5:24? | John 5:24 | jtbutler_2000 | 63589
The first part of this verse is the "IF" portion of the verse. Romans 10:17 says that "faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." The verse says that if we hear his words, and believe (i.e. repent), then the second part of the verse takes place. That is we receive eternal life. The Bible also says in Romans 8:1 "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Once we are saved, we can not undergo the judgement that an unsaved person will experience when Christ returns. This is not to say that Christians will not be corrected when we sin. But, Christians are spared the final judgement. The final portion speaks of the fact that all of us are born dead in our sins. When we are saved, we are brought to life in Christ. It is interesting to note that the "THEN" portion of this verse comes as a result of our hearing AND believing. It is not something that we work toward. Hope this helps. Jay |
