2 | Predestination question? | 1 Tim 2:4 | gracesdaughter | 84635
Hi John. I don't view God as only watching instead of ruling or being in control. As I said in my previous note, God is all-powerful, all-knowing, etc. He has full control over every action/reaction in the universe. The ONLY exception to this is where He allows us humans to exercise our free will. This is where I say He knew ahead of time what would take place in each potential world. Although He is fully capable of forcing certain outcomes upon us, He does not further than His choosing in the beginning which world to create. To say that God makes decisions for individuals as the opportunity arises in that individual's life is to say that God has encountered something which He was not aware would take place. This would destroy the all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present qualities of God and reduce Him to some level only slightly above human. I think we are in agreement on the basics here, perhaps just a misunderstanding of the details. I am bad about only giving away the "highlights" of what I am thinking. I guess I think the person I am speaking with either already knows what I am thinking or is not interested, so I tend to leave out details of what is on my mind. For this I apologize. Have a great night! |

3 | Predestination question? | 1 Tim 2:4 | gracesdaughter | 84588
Hi John and Tim! I hope you don't mind my "two cents" on the predestination issue. Tim, you mentioned Romans 5:18. I believe both "all"'s refer to the same group of people - ALL! Here is the hangup. God almighty is omnipotent, omnipresent, etc. Try to imagine Him in the infinite past prior to the creation of the universe. At this time God could see all possible worlds which He could create. He knew if He created the world we are living in now that I would at this very instant be typing these exact words...He also knew that I would become a Christian at age 7, that millions of other people would also become Christians and that still millions more would choose NOT to become Christians. Despite the good and the bad issues of this world, God in His infinite wisdom chose to create this world of all the ones possible. In my opinion this is predestination - God knew who would make which choice, but He did not force any individuals to make any decision. |

4 | differetiate the Grace and mercy of GoD | Rom 6:23 | gracesdaughter | 84574
My pastor teaches that Grace is "getting what you don't deserve", and that mercy is "not getting what you DO deserve." (Rom. 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." He uses an illustration of himself as a child. Mercy is not getting a deserved spanking or punishment. Grace is receiving an undeserved gift despite inappropriate behavior. So to answer your question, yes, in my mind the two are opposite sides of the same coin. They are part of the love our God shows us.
