THe bible talks a lot about the "spare the rod spoil the child" issue. Proverbs 3:12, Proverbs 19:18, Proverbs 22:6, Proverbs 22:15, Proverbs 23:13, 14 Proverbs 29:15, 17 Ephesians 6:4, Colossians 3:21, Hebrews 12:17, They don't say EXACTLY spare the rod and spoil the child but that is the theme. |

2 | Is "tough love" biblical? | Prov 13:24 | chicks | 134988
To further define "tough love": I have heard of people "enabling" alcoholics to remain in that lifestyle. "Tough love" is where you have to let them "hit rock bottom" before they will start back on the right path. I have a 19 year old son who moved out and has walked away from God. He is angry and bitter. His attitude has cost him his job at least twice now. He has no job, car won't run, wrecked his roomates car, and who knows what else. I refuse to give him money or pay for things for him. My sister-in-law and his roomates' parents give them food, rides, and otherwise "help" them. Am I being too hard on them or are these people "enabling" them to remain in their sin? (I went through the program for family and friends of alcoholics with his father about 19 years ago.) I need biblical references. I realize the bible says "to spare the rod is to spoil the child". But he isn't at home, and he isn't exactly a child. Thank you for your help.
