1 | True Sabbath | Matt 28:1 | Tuggy | 189800
My friend, Two notes: While we follow the 12 a.m. to 12 a.m. cycle today, that was not the way days were originally reckoned. Biblically, days were divided by the setting of the sun. On this forum there are at least two camps: those who believe that Saturday is the true Sabbath, and those who believe that it's Sunday (and maybe some other variations). You will get both answers on this forum. However, both cannot be true. That's where I invite you to "search the scriptures...". The answer is there, and is much simpler than we all make it. I would suggest that you get an exhaustive concordance (there are good ones available for free online) and do a careful, diligent topical study. |

4 | tithing | NT general Archive 1 | Tuggy | 176407
Hi, I would like to encourage you to remain faithful in your tithing. Everything that God requires of us is based on the principle of love. For example, we keep His commandments because we love him (1 John 5:2, 3). The apostle John, who was so inlove with Jesus stated in 1 John 3:22 that he kept God's commandments AND "do those things that are pleasing in His sight." John was not satisfied with doing the bare minimum, but strove to perform the will of God in ALL things. The principle of tithing is no different. It, too, is based on love and on the realization that all that we have was given to us by God (Psalm 24:1; Deuteronomy 8:18). It existed before Moses, as Abraham and Jacob tithed (Genesis 14:20; 28:22). It was endorsed by Jesus, who told the Pharisees that they indeed ought to have tithed, but not to have disregarded the "weightier matters of the law" (Matthew 23:23). In addition, God said that withholding tihtes and offerings is robbery, and He promises a rich blessing to those who faithfully return their tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:8-10). Moreover, the Lord warns against covetousness and against the love of money (Colossians 3:5; 1 Timothy 6:10). Finally, 2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us that God loves a cheerful giver. Indeed, when you and your husband give to the Lord, it must be from a cheerful heart. It is O.K. to tithe for your husband. After all, you are "one flesh" (Matthew 19:6). In a marriage, one partner may assume the financial responsibilities, and that is O.K. However, it is important that your husband is giving from a willing heart. Please do not allow anyone to dissuade you from doing something so commendable as tithing. Thus, I encourage you to be faithful in tithing AND in the "weightier" matters. Indeed, as the apostle John sought to do everything that is pleasing in God's sight, so do. |

5 | what must we be until he comes? | James | Tuggy | 176403
Hi Courtlang, that's an excellent question. While the answer to your question may be drawn from many parts of the Bible, I encourage you to diligently study the short book of James. Study it until you truly know and understand it, because the answer to your question is there. James is a practical guide to true Christianity. Paul encouraged Timothy: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." God bless you.
6 | Testimony of hearing the Word of God | Bible general Archive 3 | Tuggy | 176166
My friend, I am glad to hear that you are now clean and sober. I thank God for that. I hope that by "sober" you mean that you have turned your back on alcohol. I would also like to encourage you to seek God and His righteousness with all your heart. Keep reading your Bible. Study it diligently. Keep in mind 2 Timothy 3:15-17: "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for refroof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." |

8 | where did God come from? | Bible general Archive 3 | Tuggy | 176149
Hi Tinaraine, Firstly, I want to encourage you to pray for your husband without ceasing. I also encourage you to live a pure, consistent Christian lifestyle, because the purity of your Christian life is an argument he would have much difficulty gainsaying or resisting. In order for you to lead your husband to Christ, it is essential that you yourself are fully surrendered to Him. Lastly, I recommend an invaluable resource available through Hope Media Ministry. It's called "The Eleventh Hour Evidence" by Pastor David Assherick (http://www.hopevideo.com/Media_Center.htm). It provides compelling evidence of the Bible's credibility! May God bless you. I will keep you and your husband in prayer! God bless. |

9 | Somethings Missing.... | Ps 123:1 | Tuggy | 176148
Dear Cynthia, I am so sorry to hear about all you're going, and have gone, through. The words of a song immediately come to my mind: "Does Jesus care when my heart is pained?" The answer is a resounding, "O yes, he cares!" The Bible invites hurting people like you to "Cast all your care upon Him [Jesus]; for He careth for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Cynthia, I know this must be really hard for you - too much for words to express. Please take comfort in knowing that "In the heart of Jesus, there is love for you - love must kind and tender, love most deep and true..." In Jesus' own words, "Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). You are not alone in this issue. One of my favourite Bible stories, in fact, is the story recorded in John 4 about a woman who had also gone through painful relationships. It is a beautiful story of how Jesus meets the needs of the aching heart. Please read it when you get a chance. I would love to encourage you more, but I am constrained to keep this post short. Many, many who have been in painful situations have found invaluable spiritual help at the following resources: http://www.discoveronline.org/ and http://vop.com/. I will be praying for you. From my heart, Tuggy P.S. Healthy relationships and family are important to the Lord. Seek Him first, and He will provide for your needs. |

11 | Resisting temptation | James 4:7 | Tuggy | 173417
My friend, that's a very good question. 1. "What you need to understand is the true force of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice God has given to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot of yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Him your will; He will then work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure...Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in your life. By yielding up your will to Christ, you ally yourself with the power that is above all principalities and powers. You will have strength from above to hold you steadfast, and thus through constant surrender to God you will be enabled to live the new life, even the life of faith." Steps to Christ, pp 47-48. Make a conscious decision that you will not under any circumstances give in to temptation (Joshua 24:15). 2. Notice that the key to all this is, of course, constant submission to God - perfect submission. Only when you have this mind of Christ and are devoted to God to the disregard of your own interests will you be empowered to resist temptation (James 4:7). 3. Pray, pray, pray. Jesus is eager to empower you to resist temptation (1 John 5:14, 15). However, the power to resist can only be gained though unbroken communion with God. 4. Don't consider the temptation. The more you consider, or think about it, the stronger the urge will become. Eve considered the serpent's words and soon the forbidden fruit looked very appetizing. Had she turned away the instant the temptation arose, she would have been safe. 5. It will be hard not to think about the temptation if you do not replace it with positive thinking. What works for me is memorizing, reciting, and meditating on scripture (see Psalm 119:9, 11). An excellent text to memorize and meditate upon in Romans chapter 6. 6. This final point is very important. Romans 13:14 says: "...make not provision for the flesh to fulfill the lusts thereof." That means you should steer clear of any thing, place, etc that tempts you to sin. For example, a smoker who wants to quit smoking needs to avoid bringing cigarrettes on his person, and may even have to avoid the company/influence of those whose influence would tempt him to smoke, etc. I hope this has been helpful. In the mean time, continue to strive against temptation, depending on the Lord. He will give you the victory (1 Corinthians 15:57). |

13 | eat what you will? Mark 7:19 | Mark 7:19 | Tuggy | 164521
Hi friend, You asked a good question. In answering it, we must recall that God never contradicts Himself, and the Bible doesn't, either. The Bible is one harmonious whole. Also, Jesus didn't come to change or abolish any law of the Old Testament, but to fulfill! (Matthew 5:17) That said, we must allow the Bible to interpret itself. Read the entire context carefully (Mark 7:1-22; Matthew 15:1-20). Note Jesus' conclusion in Matthew 15:20. To understand the passage in question, we must ask ourselves the following questions: 1. What was the fundamental problem that Jesus was addressing? 2. Why did Jesus say what He said? You'll notice that the problem is the scribes and Pharisees' exaltation of tradition above scripture. They had their own rituals, which they performed in order to appear righteous while they neglected the commandments of God (Mark 7:8, 9). That is the problem with which Jesus dealt. He wanted the Jews to see that external righteousness doesn't amount to anything. What's important is the condition of the heart. The reason for God's outlining certain foods as fit and unfit to be eaten is misunderstood and it not the subject of Mark 7. I strongly recommend that you read the article, "Death in the Kitchen". Here's how you find it. Go to http://www.amazingfacts.org/. Click on the "Online Library" link near the top of the page. You'll see a list of articles, alphabetically arranged. 14 | what does it mean? | Gen 1:1 | Tuggy | 164520
Hi Spiffy, I don't know exactly what is perplexing you. However, let me say that Genesis 1 offers an answer to the questions: Where did I come from? Why am I here? What is the origin of life on this planet? The Biblical answers are that God created this earth and all life in it. It tells us that God made humans in His own image so they could enjoy sweet friendship with Him - free to love, free to live forever, new springs of happiness ever to discover. Genesis 1 tells us that we were created to have a love relationship with God our Creator. It tells us that we were created for a purpose. 15 | why is the world in chaos in verse 2 | Gen 1:1 | Tuggy | 164519
Hi Thirsty, I would like to suggest an explanation to your question. Genesis 1:1-3 reads thus: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, 'Let there be light...'" You can think of Genesis 1:1 as the introduction to Genesis 1. What does it introduce? The Creation. And God as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Verse 1 tells you what the chapter is about. Exactly how God went about creating the world is the subject of the subsequent verses. Verse 2 presents the first picture of the earth - the earth in the beginning stages of creation. Remember that Creation was progressive: first there was the empty, formless mass cloaked in darkness (vs 2); then there was light and the sequence of day and night (vs 3-5); then God made the sky (vs 6-8); then dry ground and vegetation (vs 9-13); and so on and so forth until God made man on day six of Creation week (vs 26). If the above explanation is incomprehensible, let me demonstrate with an illustration. Imagine Moses sitting with a group of kids. He tells them, "Kids, you see this world, God made it! Let me tell you what happened. At first, there was nothing, but then God made something out of nothing! But before God made the trees, animals and people, the earth was just an empty, dark, formless mass. Then God made light, the sky, vegetation...etc." This is a simplification, but I hope it helps. May God bless you. |

17 | Jesus or Immanuel | Rev 21:3 | Tuggy | 164514
Hi Noveta, I have on my mind a Christian classic, a booked called "The Desire of Ages" by E.G. White. It has been widely acclaimed as the best book on the life of Christ apart from the Bible. I strongly recommend it to anyone. The first chapter answers your question about why Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be called Immanuel. About your question regarding historical evidence for Jesus' existence, I recommend the DISCOVER Bible Studies found at http://www.discoveronline.org/. The fourth study deals with this very important topic and provides sources that you can find at your local library. God bless you. |

19 | Do you believe once save, always saved. | Luke 23:43 | Tuggy | 95977
Actually, over 90 percent of my prior note was an analysis of 2 Peter 2:20-22, and how, according to Peter, it is possible for a person to (using his words) become entangled in the pollutions of the world, even after they had once escaped it through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour (please read the whole note carefully, if necessary). Should that shatter our trust in God for our eternal security? No, no! For me, it gives me all the more reason to want to abide in Christ, as Jesus had said we must. It is sometimes hard to accept certain bible teachings, because the alternatives seem wrong (at least to us). The verses I shared previously on this topic shatter the once-saved-always-saved belief. What should we do with these verses? Should we say: Um, those were taken out of context? Or Um, the alternative means we can lose our salvation as easily as a car key? Should we ignore that portion of scripture because the alternative we can think of is a roller-coaster-type salvation? I think not. Should we reinterpret them according to our understanding, or do we allow the Bible to shed light on itself? Let me say that I do not claim to be right, infallible... I do ask, though, that each person who reads this note take his/her bible and study, comparing scripture with scripture, precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little. Then, afterwards, after all the verses on a given topic have been studied, and the whole picture is painted, then, but not before, a conclusion can be made. I believe that it is possible for a person who had been saved to depart from the way of righteousness. By means of illustration: I believe salvation is like a train running on two tracks. Faith in Jesus is one track, and good works is the other. If either track is broken, the train goes nowhere. This does not mean we cannot be secure in our salvation. God has made many promises that we can be overcomers in Him. Allow me to share a few of those promises: 2 Peter 1:4,5: According as his divine power given unto us ALL THINGS THAT PERTAIN UNTO LIFE AND GODLINESS, though the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Romans 8:32: He that spared not his own Som, but delivered Hin up for us all, how shall he not with him also FREELY GIVE US ALL THINGS? 1 Corinthians 1:30: But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and SANCTIFICATION, and REDEMPTION. Hebrews 7:25: Wherefore he is ABLE to SAVE them TO THE UTTERMOST that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. 2 Corinthians 2:14: Now thanks be unto our God, which ALWAYS causeth us to TRIUMPH in Christ... Ephesians 3:19 tells us that we might be FILLED WITH ALL THE FULNESS OF GOD. Amazing! We can be secure. Without eliminating or changing any of the verses that are quoted here and in previous notes, my conclusion is this: Jesus has provided a means for us to escape the pollutions of the world - to be saved. He is able to save us to the uttermost - and he will, if we let him. As a matter of fact, He is willing and able to fill us with all the fullness of God, to bring us to the point where we are crucified with Christ, and it is no longer we who live, but Christ in us. We must be vigilant, though, because our adversary the devil seeks to devour us. We must abide in Jesus, and we will never again be entangled in, and overcome by, sin. If we become carefree or complacent, we will fall into sin (sometimes without even noticing it). If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, and if we confess, Jesus will forgive and cleanse us. Choosing to confess and be cleansed is voluntary. If one righteous person commits presumptuous sins - wilfully sins - ignoring the convictions of the Holy Spirit, and turns away from the way of righteousness, he will die. The devil would have us believe otherwise: he will not surely die (as he managed to convince Eve). But the Bible says plainly, that the righteous person who turns from his righteousness WILL die. Let us claim the promises of Jesus, by which we become partakers of his divine nature. |

20 | Do you believe once save, always saved. | Luke 23:43 | Tuggy | 95879
I would like to suggest that you take a closer look at 2 Peter 2:20: "For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are entangled again therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning." I suggest we ask our selves some questions and allow the Bible to answer: 1. WHAT are the descriptions of those Peter is referring to? The answer is in verse 20: i. They have [at some time] ESCAPED THE POLLUTIONS OF THE WORLD. ii. At some point, they had a knowledge of The Lord and Saviour. This knowledge enabled them to ESCAPE the corruptions of the world. Interestingly, Peter used the same expression to describe our salvation experience in the very same epistle, 2 Peter 1:3-4, to describe our salvation experience. The word "knowledge" as Peter uses it, does not mean a mere mental assent to God's existence. Rather, it entails having a saving relationship with God. iii. After they had escaped the corruptions of the world THROUGH Jesus, they are AGAIN... Don't miss that word "AGAIN." Here is a sequence: Saved because they have escaped the corruptions of the world; now, AGAIN... Again what? AGAIN ENTANGLED therein. Once they had escaped the corruption that is in the world (just like every person who accepts Jesus) through Jesus. Now, they are AGAIN ENTANGLED in the corruption or sin of the world. Notice that word ENTANGLED. It doesn't imply making mistakes as a Christian. It implies wilfull disobedience - a choice to love the world, and to be of the world. James 4:4 says: "...whosoever will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." iv. They are OVERCOME by the corruption of the world, or simply, sin. They are overcome because let sin reign in the mortal bodies - what Romans 6:12 warns against. That world "LET" shows that being overcomers of sin, or overcomed by sin depends on our choice. It is God's desire to make us overcomers (Romans 8:32; Revelation 2:7,17,25, etc.). He can and will, IF we let Him. VERSES 21, 22 v. They had KNOWN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. vi. AFTER they had known the way of righteousness - God's way - they TURNED FROM THE HOLY COMMANDMENT DELIVERED UNTO THEM. The message was delivered to them at some point, and they knew (not a mere mental assent to) the way of God, but turned from God's way of righteousness. THEY TURNED FROM RIGHTEOUSNESS. This indicates free will. vii. They following are true of them: a. They RETURNED to their own vomit. You can't return to somewhere you've never been, or to something you've never done. They were once lost - eating their vomit . They were rescued through Jesus. They returned (by choice) to their own vomit - their old life of sin, became entangled, and overcome by sin. b. They are like a sow that has been washed and returns to her wallowing in the mire. Once washed clean from sin; now, they've returned to their old life of sin. Futhermore, Ezekiel 18:24 makes it clear that it is possible for a righteous person to depart from the way of righteousness, and that such a person will die in his sins and be lost. Does that mean that our salvation is like a roller coaster ride: saved today, lost tomorrow, saved, lost,...? No! Does that mean that a saved person who makes a mistake becomes lost? No! Jesus' provision makes it possible every human to overcome sin. What happens when a sincere Christian slips? "These things I write unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1). The alternative to the once-saved-always-saved doctrine is NOT a roller-coaster-type-salvation doctrine. Finally, "Be sober, be VIGILANT, because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Pet 5:8). That's an admonition for those who are saved. So long as we abide in Jesus, we are safe; but if the Christian takes his eyes off Jesus, he makes himself vulnerable to the devil. "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all persevarance and supplication for all saints." Your brother in Christ, |
