Hank, you are right. Believing is the key. However, in your attemp to simplify the word of God you left out some key points of that chapter. First, the word believe in that verse comes from the Greek word Pisteuo, and it means to be presueaded of. The following verses shows how God saved the houshold threw Paul. Paul spoke the word of God to them and they were then baptized. Then they were saved by God, not something they did. So there must be a criteria for believing then, and that can be found in Romans 10; 14-17. Gods elect are people who hear, and when they hear, they believe. When they believe, they speak truth just like Christ did. However, If you want to give yourself the credit for believing, then who am I to stop you.

There is only one who saves, and that is God, and there is a criteria for being saved. Gods people are in a boundary. This boundary can best be found in Romans 8;29, but it is also threw out the bible. The people in the boundary are the predestined. The Greek word for predestined is pro'orizo. Pro is our equivalent to the word pre. 'orizo is the same as horizon. The ' makes an H sound. A horizon is a place that separates the light from the dark, and the only place you can see the horizon is in the light. So the predestinated are people that are pre placed in the light. So, who are these people? The verse speaks of people called the whom, and these are the predestinated. Strongs concordance says the word for whom in this verse is Hos, and that is normally right. However, the word for whom in the textus receipts (this is what the KJV was translated from) is ous, and ous means an ear. These people are the people that hear God word. Foreknew comes from Proginosko at this is a foreknowledge that is of all times. So, the saved are the hearing ear that God knew from all times, that God pre placed in the light. So what, this sounds easy, right? Well, the rest of the verse says what these people will do. These people are going to be conformed to the image of Christ. These people are going to be Christ like; however, this is only threw God (Job 14;5 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean thing? No one!) What did Christ do? He picked up his cross and died. Why did this happen to Christ? It was Gods will, and Jesus obeyed Gods will. Threw out Jesus' life, he spoke the truth, and his sheep heard his voice. The sheep knew their master. This is what it means to be Christ like. The people in the boundary are going to speak Gods truth so that the sheep will know their master (Christ). The word might doesn't show up in the textus receipts. There is nothing that God might do, he either does or doesn't. Jesus might or might not be the firstborn among many brethren, he is the firstborn among many brethren. So, to answer your question about how we become saved? We do nothing to become saved because God has an elect family that He knew before the world was created, before the universe was created. Our only hope is that we are one of the people that God gave to Christ. There is no prayer we can say, and there isn't any deed we can do to get saved. If we are one of the saved, then we will obey Gods will and speak his truth like Jesus did.
