1 | 3 Questions on Prayer | Matt 6:8 | ProclaimTruth | 6250
It has been rightly said that Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship. Relationships are based on communication. When we place our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are adopted into the family of God. The Father becomes our Father. While He indeed knows our needs before we ask, our relationship to Him can only grow when we bow humbly before Him and empty our heart and soul in prayer. Prayer is both a request and a gift (if done for the proper, biblical motive). We are asking for a blessing from God (which He wants to give us), and we are in return giving Him our love, praise, adoration, and righteous fear, which is the respect He deserves as our Father. Prayer changes us first, because we are not relying on our own means and efforts to control the situation. When we ask for things in Jesus' name(and mean it), we are not seeking our own glory, but His. Things may not happen immediately, but "loving one another as [Jesus] loved us" - which is Agape or self-sacrificing love, and which includes praying for others - will always have some effect. Scripture says that a thousand years is but a day to God ... we need to remember that His time table is not ours. And we also need to remember that His thoughts are not our thoughts - so the answer we get may not be what we thought it would be. If a prayer is not immediately answered, we should continue to pray. Samuel said in 1 Samuel 12:23 that if he ceased to pray for the sinning and rebellious Israelites, it would be a sin against God. We should always pray for God's intervention, no matter how "hopeless" it may seem. |

2 | Will all of Israel be saved? | Rom 11:26 | ProclaimTruth | 6248
The only thing I would disagree with is part 6, regarding Romans 11:23-24. The verse says that "IF" they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in ... their belief is not guaranteed. But praise God for second chances, because if they do begin to believe in the Messiah Jesus, they can and will be grafted in again, much like the Prodigal Son of Luke 15:24 and 32, who was a son of the father, then BECAME "dead" and "lost" (Apollumi, literally "destroyed"), then repented, came to ask forgiveness, and was restored.
3 | Is it wrong to swear or take an oath? | Matt 5:34 | ProclaimTruth | 6246
In both of these cases, you are agreeing to do what is right. When you are sworn into court, you swear to tell the truth, which is in agreement with Col 3:9 and James 3:14. When you are sworn into public office, you swear to uphold the laws which are in place to protect and defend your people, which is in agreement with 1 Peter 2:13-17. Publicly affirming that you will do your best to do what God has commanded us to do in scripture is not in conflict with Matthew 5:34. On the contrary, swearing by something that is not under your control (verses 34 and 35), or swearing to do what you are unable to do (see verses 36 and 37) is.
4 | A true work of the Holy Spirit ? | Bible general Archive 1 | ProclaimTruth | 6245
A true work of the Holy Spirit will always be in agreement with scripture, and many times it will be personal to the person/people involved. For example, a lady came into a Christian voice chat room that I was in and said that she received a prophecy regarding one of our room members. Our moderator asked if it was from the Holy Spirit. She replied that she had received and had used all of the spiritual gifts over her 29-year belief in Jesus Christ. Our moderator then allowed her to give her "prophecy". She began to speak to the girl ... but the girl was DEAF and obviously could not hear it. While the "prophecy" was a kind and compassionate blessing upon the girl, it was NOT from the Holy Spirit, who would have known that she was deaf.
5 | Hide righteousness or let it shine? | Matt 6:1 | ProclaimTruth | 6243
The acts of righteousness in Matt 6:1 are those that you do in order to gain the praise of men - like when the Pharisees would pray loudly in public so that people would give THEM the praise for being so "righteous". Jesus called them hypocrites for doing that. It's like it says in Isaiah 29:13 "... this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me." On the contrary, letting your light shine (Matt 5:16) are acts that you do in order to give praise and honor to GOD. The difference can be summed up: Who are you trying to bring honor to ... you or God?
