1 | Most accurate translation of Bible? | Bible general Archive 4 | Paul Birston | 210816
Hi Heart. The New American Standard, available electronically on this site, is an excellent translation. A rewarding approach is not a translation at all but to take the time to learn from the original Greek and Hebrew. The rewards are rich and many and your efforts will be paid back many times over the years. Of course, reading a good English translation and doing what God says is extremely important and I'm sure it's His will that all people have His Word in their mother tongue. I wish you well as you grow in the grace and knowledge of God.
2 | Why is Jeremiah as the weeping prophet | Jer 18:6 | Paul Birston | 209281
JER 9:1 Oh, that my head were waters, And my eyes a fountain of tears, That I might weep day and night For the slain of the daughter of my people! JER 9:18 "And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, That our eyes may shed tears, And our eyelids flow with water. JER 13:17 But if you will not listen to it, My soul will sob in secret for such pride; And my eyes will bitterly weep And flow down with tears, Because the flock of the LORD has been taken captive. JER 14:17 "And you will say this word to them, 'Let my eyes flow down with tears night and day, And let them not cease; For the virgin daughter of my people has been crushed with a mighty blow, With a sorely infected wound. JER 31:16 Thus says the LORD, "Restrain your voice from weeping, And your eyes from tears; For your work shall be rewarded," declares the LORD, "And they shall return from the land of the enemy. LAM 1:2 She weeps bitterly in the night, And her tears are on her cheeks; She has none to comfort her Among all her lovers. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; They have become her enemies. LAM 2:11 My eyes fail because of tears, My spirit is greatly troubled; My heart is poured out on the earth, Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, When little ones and infants faint In the streets of the city. LAM 2:18 Their heart cried out to the Lord, "O wall of the daughter of Zion, Let your tears run down like a river day and night; Give yourself no relief; Let your eyes have no rest. |

3 | Minor Prophets | OT general | Paul Birston | 207653
You might find this information helpful from the book "The Minor Prophets" by Jack Lewis (p. 11): "...it would seem that length and date play a part [in the order]. The Assyrian period prophets are placed first and the Persian last. Within these periods the longer prophets come before the shorter ones. However, no theory is satisfactory to explain the position of every book."

Hi Brad, Hank and Beloved of God: Please forgive me for not being able to follow up appropriately on your questions and comments. Ministry and family responsibilities right now are very intense. 5 | this mean baptism saves you? | Acts 2:38 | Paul Birston | 201949
Hi belovedofgod: God saves us by several things working together including the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:1-11), the blood of Jesus, grace, faith and baptism (lit. immersion). It is into the likeness of Jesus' death and resurrection that we are baptized and raised (Romans 6:1-11). Another helpful passage explaining the relationship between Jesus' death for our sins and baptism is 1 Peter 3:18-22, "For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to him." May God bless you and guide you in your walk with Him and growth in the grace and knowledge of Jesus, Paul |

9 | Questions about Peter- Rock andkeys | Matt 16:16 | Paul Birston | 188911
Hi Christian 2003 One very helpful interpretation of Jesus' statement in its context is that Jesus will build His church on the basis of the truth that He is "the Christ, the Son of the living God." This is the confession that Peter makes. God revealed to him. The recognition of Jesus as the Son of God as revealed by the Father would seem to be the highlight of this passage rather than the person of Peter. You will find many key verses throughout the New Testament that support the truth that Jesus, the Son of the Living God, is the foundation of His church. 'Hope this helps, Paul Birston |

10 | Is there one or two Christain baptism's? | Eph 4:5 | Paul Birston | 184954
Hi UnityIII To your first question in Ephesians 4:5 Paul confirms there is one baptism. To your second, I hope it is helpful to know that there are indeed many congregations of the Lord's church that are operating with one baptism. In baptism we receive the forgiveness of sins, the gift of God's Holy Spirit and we are clothed in Christ (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:1-11; Galatians 3:27; 1 Peter 3:21). There are many wonderful things happening at once and I think this is why Paul could teach what he did. I hope this is a helpful to start to answering your questions. Paul |

11 | Baptized before serving in choir | 1 Cor 12:13 | Paul Birston | 183302
Dear Doc, Azure, Bradk, CDBJ, Doc, Justme, Jeff Thank you for your thoughts. The perspective that God is the audience of worship is a lovely and important idea, He is the one we worship in "spirit and truth" (John 14:24). Scripture teaches us that it is important to balance this with the edifying nature of worship for all the members of the church as Paul taught: "Let all things be done for edification" (1 Corinthians 14:26; Romans 14:19), for building up the church. Paul says some beautiful things about this balance of the "horizontal" and "vertical" dimensions of worship which involve the whole congregation when he writes: "be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19); "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God" (Colossians 3:16). Paul emphasizes that our worship is from our hearts to God but as we do this in our assembling together and singing we also teach and build each other up. Thanks again for openly sharing your thoughts. Paul |

13 | Tongues mean Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:38 | Paul Birston | 181575
Hello WTB. In response to your questions, we note that Paul writes that there is “one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5b). Paul teaches about one baptism. I believe Paul’s, and Peter’s, answer to your question is not one “or” the other but both “and.” In baptism we are immersed into Christ and His death, our sins are forgiven and we receive God’s Holy Spirit and are raised to walk in newness of life in the Spirit all at the same memorable time. This is the beauty of God’s purpose for it as the Scriptures reveal. If you haven’t already done so, you would likely profit greatly from studying all the New Testament references to baptism in their historical and doctrinal (teaching) contexts. I found this very worthwhile as I struggled earnestly for a long time with the same questions you raise. It is encouraging to know from Romans 6:3 that the Roman Christians didn’t understand everything perfectly at the moment of their baptism and we too grow in our understanding and knowledge of God and the grace of Jesus. I hope this is of some value. Your faith in God and interest in His Word are encouraging, Paul |

14 | Tongues mean Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:38 | Paul Birston | 181559
Dear WTB: It should be reassuring to you and for all Christians to know that there is a specific known time in one's response to God at which time a believer receives God's Holy Spirit. Peter made this clear on the Day of Pentecost when he answered those who asked what they should do in response to the gospel of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection: "And Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). Paul spoke further about this important time when he wrote in Romans chapter 6, "Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection" (Romans 6:3-5). All Christians should have peace of mind in knowing that at the moment when they are baptized into Christ they are united with Him and receive His Spirit. |

Maggievt Here are three verses I find helpful from Habakkuk: 3:17 Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls, 3:18 Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. 3:19 The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds' feet, And makes me walk on my high places. |
