1 | What type of "magic" do magi do? | Matt 2:1 | Pastor Shaun | 164364
What is more appropriate in this sacred story than God reaching the world through His Son? That the pagan world was responding is only a testament to the real need the world has for truth, and God's willingness to reach them. Who is to say that the shepherds were faithful men? The point is God used blue colar workers to proclaim truth, and foreign aristocrates to bow down. I think the story rocks!

3 | What type of "magic" do magi do? | Matt 2:1 | Pastor Shaun | 164362
Were the Magi using the star for divination purposes? I think because the bible confirms the existance of the star the Magi were responding to a true sign from God. Were they telling future events, or responding to an actual event?
4 | Christ's Birth revealed to Astrologers? | Matt 2:1 | Pastor Shaun | 164361
There are several books out that explore the concept that the Zodiac is an ancient form of the gospel beginning with Virgo the virgin and ending with Leo the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. They have some interesting points. Satan has attempted to corrupt and twist all that God has designed. It could very well be that modern astrology is his attempt to mask yet another form of the gospel. If this is the case, we know that Daniel was placed in charge of the magi and could have briefed them on this "gospel in the stars" enough to cause them to take such an industrious journey to look for a "King of the Jews". There are also several books addressing what exactly the star was. They are plausible explanations; however, ultimately a star that you can follow a distance of a few miles must be something more than a star. I have found that when I percieve an impropriety with scripture it usually means I have filtered the text with a cultural filter. Things that today are associated with evil, may have a more nobel origin. |

5 | Did the Magi visit Bethlehem or Nazareth | Matt 2:1 | Pastor Shaun | 164359
We do not know how long Mary and Joseph remained in Bethlehem. Luke implies that they left following Jesus dedication. We should not be quick to assume that the Magi arrived two years after the birth of Christ. The text only implies that it was two years after the Magi noticed the star. Nothing indicates that the star appeared at His birth. It was a sign for His birth. Herod killing all infants under two years of age could also be influenced by his paranoia. The text is open enough to support the Magi's arrival anywhere from days to two years after Christ's birth. NOTE: Does anyone know if biblical Jewish culture calculated age different from our european method. Several asian cultures consider someone to be one year old at birth. This would impact the interpretation of this text. It also does not say that the Magi followed the star only that they responded to it. The star's location and constellation may have been enough information for them to look for a King of the Jews. We often read into the text details that are not there but that we have recieved through tradition, song, and media. |
