Good Morning BradK: Romans 14 exactly nails it - as does your reference to "spiritual maturity" (EPB aside, what an amazing little gem of info THAT was!). Romans 14 speaks of a "weaker" Believer - not necessarily a "new" Believer - but weaker - not as spiritually mature. And he is not to be judged or condemned, simply because he is not as spiritually mature - because he is still doing all things in honor of and for the Lord. But, are the "spiritually mature" obligated, or should I say, MORE obligated to deal with those situations that are NOT in honor of and for the Lord. A member of the church (a single mom) has a teenage daughter (17), who is pregnant with her second out-of-wedlock child. In modern churches the only action taken in this matter is gossip. No authority (Bibilically outlined authority) is determined or applied. The church as a whole is less for it. Does "orthodox Christianity" (for clarity, the ideal not the Community!) over-ride this lapse. Or will this church, as a body, suffer consequences of this lack. Romans 14, to me, implies we have much more responsibility than maintaining core beliefs. Much more responsibility as individuals to our Lord, and much more responsibily to our church. I am a Sabatarian, by personal choice. While I honor my Lord every day - I take Saturday as a complete and total day of rest and fellowship with my God. I do not consider this to be a matter of Salvation, but rather a matter of spiritual maturity. But, technically, since this is one of the 10 Commandments (and therefore, surely part of "orthodox Christianity") is it a part of the core beliefs that has slid away? The past few mornings it has been such a pleasure and delight to watch the sun come up while discoursing with fellow Believers. Thank you for the participation - and have a wonderful day in Him! Good Morning BradK! My question was quite sincere - I'm sorry if it sounded cynical or sarcastic. It is a subject I take very seriously. Thank you for your suggestions. I have read Dr. Spurgeon. I have never heard of Dr. Martin, but William Evans' work is familiar. I have also read Tozier, and Josephus, and Barclay's entire commentary. Orthodox Christianity sounds like something we could basically all understand and agree upon. Whether Baptist, Catholic, Fundamentalist or Pentacostal, Christians one and all, and grounded in these "truths". I have a very close Catholic friend. We agree that one of the tenents of the faith is the virgin birth. I contend it was essential, for Jesus' blood to be both man and God. He says Mary was different from other women - and that "specialness" in her was essential. Is the idea of Orthodox Christianity sufficient to override the blasphemy and heresy in today's churches? Can a person remain in a church which condones some unsound doctrines as long as the conditions of "Orthodox Christianity" are there? My answer to the question I asked you would have been, read the Gospels until you know them by "heart"! Trust no other source. All others are man-made and subject to error. When you spoke of "Orthodox Christianity", I thought perhaps you knew of a resource with difinitive info; a catechism of Christianity, if you will. Perhaps, one day, some day . . . Have a glorious day in Our Lord, sir. KSR |

Mark - well stated, very well stated. And, I agree with you. Thank you. KSR

Thanks BradK for your comment, I appreciate it. You speak of Orthodox Christianity as if you know it. Can you tell me where or how? I have been looking for a long time - and basically find Christians only disagree on doctrine. Do you know of a source of difinitive explanation? |

I'm sorry - your term "hyper-individualistic" is completely foreign to me. My understanding of Christianity is just that - completely individualist and very personal. Do we repent as a group? Are we baptised as a group? Are we presented to The Throne at Judgement as a group? Is our name in The Book of Life as a group? When Peter asked to join Jesus walking on the water - why didn't all the guys get out of the boat? I would certainly consider that to be a "hyper-individualistic" experience! In John 21:15-17 Jesus is speaking to Peter and asking him if he loves Jesus more than these others. Not to negate the group. Community is what it's all about "Love each other as I have loved you". But even that does not put the group above the individual. In in-dwelling of the Spirit, joy, peace, love - exist in the individual. I may recognize Him in you - and thereby join with you to share Him - but I cannot acquire those things simply because I am part of a group. It never occured to me that my relationship with Him wasn't personal. When I first read the Bible, to prove to a Christian friend all the contradictions it contained, He convicted me in the first chapters of Matthew - I don't understand how that could be anything but personal. How could that experience be a group issue? Community is vital to the Believer. One of my fondest wishes is to belong to a First Century type of community. To live with and be surrounded by people who know Him and love Him as I do - would be . . . heaven. But I have yet to find a "church" of any orthodoxy that satisfies my hunger for community. In that first year that I read the Bible - I had many, many personal experiences. When He said be not concerned for what you eat - I quit eating - said "okay, you feed me". I fasted (not knowing it was fasting) for three days (not knowing there was any significance to three-days) and had the most incredible "experience" while reading Hebrews, for the first time, that I have ever had. How could that have been a group experience? My life's purpose since first reading the Bible - Philippians "My determined purpose is that I may know Him". Is that the corporate "I"? I had the experience of leading a friend to believe - once she was baptised, I asked my Pastor where new Believers go to learn the rules. He told me, it was one on one - my job to teach her the rules. I know now that is not Biblical - but there is still no place in the modern church (as there was in the First Century Church) where the experienced mentor to the new borns. Every Scripture that comes to mind - leaving the flock to find the one stray sheep, the white stone with my new name - known only to Him, letting Thomas place his hand in the wound in His side . . . hyper-individualistic understandings? |

Good Morning kalos! I completely disagree with you. While I agree we should not require some sort of feeling to accept and believe what is written - but rather, believe and obey simply because it IS written. The Word is Jesus himself. He and the Spirit teach and direct us of and to the Father. Your info implies I need some human to know and understand. How do I know what the "human" is teaching is correct - if I don't search out and prove it with "me, God and my Bible"? I find "human" and "sound doctrinal foundation" usually severly limit knowledge and wisdom. Better to take that as a base - and let The Word speak and reveal. |

7 | Jesus let deeper means pass-Peter's loss | John 21:15 | KSR | 156011
God's day indeed Searcher, and the same to you. Thank you for the suggestion to read the other threads - and I did so. But, I aready knew this info. If Jesus were to ask me, "Do you love me as you love the Father - and I answered I love you as a friend" I would feel I'd missed a huge opportunity. Similar to the way a wife would feel if her husband said, "I love you like a sister!" You can love a sister very deeply and sincerely - but it has no comparison to the depth and breadth of love you can have for a wife. I feel Peter missed this opportunity for a deeper, closer "love" and Jesus let it pass. The loss to Peter never ceases to move me! |

8 | why does Jesus not correct Peter on love | John 21:15 | KSR | 155992
In John 21:15-17 Jesus and Peter are having a conversation about "love". In the Amplified, Jesus seems to be having a different conversation than Peter. Why does Jesus leave the conversation as it is - not correcting Peter in his perception of what Jesus is asking?
9 | matt. 16:15-18 should they believe us? | Mark 16:18 | KSR | 155991
blackbox: I have seen and addressed demon-possessed. I have seen, experienced and participated in healings. I have seen many people speak in tongues. I believe God grants a tongue to a new Believer, and is a personal communication between the Believer and Him. I have seen the Gift of Tongues and the Gift of Interpretation. I have also seen many cases of tongues being faked. I think it is very obvious. I believe "snake-handling" as a religious event is pagen. I believe (as was the case with Paul) if a Believer has an experience with a snake - or injests something poisonous - it will have no effect. I believe every word of the Bible is true and holy - and I believe that Jesus Christ atoned for every single hurt, sickness and sin with His precious Blood on the Cross - every single one. The Book of Hebrews discusses Jesus as our High Priest before the Father. He is the reality of what was imitated in the Tabernacle of the Old Testament. I don't believe in "testing" Him. I have been a fan of the Amplified Bible for nearly 30 years for one reason - the Amplified Bible is the only one that defines "believe" as "cling to, trust in, rely on". Walking every day with Him - and believing every word as true - He will bring experiences to you giving you the opportunity to "believe". Demons, healings, snakes and poison all become part of the scenery. In my opinion - well worth the journey. Don't pursue signs, pursue The Lord. The signs are a part of His world - and others will "believe" because they will see Him in you. |
