1 | A bit of racism; a lot of sarcasm. | Jer 13:23 | Fred LaMaster | 82870 | ||
"Can the Ethiopian change his skin" It is interesting to note that he didn't say, "Can the Greek change his skin" or "Can the Jew change his skin". Why would only an Ethiopian want to change his skin? Yes, even a Biblical prophet living 500 years before the birth of Christ showed a hint of racism. "Or the leopard his spots?" One of many Biblical phrases still in common use today. "Then you also can do good Who are accustomed to doing evil." Judging by the context of this sentence, the sentences immediately preceding and following this, this is an extremely sarcastic comment. As if the author meant to follow this with, "I don't think so!" It is interesting to compare this translations with other ones where the word order has been changed or modified to say something like, "Neither can you do good", thus removing apparent intended sarcasm. |
