1 | Is simple honesty in conflict w/ signing | Matt 5:33 | AlisonKay | 160595
Hello. I am not a bible scholar. I am just a fellow Christian developing my personal relationship with Jesus. So, please do not think I am judging, when I say that I think perhaps you have taken the one verse out of context. When read with verses 33-37 (subheading Jesus Teaches About Vows - NIV) Jesus was explaining the importance of telling the truth and being honest. People break promises and use vows casually and carelessly. Keeping promises and vows is important because it builds trust and makes human relationships possible. Jesus was condemning making vows or takng oaths casually, giving your word and knowing you intend to break it, swearing falsely in God's name. Oaths are needed in certain situations because we live in a sinful world that breeds distrust (paraphrase, NIV life applications 5:33ff). I would also suggest the following verses: James 5:12, Exodus 20:7, Leviticus 19:12; Numbers 30:1-2 and Deut 19:16-20. So - If you are signing your name to something truthfully and honestly then your yes, is yes (or no is no). As for locking your doors, I don't believe that equates with "signing your name." So to address that, we live in a sinful/fallen world wherein Satan can get his way. Gen. 3:1-6The fact that we are Christians does not mean we get to experience Heaven on Earth, it means we will be able to experience Heaven in Heaven. Luke 21:18. 1 Cor. 15:50-53 Unfortunately, there or those who will listen to Satan and choose to follow his ways. God wants us to be safe John 10:28-29; Matt.5:29-30 and healthy. You refer to "locked gate in Acts 12". I've checked my bible, the application notes in my bible and the BibleGateway search engine. The only reference I find in Acts 12 to gates is 12:10 "... the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself..." I don't understand why you feel this is telling us it is sinful to lock our doors. I hope this helps. |

2 | Kissing | James | AlisonKay | 160593
Hi. From my perspective, I would suggest that you read the book of James. It is only 5 chapters. But boy oh boy does it pack a punch. I think, of particular note to your circumstances would be 1:13-18 and 4:1-3. I hope you find this book of the bible as enlightening as I did. It is hard to believe most of the bible was written over 2000 years ago. |

Matt26:40-49 Betrayal of Jesus by Judas with a kiss -- I teach a jr. high sunday school class -- this was part of last week's lesson -- some of the kids were "grossed out" by the "kiss". I explained that I believed that "handshake" was not a greeting at this time. That the "kiss" was a customary greeting between close friends and/or family. I would like to verify this. Can anyone help? Thanks
