I think it is important to examine the assumed understanding of what 'scripture' is to answer some questions about it's authority. My heart and mind have been prompted recently to look carefully at the 'scripture' as referred to in the Biblical contexts. My findings (a 'lay' person) are that SCRIPTURE refers to the teaching of God under the old law... Jesus, as well as the NT authors, constantly refer to those 'scriptures'....even in the most quoted text, 2 Tim 3:16,(All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness...)we find reference to the old law (vs 15). Yes, I believe that the NT books were written under the inspiration of God, but that they show us how to "live" lives obedient to and blessed through the power of the scriptures, but under a new expression of God's authority: grace. As a little girl I remember wondering, "Who gets to make up all these rules?" For instance, my tender heart as a little girl noticed that I was to not cut my hair or go to worship without some covering on my head (I Cor. 1:3-6). But it was explained to me that in the culture during which that rule was observed the uncovered head was a practice of prostitutes of the day. I believe there are many implications for examining other teachings. Look at the NT teaching to take care of the widows and orphans...in the days of the NT writings, widows were women with few rights and required the protection of the male members of their family for their survival. Organizing the deacons to see to their needs was a way to exercise the scriptural teachings about love. As a widowed person, I know in our culture that we are generally provided for by our mates at their death, and that those provisions are protected by the law of civil government...today, the teaching, if recorded, might be to take care of the homeless. So, for me I have answered the questions about 'who gets to make up the rules.' No more rules are needed, but the Biblical examples of how the first century Christians applied "scripture" in their daily lives is ispiration or at least example for us to apply to our culture's needs. I believe the teachings of the apostles were inspired and represent the best solutions found, through spiritual guidance, to apply the true "SCRIPTURES" of God, spoken by God, to His People throughout history. I do not believe that the term 'scripture' is used in any way but to refer back to the original teaching of God to his people. We can interpret those teachings for our culture and our communities with a pure heart focused on God's original teachings. | ||||||
