2 | How old is the earth scripturally? | Gen 1:1 | JonnyRay49423 | 4328
The earth is six to seven thousand old. The Bible does not give the idea the earth is billions or millions of years old. Genesis chapters 1 and 2 clearly teach God made the earth and man in six days and rested on the seventh day. |

4 | Must all the Bible be taken literally? | Bible general Archive 1 | JonnyRay49423 | 4158
When reading the Old Testament we must realize the the people of God-the Jews were given laws to govern them as a nation-we find these laws in the first five books of the OT. These laws-statutes-ordinances or commandments were to rule the people of God till the Messiah would come to usher in the Kingdom of God. The nation of Israel or God's dealing only with the Jewish nation came to end when they rejected the Messiah-then God commanded the Gospel of be preached to all the world-read Romans 14:8-12;Acts 28:20ff; Hebrews 10). When we read the New Testament we find in the Pauline Epistles laws that govern the new people of God-the New Covenant People-the Church-the New Testament is not to go by the OT Torah that governed the nation of Israel. We are for example not to follow OT dietary laws or sacrifical laws. We are to follow the teachings of the New Moses the Lord Jesus-for example the laws found in the Sermon of the Mount Matthew chapters 5 through 7. I recommend you do a indepth study of the Epistle to the Hebrews to get further insight why we are not to live like Old Testament Jews but New Covenant saints. |

8 | 1Corinthians questions: Gifts and women | 1 Corinthians | JonnyRay49423 | 3984
It is impossible to examine all the Scriptures you quoted in your theology of tongues. We both know that there are books by scholars on both sides of the issue-I have books in my library by those who hold to speaking in tongues-they can quote the Scriptures to defend their position-I also have books by those who find no biblical support for speaking in tongues. Maybe we should shift the focus-Ask the question of why the Holy Spirit has given spiritual gifts to us-Christians? Maybe what we should be doing is using our spiritual gifts to help other believers in their walk with God. Not think one spiritual gift is better than another-now I do see the gift of proclaiming the teachings of the Bible to be the best gift-but we need all the gifts of the Spirit-I personally see tongues to be not important-but that is my personal conviction-I know there are Christians who disagree with me-in the end we need to love another and serve the Lord-make sure the Lord is the focus and not ourselves. |

9 | 1Corinthians questions: Gifts and women | 1 Corinthians | JonnyRay49423 | 3983
I wrote that sentence in a form of a question "If one was to preach from Genesis to Revelation would he find "tongues" to be super important or the Lord Jesus Christ?" The answer would be not tongues but the Lord Jesus Christ. It is also true one would not find the length of hair of women to be a major doctrine-but the role of women is important in the Scriptures-it all goes back to creation account in Genesis-Eve was not given dominion over Adam-male headship goes back to creation-I see this teaching to be throughout the Bible-so the status of women in the created order/Church is important-more important than tongues or the length of ones hair. When it comes to the length of hair-male or female-one must follow Christian liberty-not fall into legalism-or false ideas of Christian spirituality.

The major book that helped me is titled "A Theology of the Holy Spirit:The Pentecostal Experience and the New Testament Witness" by Frederick Dale Bruner-I also recommend these books on the Holy Spirit-John Owen The Holy Spirit two volumes (a Puritan work)-Abraham Kuyper "The Work of The Holy Spirit"-C.R. Vaughan "The Gifts Of The Holy Spirit"-George Smeaton "The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit"-"The Office And Work Of The Holy Spirit" by James Buchanan. I have studied for years Pentecostalism/Theology-feel free to ask me questions-maybe e-mail me privately-would love the Christian fellowship-before I close check out B.B. Warfield's two volumes titled Perfectionism. |

11 | OT church? | Acts 2:17 | JonnyRay49423 | 3981
The church is both visible and invisible. The Visible Church is made up all the elect from the beginning of the church in Genesis to the final gathering the elect described in Revelation. There is one church-one people of God made up of Jew and Gentitle (Ephesians 2:14-22). The Invisible Church is the church in heaven-the glorified saints. The Church is not the mystery revealed to the apostle Paul. The mystery is how God would bring together in one body Jew and Gentile through the death cross work of the Messiah. If we hold that there is a Jewish church and a Gentile church we bring confusion into the work of God. There is One Plan of God not one plan for Jews and one plan for non-Jews. |

I confess I did not quote any verses to back of what I wrote concerning your questions. I gave you my opinion for what it is worth. Now how to defend my opinions with verses from the Bible. I do not have any new verses to use to back up my opinions. In this StudyBible Forum I see the same questions being asked all the time especially the women issue and tongues. I have nothing else to add to the debate except my opinion-the Bible verses setting forth what the Bible teaches about the role of women in the local church have been quoted several times in the StudyBible Forum. When it comes to the phenomenon of what is described by Pentecostals as speaking in tongues I can only offer my opinions. Among Christians we have Pentecostals and non-Pentecostals. I personally see no value spiritually in speaking in gibberish. I can not explain to you how I came to speak in tongues if I now believe it to be unbiblical. I have some biblically based arguements but I can not fulfill that task in this small white box-I could recommend some books that helped me-but in the end we must go by the plain teachings of the Bible. The last week I have been doing a study of First Corinthians-I am only on chapter 3-but I do see that the apostle Paul's main desire was to preach Christ crucified and not anything else-my opinion is that as Christians we will only mature spiritually under the preaching of the Bible-textual preaching-if one was to preach from Genesis to Revelations would one find "tongues" to be super important or the Lord Jesus Christ? The focus of Scripture is the Lord-we must get our eyes off ourselves and focus them on the Lord Jesus Christ.
13 | How can we influence who is saved? | 1 Pet 2:9 | JonnyRay49423 | 3579
It is true God has elected some to salvation and left others to perish in their sin-but we not forget that God uses the preaching of the Gospel to elect sinners unto Himself-we must hold together divine sovereignty and human responsiblity. We must freely offer salvation to all mankind sinners.
14 | SECOND CHANCE | Rev 7:1 | JonnyRay49423 | 2368
I see the act of repentance has a given to the sinner by God. A sinner can not just repent when he feels like it. I would think some mankind sinners might fall into the error thinking they can live like they want now and later on I will repent when I feel like it. There is never a last minute for a sinner to repent. When a sinner hears the gospel call to repent and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ he is to obey the call not wait another day (the Tribulation Period). We have no certainty that the God will continue to be merciful-the day of grace may end and the sinner left to die in his sins.
