401 | Things Jesus Never Taught | Matt 28:20 | kalos | 173562
Things Jesus Never Taught [The items listed below are not necessarily sinful or bad. My only point here is that Jesus himself never specifically taught any of the following.] Jesus never taught: 1. Taking communion the first Sunday of every month 2. Committees 3. Passing an offering plate or basket in church 4. Altar calls 5. Lengthy pleas for offerings 6. Holding Sunday services at 10:00 or 10:30 a.m. 7. Signing cards pledging tithes or missionary support 8. Singing three hymns in every Sunday morning service 9. Singing off-the-wall choruses from an overhead projector in church 10. Wearing neckties to church on Sunday morning 11. Holding annual Sunday school picnics 12. Ending every prayer by SAYING "In Jesus Name..." 13. Baptismal fonts inside the church building 14. Church buildings 15. The notion that mankind would have to wait until one 17th century English version appeared before we would ever have the only "inspired" text of the Bible 16. A democratic system of church government in which every member gets to vote 17. Following Roberts' Rules of Orders in church business meetings 18. Church basements or fellowship halls with kitchens 19. Printed programs for church services 20. Salaried church organists, pianists and choir directors Note that I am not necessarily opposed to these things. I am merely asking, Where in the Gospels does Jesus teach such things? Fundamentalists often criticize liturgical or formal churches because of their many traditions. (I am not speaking here of traditions of doctrine, but of traditions of practice within the church.) Yet do not fundamentalist churches hold to certain "traditions" of their own? |

403 | Faith in Self or Faith in God? | Rom 9:16 | kalos | 173494
"Not a question of human will..." So then [God's gift] is not a question of human will and human effort, but of God's mercy. [It depends not on one's own willingness nor on his strenuous exertion as in running a race, but on God's having mercy on him.] Romans 9:16 AMPLIFIED Listen to the Bible is good advice. |

404 | Faith in Self or Faith in God? | Rom 9:16 | kalos | 173493
NOR OF HUMAN DECISION...but born of God Someone may believe: "Regeneration is a matter of exercising the will. In other words, it is initiated by a man making a decision." But God says: "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God -- children born not of natural descent, NOR OF HUMAN DECISION or a husband's will, but born of God." John 1:12-13 New International Version (NIV) (Emphasis added.) Nor of human decision...but born of God. 'The divine side of salvation: ultimately it is not a man's will that produces salvation but God's will.' (John MacArthur, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997) |

406 | James instead of Jacob -- WHY? | James 1:1 | kalos | 173482
Searcher: Thank you for an excellent, well-researched, factual answer to my question. I will pass the information along to others, those who insist that the custom of the translators using the name James in the NT text started with the KJV of 1611. Grace to you, Kalos |

407 | James instead of Jacob -- WHY? | James 1:1 | kalos | 173470
James or Jacob? Some Messianic believers have been taught that in the New Testament of the KJV the name James is a deliberately perverted translation of the Greek word that should be translated Jacob. That the Greek word translated James is Iakobos (pronounced ee-ak'-o-bos, Strong's #2385) is a fact and is not being disputed here. My question has to do with WHY it was translated James instead of Jacob in the KJV. Messianic believers are being taught that King James ordered it so translated because of vanity, i.e., so that a book of the Bible would have his name, James. My question is this: can anyone prove or disprove the idea that the book of James was named after or by the order of King James. I.e., that had it not been for the influence or command of King James of England, the name of the book and its human author would have been translated Jacob (as it appears in the Greek manuscripts)? Can anyone cite/quote any reference to prove or disprove the above claim? Any reliable information anyone has to share will be greatly appreciated, but, please, don't just give an answer without including the reason (proof, evidence) for your answer. Grace to you, Kalos |

409 | What is special about the 144,000? | Rev 7:4 | kalos | 173441
Where in Revelation 7, Revelation 14, or anywhere else in the Bible does it SAY the 144,000 are "preachers of the Christian gospel"? Please give us the book, chapter and verse where it SAYS this in the Bible. 'A common assumption of pretribulationists is that there will be 144,000 Jewish evangelists traversing the world in the 70th Week of Daniel. In the New Testament, there are only two places where this group is mentioned: Revelation 7 and 14. ...If we adhere to the principles of hermeneutics where we should take Scripture at face-value and in context, there is no indication that there is a revival during the 70th Week of Daniel nor are the144,000 bringing thousands to Christ during the 70th Week of Daniel.' ____________________ www.solagroup.org/articles/ endtimes/et_0007.html |

410 | What is special about the 144,000? | Rev 7:4 | kalos | 173437
Where in the book of Revelation does it say anything about the 144,00 being 'sealed for the specific purpose of being “evangelists” during the Tribulation period'? It says no such thing. In the King James Version of the Bible not once is there any mention of the word evangelist(s) in the book of Revelation.

412 | should we confess to a priest or not? | Bible general Archive 3 | kalos | 173424
As I understand it, Got Questions is NOT saying we should confess to a priest based on Matthew 16 or 18. What Got Questions is doing is explaining that the Roman CATHOLIC CHURCH bases THEIR practice of confession on THEIR interpretation of Matthew 18. Therefore, I have no problem with what Got Questions is saying.
413 | How old is the earth scripturally? | Gen 1:1 | kalos | 173290
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2 Peter 3:8 (ESV) To God a day is *AS* a thousand years; but a day *IS* evening and morning -- 24 hours. A day is the time of light between one night and the next; the period of rotation of a planet (as earth) or a moon on its axis; the mean solar day of 24 hours beginning at mean midnight. Psalm 90:4 (ESV) For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. Genesis 1:5 (ESV) God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. The concept of one day as a thousand years has been misused to justify all kinds of questionable teaching regarding creation, prophecy, and other subjects in which time is a factor. "The apostle Peter says in 2 Pet. 3:8; that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. But Peter was simply saying that what man regards as a long time is like a mere day in God's reckoning of time. He was speaking in the terms of relative perspectives. It's equivalent to saying: To a very rich man a thousand dollars is like one dollar, whereas, one dollar is like a thousand to a very poor man." (www.biblicist.org/bible/light.shtml) |

414 | How old is the earth scripturally? | Gen 1:1 | kalos | 173289
'A Thousand To One 'Some have tried to argue the nonliteral interpretation of the word "day" in Genesis one by referring to what the apostle Peter says in 2Pet. 3:8; that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. But Peter was simply saying that what man regards as a long time is like a mere day in God's reckoning of time. He was speaking in the terms of relative perspectives. It's equivalent to saying: To a very rich man a thousand dollars is like one dollar, whereas, one dollar is like a thousand to a very poor man.' ____________________ Source: www.biblicist.org/bible/light.shtml |

415 | The Law of Moses has been abrogated | Matt 5:17 | kalos | 173175
'Finally, three times in 2 Corinthians 3:6-13 Paul declares that the Mosaic system is done away or abolished (vss. 7, 11, 13). In commenting on 2 Corinthians 3:7-13, Chafer wrote: 'It is the law as crystallized in the ten commandments which is in view; for that law alone was ‘written and engraven in stones.’ In the midst of the strongest possible contrast between the reign of the teachings of the law and the teachings of grace, it is declared that these commandments were ‘done away’ and ‘abolished.’ It should be recognized that the old was abolished to make place for the new, which far excels in glory. The passing of the law is not, therefore, a loss; it is rather an inestimable gain.”' __________ 'The Mosaic Law was an indivisible unit, and is that which was terminated by the Lord Jesus. Though the Law is usually divided into three parts, as described above, it is important to see that it was an indivisible unit. Thus, when Paul stated that we are not under the Law, this included all three parts, including the Ten Commandments. Some will agree that parts of the Old Testament Law have been done away, but assert the Ten Commandments are supposedly still in force today. But all three parts of the Law were designed to function as a unit to guide Israel in all of its life. The Ten Commandments cannot be separated from the rest. Further, even though most recognize this three-fold division, the Jews so numbered all the commands that they approached the Law as a unit.' __________ 'It needs to be emphasized that the end of the Mosaic law, including the Ten Commandments, does not cancel or detract one iota from the eternal moral law of God. The moral principles of the ten laws did not begin with Sinai but are as eternal and immutable as the character of God. To understand this should dispel the fears of those who think the abolition of the Mosaic law leaves only a state of lawlessness.' ____________________ To read more go to: www.bible.org At the homepage of that website, under Search Site enter: function and purpose This will take you to a link to the article, The Mosaic Law: Its Function and Purpose in the New Testament By: J. 417 | Can we be baptized with the Holy Ghost? | Matt 3:11 | kalos | 173157
Nancy: Being filled with the Spirit is an essential part of walking in Christ. Yet where does Scripture actually call this the "full gospel"? Scripture, as I've pointed out, defines the gospel as the death, burial and resurrection of Christ according to the Scriptures. Let us not add to nor take away from the words of this Book. I'm not denying the reality of the Spirit in the believer's life. I am merely stressing that we need to use biblical language to express biblical truth. The very WORDS of Scripture are inspired. Every word is important. I believe that all nine gifts of the Spirit, including tongues, are still in operation today and that none have ceased. "Be filled with the Spirit" is a command that is still binding today. To read what I've posted about the Holy Spirit, using Advanced Search, search for the words "Holy Spirit" submitted by User "Kalos". Grace to you, Kalos |

419 | Can we be baptized with the Holy Ghost? | Matt 3:11 | kalos | 173152
What is the "full gospel"? One hears a lot of talk about the "full gospel". The implication is that some may have a partial gospel while others may have a half gospel, but only an elite few are blessed with knowing the "full gospel." But the Word of God alone defines the full gospel. It is defined in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. "Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." 1 Cor 15:1-4 (NASB) There you have it. The Gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, according to the scriptures. This is the full gospel. Grace to you, Kalos |

Lionheart: I thought perhaps you would be interested in the following quote. Grace to you, Kalos Source: http://archive.christianwomentoday.com/ spiritfilledlife.html 'Do not depend upon feelings. The promise of God's Word, not our feelings, is our authority. The Christian lives by faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of God Himself and His Word. This train diagram [see the website listed below] illustrates the relationship between fact (God and His Word), faith (our trust in God and His Word), and feeling (the result of our faith and obedience) (John 14:21).' [In the train diagram, Fact is the engine that pulls the train. Faith is the car directly behind Fact (the engine). At the very end of the train is the caboose, which is Feeling.] 'The train will run with or without the caboose [Feeling]. However, it would be futile to attempt to pull the train by the caboose. In the same way, we, as Christians, do not depend upon feelings or emotions, but we place our faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of God and the promises of His Word.' ____________________ Source: Have You Made the Wonderful Discovery of the Spirit-Filled Life? http://archive.christianwomentoday.com/ spiritfilledlife.html |
