162 | Yes, but Is Easter of pagan origin? | NT general Archive 1 | jlhetrick | 198291
Catisq- Welcome to the forum! A couple of points to start with. You may not be aware that you responded to a post made nearly seven years ago! Not breaking any forum rules in that of course, but there is a good chance that the person you posted to will never see your response, much less respond back to you. In this case, poster "Alive" was only actively posting for a grand total of 22 days with a total of 5 posts. You can check the date of posts in the thread, last column. You can verify the activity of any member by left clicking on their user name in the thread. There you will find the date of the last post along with other information. Also, if you get the time and don't mind, some information about yourself can be included in your User Profile. You can access and edit that feature under "Resources" in the left column of your screen (it's not required). Finally- don't be too concerned with the struggle you may be having regarding recognizing and/or celebrating "holidays". That's not required either. Let me say though, that having a better understanding of how we as Christians should think on these things should have more to do with how we approach it than the historical relevance of what other cultures and religions might have in common with it. For example- you mention "Easter" as being a celebration of the death of Jesus. I personally do refer to the holiday as Easter but what I and my family celebrate is not the death of Jesus, but His resurrection. Lots of men die, but Jesus rose again. That's worthy of celebration in my opinion. We really start to confuse the issue, and ourselves, if we attempt to align the day we celebrate the event with the exact day of the event. After all, we are not celebrating the day, but the event. For Christians, Easter is simply a day set aside to "represent" the single event of Christ's resurrection from the dead. The truth of the evenet should be celebrated each and every day by Christians. I agree with you that we should not judge others based on whether they do or do not celebrate a holiday, religious or otherwise. God Bless, Jeff |

164 | who told eve to tell the serpent , | Genesis | jlhetrick | 167434
Hello Mark, Your right of course. My mistake. I should have been more specific to say that the bible doesn't tell us. This is one of those areas where we have to use some discernment. When I read and consider the story I have to take what is given in scripture and draw some fair conclusions. Drawn from 1). The clear instructions from God. 2). Eve's response to Satan; which includes instructions that weren't given by God. So, to be more specific. Someone expanded and/or misinterpreted God's specific word. Whether Adam or Eve we can't know. What we do know, however, is we do have record of Eve stating it wrongly. Thanks for encouraging me to clarify my thoughts. Jeff |

165 | "sons of God saw daughters of men?" | Genesis | jlhetrick | 203312
Quvmoh- welcome to the forum brother or sister (couldn't tell from your profile so no offense). In following this thread I didn't see where brother Tim Moran mentioned this (nor did any other unless I have missed it). While I consider brother Tim a teacher to me I don't intend to speak for him. With that said, it may be a clearer position in warning against a dogmantic view of either of the considered "possibilities" to include that both views (angels vs. saved humans) are widely held by Christian people to include theologians with greater study and understanding than many of us here. By the way, you did a fine job of searching the Scriptures and digging for the information and a good job in your presenting it here. Finally, I refer to brother Tim as one I consdier a teacher because I have learned enough about him here to know that he not only has searched and studied God's word and proven himself one who accurately handles the word in keeping with 2 Timothy 2:15. I also know him as one who has explored and studied what other, more learned men have said and written about much of the bible. This issue is what many refer to as a "non-essential". That is, it's not essential for salvation and so the debate can only be taken so far safely without possibly causing devisiveness. Hope my input is a bit helpful and again welcome to the forum. God bless, Jeff |

Thank you for the response Quvmoh- I wasn't overly concerned about your coming across as offensive to Tim just wanted to add some thought on the discussion. Also, I don't want to come across as offensive to you, nor do I want to "play" on your words but I'm a bit concerned about how I am interpreting your position and would like to call attention to it. In one post you stated you were: "merely using the passages you quoted to better strengthen my own claims." Again, please don't feel that I am nit-picking and/or playing on your words because that is not at all my intent. My intent is to call attention to what might be some degree of wrong approach to doctrine, more specifically, how one's doctrine should be established. My biggest concern is with your statement that you were "merely using the passages you quoted to better strengthen my own claims." If I am understanding you I should advise that this does not seem an appropriate approach to establishing bible doctrine. Scripture should never be USED to support OUR CLAIMS (caps not used for yelling but emphasis). Rather, we should only claim what Scripture undeniably declares. So herin may lie the problem with these recent exchanges. If we "claim" a position on any issue and then set out to support that position with Scripture we are most likely to ignor or denie other positions that might have just as much or more support from Scripture. In the end, we end up believing something that may in fact not be true. That is why it is important, as Tim Moran pointed out, that we don't make any claims at all that we can not absolutely find declared by God Himself in His Word. In your recent post (the one I am responding to) you wrote that you are "convicted to ensure that Context is not taken lightly and that my own claims are within context and well founded". That statement might suggest that my interpretation of your approach to doctrine may be wrong but I did want to clarify. So with the issue at hand, considering the opposing views, I believe that we are left with the fact that either side can be argued with Scripture but neither is necessarily "well founded". In other words, we just don't know. Thanks for your time and God bless, Jeff |

"women overruled and guided the progression of the birthright and blessing from God." Really? I thought God did that.

I Believe that Genesis 25 might best be understood in the context of Romans 8:28. When Rebekah coached Jacob through their sin of deceit and robbery God still had full control over every single event. He didn't cause Rebekah to sin but He, having foreknowledge of it, allowed the sin and His plan was not thwarted. Does this help?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 (NASB)
171 | Creation days | Genesis | jlhetrick | 238950
Hi Jalek - one of the most important reasons to "read it carefully" is to ensure we don't read something into it that isn't there. It's also important that we don't assume that The Creator God is limited in ways that our logic might suggest He should be. In other words, we shouldn't assume (especially in the clear context given in the opening verses of Scripture) that God was required to put one before the other. This is why I didn't offer my own creative explanation of the first verse in Scripture. It, Scripture, speaks for itself. Still, we are given a logic to think and problem solve and even to help us understand and interpret Scripture. We are "thinking" creatures. With that said, I would argue the logical point that if something comes first (verse 1) we shouldn't attempt to put verse 5 ahead of it. If we are reading carefully we can't possibly point to verse 5 to support your point can we? Reading carefully would require that we also read the verses between 1 and 5, particularly verse 3. Verse 3 says "Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light." . Notice the adverb "then". Then in verse 4 it says "God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.". Finally, we get to verse 5 where it says that God called the light day and the darkness night declaring "one day". Without reading into the text myself or trying to say something is there that isn't there my best attempt to understand the text, as it is written, is that God created the heavens and the earth (verse 1) AFTER that He called light onto the formless void and still after that he separated that light from the darkness at which "time" (no pun intended) TIME as the earth and it's creatures would know it began. |

I understand Jalek - I would encourage you to not be distracted by that question that you still cannot answer as there are so many truths of scripture that, once answered for us, are truly edifying. The rabbit trails can appear interesting and inviting but in the end really only circle back having gone nowhere.
173 | why are the Jews God's chosen people? | Genesis | jlhetrick | 239632
Great answer and response Doc. The question being "why are the Jews God's chosen people" is a great question to consider. We are fortunate that God Himself told us so plainly in the text you quoted from Deuteronomy leaving no doubt that it was in fact God’s sovereign choice having no dependency on the people or any single person. Your reference to Romans 3: 10-19 is well aligned with that of Ephesians 2:8-9 as well as Romans 12:3 and |

174 | How Can be a satan in heaven? | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 172128
Hello Jamie, I hope you have read the forum rules. This is a Christian forum intended for Christian bible study. You plagiarized: "After Satan and those who fell with him were shut out of heaven, and he realized that he had forever lost all its purity and glory, he repented, and wished to be reinstated in heaven. He was willing to take his proper place, or any position that might be assigned him. But no; heaven must not be placed in jeopardy. All heaven might be marred should he be taken back; for sin originated with him, and the seeds of rebellion were within him. Both he and his followers wept, and implored to be taken back into the favor of God. But their sin--their hatred, their envy and jealousy--had been so great that God could not blot it out. It must remain to receive its final punishment." I will not post the site from which you copied and pasted this as not to promote such a thing. No where in the bible is there any such rediculous teaching. Be advised, no false teaching will be tolerated on this forum. Not by the forum members, and certainly not by the Lockman Foundation. First warning, Jeff |

180 | What is the history behind the Holy Trin | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 172637
Hello got_truth, Are you sure your screen name should not be GET_truth. I would like to offer some advice that may be helpful in doing just that for you. Establish your doctrines and beliefs based on what scripture teaches. When you depend on Secular encyclopedias how could you expect to get truth. Honestly, sir/ma'm, this is one of the most rediculous posts I have seen on this or any other CHRISTIAN forum. Quoting a bunch of secular publications and then declaring the truth of Scripture invalid? ???? ?????? I'm afraid that you do not appear yet able to say "got_milk". 1 Corinthians 3:2 (NASB95) 3:2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able,.... Hebrews 5:12-14 (NASB95) 5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Please heed 2 Timothy 2:15. Sincerely, Jeff |
