"In fact it states that a christian's conscience may be bound to Scripture alone." Dear John...I have great respect for the wisdom of this statement. Because when believers 'commit' to a church body and it's doctrines, and obey because they have committed and not because they agree, who are they serving? This statement allows them them liberty to seek truth and grow, rather than box them in. And we should all be steadily growing.... God bless |

I guess the difference is whether you think the differences of beliefs or differences of interpretation is the point of division and disunity or whether our attitude TOWARD a differing brother or sister is the point of disunity. I believe the love of God can keep us unified in spirit with differing brothers and sisters and keeps us humble and teachable. I believe unity can be maintained even when there are differences if our foundational doctrines are the same. And that foundation should be Jesus Christ (God come to earth in the form of man to suffer the penalty of death-sinless sacrifice- for all mankind so that through repentance and acceptance of Him we will be saved.)This is the truth that births us into the kingdom of God by the Holy Spirit. Unity in the rest must come through study, prayer, and development. None of us are at the same level and therefore none of us will ever agree on every detail,(until we stand face to face with Jesus and have our spiritual eyes totally opened) but if we seek to keep Godly love connecting us there will be communication and opportunity for growth. 424 | How I do to stop sinning? | Bible general Archive 1 | gracefull | 81574
Talib... The work Christ finished was death for all sin. If this were not true then as soon after we are born again we sin, we lose our salvation, if His blood only covered sin done before repentence and the new birth. Active sin remains a problem in our life when we toy with it, romance it, believe we are weak and inferior and it has power/authority/control over us. Scripture tells us 2 Peter 2-4 2.Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3.According as his divine power HATH GIVEN UNTO US ALL THINGS THAT PERTAIN TO LIFE AND GODLINESS, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4.Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Time spent with the Lord in prayer and meditation of the scriptures opens the door for the Holy Spirit to reveal the way out of temptations and testings. "I reckon myself dead to sin. Even after I reckon myself I still do active sin! Then I must recognise the sin I have done and repent of it? Hmmm. But that doesn't help me to be free of sin! I still continue to sin." Also: "What do I do to stop sinning?" As I stated first, this is a process of learning to recognize sin before we sin and choosing NOT to do it and NOT doing it through faith that the provision of strength to not sin has already been provided. However, as children we are steady learning. For new believers this may be a minute by minute task because some daily habits were sin based. Over the years the habitual should be mastered. and our mind is trained through use of the Word to recognize sin trip ups because our heart is becoming sensitive to God's heart and mind. We learn to work at staying in a prayerful state and to recognize the constant presence of the Holy Spirit to guide us, and should we sin He convicts quickly and we should repent quickly, and move on. The less we struggle to hold on to sin, the less hold it has on us. I heard a pastor say one time that when the mountain becomes bigger than God, the mountain will remain, but when our relationship is developed to the point that we recognize the truth that God is bigger than the mountain, the mountain will go. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Will there be a time in our carnal existence when we will be perfect through your own sinlessness? Not likely... But as we mature in our relationship and in the Word, sin should be the exception and not the rule. Through the sacrifice of Jesus, the Holy Spirit has been provided to guide/mentor us into less and less active sin. The problem is that some Christians believe sin still has power/authority over them. Not so.. Does that help? God bless |

Are we purhaps looking for carnal unity? In the marriage unity sometimes has to be achieved by submission of the wife, and not necessarily agreement. If a husband and wife can't come to perfect agreement, how could we expect millions and millions of believers? I believe we must focus on the fact that we are one in the Spirit unified by the Holy spirit into one body despite our differences as long as Jesus is the foundation of our faith. Purhaps we should stop viewing various denominataios as 'different' and view them rather as brethren in One Body with some differing views. When we see Jesus instead of looking through a glass darkly, we will all see all things clearly. I do agree that there is only ONE Truth and that God's Word is not open for various interpretations. And we should be able to reason together, but until the Holy Spirit CHANGES someone's understanding, they are not likely to change. Beliefs do not change with intelectual knowledge. Beliefs must be changed by the Holy Spirit. That is how I view this matter, God bless |

Romans 6 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. ceasing from active sin is a process. First one must recognize sin...Then repent of the sin. The above scriptures tell us we are dead to sin which means that it has no power to control us because through faith in Jesus Christ's finished work we have been set free from the controling power of sin. BUT...we must walk in or live our lives acknowledging that liberty. Reckon yourself dead to sin..reckon sin powerless in your life by faith in Jesus finished work. God bless |

428 | Is speaking in tongues for today? | Bible general Archive 1 | gracefull | 81085
"That is an interesting rendition of 1 Cor. 14:15:-" I believe that was what I said...Paul prays with the Spirit (in tongues) and with the understanding. However the Amplified does state it better than I did. "Paul is distinctly in favour of the use of the intellect in prayer." There is no doubt that Paul is teaching on the need to pray with the understanding but I would not use the words 'distinctly in favor of'. I rather view his as saying don't overemphasize tongues, because praying with the understanding is very important, as well. I base that on the fact that in context he is teaching that the Corinthians are leaning too heavily toward the charismatic and need to recognize that the gifts do not necessarily produce spiritual maturity. The point I was making was that there is such a thing as 'praying in tongues' as opposed to the 'gift of tongues' spoken in the public assembly. God bless |

1 Corinthians 14:14 "What is it then? I will pray with the Spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the Spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also." Praying in the Spirit is praying in tongues. The reason I see this as praying in tongues is the qay it is written. Paul distinguishes between 'with the Spirit' and 'with the understanding as two seperate things. God bless |

We receive Jesus justification by faith...our own is useless. We receive Jesus righteousness by fatih...our own is as filthy rags... "I believe that a person can get in a barrel and survive going over Niagra Falls" ... then we should be willing to get into the barrel. I hope this is of some." Excellent point..We do what we believe in our hearts. When we believe, we don't linger in indecision...which is the difference in mental assent to truth and actually believing it-thus acting upon it. Thanks, your post was a blessing to me today! God bless |

431 | 2 Corinthians- What is 'suffering' | 2 Cor 1:5 | gracefull | 81017
"You mentioned that “Jesus could do no great works there because of unbelief.” Interesting, (that word “there”) because "there" doesn’t “necessarily” include anywhere except “there” wherever “there” happened to be." "This is off the subject of healing sickness and desease but it does speak to 'unbelief'. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." Was this unbelief hindering God's work? Remember, Jesus had 'given them authority'. That is an interesting view point. Are you saying unbelief 'there' was somehow different form 'unbelief today? Their unbelief was unique? My friend...unbelief is unbelief and has the same effect regardless of the geographic location. Concerning the power of unbelief.... "And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. "How many times did Jesus walk by the man who was healed by Peter in Acts 3? That man had been placed there daily for years. And how come Peter didn’t heal him the day, week, or month before? It says they went there everyday to pray. And it says the man was laid there every day." What did Peter say of this miracle? "And on the basis of faith (25) in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all." Faith in the Name of Jesus made this man whole. As for Jesus passing many times, this is not stated in scripture..but if Jesus did pass many times, do you think Jesus was 'lacking in faith' that would have healed? Since he was healed by faith in Jesus then faith had to be lacking previously and it had to either be Peter's faith or the lame man's faith...Either way, it was 'by faith'. "There are soooooooooooo many other examples that cancel the doctrine of “perfect health” for all. Jesus even said in effect, "Doctors are for the sick." If sickness is NOT of God. Neither are doctors." God created doctors to correct the deseases He puts on us? No, if He wants us sick why would we go to doctors to get better. If He wants to teach us through sickness...we need to cease in our efforts to get well. Stop trying to resist God's will. This thread was created to discuss 2 Corinthians and it's use in the doctrine of sickness being the 'suffering with Christ' Paul was speaking of. Do you have any further observations on this particular study? I do not believe we should use these scriptures to promote a doctrine they in no wise state, regardless of your belief concerning God's will concerning sickness and desease. God bless |

Who GAVE Moses’ sister and brother leprosy? Read Deuteronomy 28:15-68 to learn what the God, who changes not, "promises" to do to and with His people. If you believe scripture confirms your belief... fine...if you accept it because it is what you have been taught or because you have not 'seen proof' these are the wrong reasons. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Jesus COULD DO NO GREAT WORKS THERE BECAUSE OF THEIR UNBELIEF.... What do you think of that? Moses sister received leprosy for murmoring and inciting the people against Moses, God's chosen spokes person... God bless |

436 | 2 Corinthians- What is 'suffering' | 2 Cor 1:5 | gracefull | 80907
And we know that [3] God causes (59) all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are (60) called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He (61) foreknew, He also (62) predestined to become (63) conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the (64) firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He (65) predestined, He also (66) called; and these whom He called, He also (67) justified; and these whom He justified, He also (68) glorified. 31 (69) What then shall we say to these things? (70) If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who (71) did not spare His own Son, but (72) delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against (73) God's elect? (74) God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who (75) condemns? Christ Jesus is He who (76) died, yes, rather who was [4] (77) raised, who is (78) at the right hand of God, who also (79) intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from (80) the love of [5] Christ? Will (81) tribulation, or distress, or (82) persecution, or (83) famine, or (84) nakedness, or (85) peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, "(86) FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED." 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly (87) conquer through (88) Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither (89) death, nor life, nor (90) angels, nor principalities, nor (91) things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from (92) the love of God, which is (93) in Christ Jesus our Lord. You said,"It is a pernicious doctrine because it denies the sovereignty of God in allowing disease to exist for His glory." (Romans 8:28) For those whom He (61) foreknew, He also (62) predestined to become (63) conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the (64) firstborn among many brethren; Predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ... LET ME MAKE ONE THING PERFECTLY CLEAR..(emphasis-not emotion nor shouting) The sovereign will of God is His Word. His sovereign will does not supersede His covenant, which is His Word. Do you agree? If so....... I am in no way saying God is not sovereign. The difference in belief here is not God's sovereignty but rather His will as defined in His covenant! I believe healing is provided through the atonement as stated in Isaiah 53 for all who receive by faith, just as salvation is received by faith in Jesus. You call it heresy because it disagrees with 'traditional orthodox teaching'. If scripture disagrees with traditional orthodox teaching-so be it. "Did God really allow such an important, "MAJOR" element of His gospel to be absent from the church for century upon century until we "enlightened" couch-potato Christians suddenly figured it out?" Religious leaders and then the dark ages of hidden "Word" kept truth suppressed. This truth came back out before television. Television is an instrument for reaching many...Or do you view TV as an instrument of the devil? Or are you simply 'profiling' WOF believers as believers who do not go to church? Most go to church AND study via TV. God bless |

437 | 2 Corinthians- What is 'suffering' | 2 Cor 1:5 | gracefull | 80895
Per Matthew Henry's commentary: Healing Is Part of Jesus' Mission (8:17) "The context in Isaiah 53 suggests that the suffering servant's death would heal the nation from its sin (Is 53:4-6, 8-9; compare 1 Pet 2:22-25), a figurative expression frequent in the Prophets (Mt 13:15; Is 6:10; 57:18; Jer 3:22; 6:14; 8:11; 14:19; Hos 14:4). But the broader context of Isaiah shows God's promise for his people's complete wellness in the era of the kingdom (Is 29:18; 32:3-4; 35:5-6), suggesting secondary nuances of physical healing in 53:4-5 as well. The servant's suffering would, after all, restore to Israel all the benefits lost through sin (compare Ex 15:26; Deut 27-28). Thus Matthew cites Isaiah 53:4 to demonstrate that Jesus' mission of healing fulfills the character of the mission of the servant, who at the ultimate cost of his own life would reveal God's concern for a broken humanity. Matthew himself also recognizes that genuine physical healings can illustrate principles of spiritual healing (9:5-7, 12; 13:15). But we should note the correct caution of D. A. Carson (1984:207): "BLOCK - This text and others clearly teach that there is healing in the Atonement; but similarly there is the promise of a resurrection body in the Atonement, even if believers do not inherit it until the Parousia. From the perspectives of the NT writers, the Cross is the basis for all the benefits that accrue to believers; but this does not mean that all such benefits can be secured at the present time on demand, any more than we have the right and power to demand our resurrection bodies. Because the kingdom is present as well as future, God often heals in the present, but what he does not choose to heal now he has promised to heal in the end (Blomberg 1992:145). More practically than simply quoting a few verses that address healing, we should meditate on biblical examples of healing and what we can learn thereby about how God feels about human pain. By doing so we can develop deeper intimacy in our relationship with Jesus, trusting his compassion, which is the basis for every kind of healing he graciously performs." But the broader context of Isaiah shows God's promise for his people's complete wellness in the era of the kingdom (Is 29:18; 32:3-4; 35:5-6), suggesting secondary nuances of physical healing in 53:4-5 as well. "Complete wellness in the era of the kingdom..." As one reads on to Carlson's notes one finds that although Matthew Henry finds healing an undeniable fact of the atonement...He chooses to speculate on the meaning of 'kingdom'. "The servant's suffering would, after all, restore to Israel all the benefits lost through sin (compare Ex 15:26; Deut 27-28)." "But we should note the correct caution of D. A. Carson (1984:207):" "Because the kingdom is present as well as future, God often heals in the present, but what he does not choose to heal now he has promised to heal in the end." Where is Carson's scriptural basis for this comparison of healing to the ressurection? While I do agree that everyone does not receive healing and that when we get to heaven we will be healed, this fact in no way addresses God's will to heal here in this life, and is in fact an attempt to disallow the fact that Christ paid for healing in the atonement, by implying it was bought only for some in this life and some in the next. "You can make all the emotional appeals as you would like, accusing people of "penciling things in" and of denying that Jesus ever healed anyone." I do not know what you mean by the second half of this statement because I know some in the forum believe in healing to some extent. But the penciled in part in regard to 2 Corinthians means adding sickness and desease where Paul spoke of 'suffering'. I noticed Talib seemed to be going in the same direction. God bless |

438 | 2 Corinthians- What is 'suffering' | 2 Cor 1:5 | gracefull | 80881
Talmid..Thank you for your post. By considering your chosen text, I gather you believe we should read Isa. 53:10 as what we too should experience? 2 Corinthians 1 says we will share His sufferings (by association) but that we will also share His comfort and deliverence (by association). However, Jesus did not 'suffer' from sickness and desease...until He took ours. And suffering was not forced upon Him, He accepted it when it was time. "My time has not come" and later He said 'No man takes my life from me, I lay it down'. Isaiah 53:4-6 states that Jesus took our sicknesses and deseases through the atonement..Just like our sin...(see Mathew Henry) You will also notice when you read this commentary that although Matthew Henry acknowledges that healing is part of the atonement, he 'issues a disclaimer' which had absolutely NO scriptural references to support the disclaimer. This disclaimer , and I agree, instructs the believer to search the scriptures regarding healing. The 'suffering' of believers should be carefully searched out scripturally because I believe traditions teach that 'all bad things' are 'suffering with or for Christ'. Paul in 2 Corinthians makes NO mention of sickness and desease as part of the sufferings, so I do not believe we should add it where it is not stated. Rest...See Hebrews chapter 3 and 4 and listen carefully to 'rest'. 1.Seek to define scriptural rest. 2.Seek to determine how to achieve it. talib...tradition has 'penciled' in sickness and desease where it is does not belong. The reason I believe this is because of Isaiah 53. God chose to (by secondary nuance) add healing to the statement of Jesus atonement. God bless |
