41 | Cup Passed? | Bible general Archive 2 | flinkywood | 118136
Rowdy, I can tell you're fired up for the word, and that's way cool in my book, brother. I've learned a load from posting on this forum. It'll happen to you too, guaranteed. Attack those cross references! As my Bible teaching friend Hugh used to say: "Dig!" I'll look at your "challenges" later on, okay? Colin |

Hank, Yes, it fulfills the forum's purpose, which ideally should be to educate and mutually encourage through objective, reasoned argument founded in the verity and deity of Christ (1 Cor 3:11). From Webster's 1828 dictionary: Objective: "2) Belonging to the object; contained in the object. Objective certainty, is when the proposition is certainly true in itself; and subjective, when we are certain of the truth of it. The one is in things, the other in our minds." Argument: "1) In logic, an inference drawn from premises, which are indisputable, or at least of probable truth." "Study to show thyself approved unto God..." (2 Tim 2:15) KJV Approved: "4) To make or show to be worthy of approbation; to commend. 'Jesus, a man approved of God.' Acts 2. "This word seems to include the idea of Christ's real office as the Messiah, and of God's love and approbation of him in that character." What I hate to see on this forum is someone defending his perfect "argument" by pointing out his challenger's lack of Christian love. I wish that ugly little harpie would disappear from this place forever. "Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification." (Rom 15:2) KJV N'est pas, monsieur Hank? Colin |

Hank, it's late, I'm in a tax quagmire, seeing quadruple, and reading your post for comic relief. Your personal translation evolution is a neat, sweet treatise on the whole kit-and-kaboodle. I like that you like the NASB; I like liking it myself. I'm in it all the time. Trustworthy, you bet; I even like the warty awkwardness of it, the way it bangs resolutely down the pitch, cleats and all, clawing it's way through the Psalms, teeth clenched, snorting and groaning, kicking up the mud and grit, aching for the goalpost. It ain't no sissy translation! Man, I gotta get some shuteye Colin |

45 | Does the OT apply to us as christians? | Bible general Archive 2 | flinkywood | 118470
Rowdy, you might be confusing the OT with the cermonial laws imposed after the apostasy of the golden calf (circumscision, feast days, animal sacrifice, etc.); otherwise, I can't make sense of your assertion that the OT lacks "authority" over us as Christians. 1) Could you please explain (succinctly) what you mean by "authority"? Nearly one-half of all Paul's OT citations are in Romans, and nearly one-half of these deployed authoritatively in Romans 9-11. 2) Can you imagine Paul agreeing with you about the "authority" of the OT? 3) Have you read the OT completely, by the way? Reighnskye, If you're referring to the "paregoric" thread and the seriousness between Hank and me, let me exegize. Paregoric is a diarrhoea nostrum twisted by Hank's subtle wit into a pun on Pythagoras who, though not culpable for the narrowing of the value of pi (Archimedes), nevertheless serves Hank's purpose here which is to pun past his bedtime. Certain regulars herein can get punchy and sound like the Marx Bretheren. Colin |

Tim, here are the Jeremiah verses (abridged). For the customs of the peoples are delusion; Because it is wood cut from the forest, The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool... "Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot walk! Do not fear them, For they can do no harm, Nor can they do any good."... But they are altogether stupid and foolish In their discipline of delusion--their idol is wood!.. But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King... Thus you shall say to them, "The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens." (Jer 10:3-11) Colin |
