1 | How important is your Church? | Bible general Archive 1 | algumwood | 29050
right - ok - the church i am part of is a vital part of my life, not just sunday but every day. by choosing to make active involvement in the community of the christian faith a priority, we set in place accountability, encouragement, instruction, and corporate prayer and worship. these are integral aspects of my faith, just as the time i spend alone with God in my living room is integral.
2 | Do holy people have to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 12:30 | algumwood | 29362
1 cor. 14:1, psalm 37:4, john 16:24, james 4:2, matthew 7:9 are just some of many scriptures that make it clear we most certainly can ask for the gifts. where do you find in the Word that God would ever say it was rude to ask something of Him? He came "to bring life, and life to the full." He delights in giving us the desires of our hearts. God is delighted by a believer who is seeking Him fully, desiring more and more of Him. one way of growing in intimacy with Jesus is through the gifts. |

3 | Do holy people have to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 12:30 | algumwood | 29364
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:4 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied." Acts 19:6 There he found some disciples and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." acts 19:2 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. 1 corin. 14:5 (this also indicates that there are times for tongues without an interpreter, just not for public meetings) I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 1 corin. 14:18 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 1 corin. 14:39 now, where did you pick up the idea that it is rude to ask God for anything? what about "ask and it will be given to you...," "you have not because you ask not..," "which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, would give him a stone..." The persistent widow, etc... those are just a few of the multitude of scriptures that are clear that God WANTS us to ask of Him. true, there is nowhere in the Bible which states, "if you are filled with the Spirit you will speak in tongues." however, i think it is worth noting the recurring pattern we see of "AND" (see acts 2:4, 19:6 - there are more) tongues "usually" accompanied being filled by the spirit. also, not every believer automatically receives the Holy Spirit (acts 19:2) it is possible to be a believer and follower of Christ and not have received His Spirit. there is no clear evidence in the Bible to support that the giving and receiving of the gifts of the Spirit ceased. (and yes, like with all gifts, it must not only be "given" by God, but also "received" by the person). we must not allow our experience to shape our theology more than what is written in the Word. the Word does not adjust - we do. |

4 | your statement | 1 Cor 12:30 | algumwood | 29373
joe, i offer that scripture, in order to be beneficial, must be read in context, and in conjunction with the whole Word. it is a mark of immaturity to make a statement such as, "However, I rarely hear anyone telling others to trust God as they pick up the rattlesnake or to believe on God as they drink the bleach. It seems pretty inconsistent to me that one claims to trust God for tongues but doesn't have enough faith to juggle cobras or chug the arsenic." we know we are not to put God to the test, so yes, it would be unwise to intentionally enter into harm's way simply because we are filled by God Spirit. however, testing God by intentionally entering harm's way is hardly the same as desiring/asking for the gift of tongues (this is supported scripturally, as well as by common sense.) i have seen some pretty belittleing comments and generalizations in your posts on this topic - remember that "we are to submit ourselves to one another, as to Christ" and also the fruit of the Spirit includes gentleness. i doubt Christ ever used sarcasm as a means of leading/teaching others. |
