261 | "Be ye perfect." | Matt 5:48 | Searcher56 | 214605
God's day to you, keliy, Matthew 5:1 says There were crowds ... and He began the Sermon on the Mount. There may have been Pharisees, I doubt it based on verse 20 "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven" ... This is the 5th "You have heard ... but I say to you." Dealing with love/hate. Verse 48 should never be taken out of context, as with any other verse. God's love is perfect is because He loves His enemies. Searcher |

I believe the old men in Joel 2:28 and Acts 2:17 are Jews, since the audience in both cases were Jews. Unless you are a old man and a Jew, this promise is not for you.

God's day to you, fwiaskycap, Just because a person in the Bible experienced something means it will happen today. This includes God speaking through dreams, or a audible voice, etc. If true, it must line up with the Bible. Even though I had a dream about meeting Jesus in the air with others ... and it lines up with the Bible (1Th 4:17) ... I do not claim it was from God. Searcher |

268 | God always gets what he desires? T or F | 1 Tim 2:3 | Searcher56 | 213156
God's day to you, Norton, The word desires is in verse 4 "(God) who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." First, to rely on just English is not wise. One needs to look at the original. There are several Greek words we translate desire. Some are ... aiteo, epizeteo, epipotheo, parakaleo, zeloo. Thelo is the Greek word, which is a stronger form of haireomai (choose in English). Thelo is also translated wish and want, as well as others. 2 Peter 3:9 also shows that God "desires" no one to perish. But it doden't mean He will get His way. His determined will cannot be changed ... including the timing of Christ's birth and the other prophecies about Him ... and all He has says that will happened or has. Searcher |

270 | Can a woman divorce man: Ongoing porn? | Matthew | Searcher56 | 212639
God's day to you, Bandaid, It was rightly said that we don't counsel here. Even if we were experts, the missing element is there is no face-to-face interactions. Go to wise Christian counsel ... ask your pastor for direction. They should ask your husband to be included. I believe the reason there isn't anything about a woman (wife) divorcing her man (husband) is that wasn't her right. It may sound sexist that only a man can divorce. Even if you connect Matthew 5:27-30 (lusting with look by a man, which now can be done with porn) with 31-32, he does the divorcing. I hope I helped, Searcher |

271 | salvation for unbelievers? | Rom 1:20 | Searcher56 | 212461
God's day to you, bpetersen5, and welcome to the SBF, I like this section of Romans to see those who have never heard don't have any excuse and are bound for Hell. There are some who believe and how God handles them, as well as babies, young children and those who never acheived mental assent ... is a mystery known only to Him. It is interesting that he thinks all are bound for Hell ... and not a better place. John 3:16-17 comes to mind, as well as Acts 16:30-31, Romans 3:21-28 (v 23), Romans 6:19-23 (v 23). Look at the context of the verses. There are others. Most important let your life prove it. Say "If I am wrong, there is no big loss. I followed a great Teacher and His Word. If you are wrong, you will be lost forever". Without His (death and) ressurection all we say and our faith is in vain (1 Cor 15:14). Searcher |

God's day to you, KcabmI4, All the Bible says is "she ... laid Him in a manger". Some presume it was a stable. We don't even know if there was protection against the elements. There MAY have been many other visitors in town, so that is why there was no room for them in the inn. Searcher |

274 | Why do I want to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 13:1 | Searcher56 | 212365
God's day to you, All those who go to people who speak another language wish they had the gift of speaking in tongues. However, was it ever used in the Bible for evangelism? Even at Pentecost, I believed Peter spoke in Aramaic. I believe one thinks in their native tongue, then speaks in a tongue they have not studied. I just thought there could be a problem, when one doesn't think in the language of the hearer. When I speak Japanese, which I learned as a child, my thought pattern is different than it is in English. I believe the gift exists, but is not a gift that one MUST have to show they are saved. There are other gifts given at the Holy Spirit's will. Best wishes as you go across the sea, Searcher |

277 | Sell what you have-give alms | Bible general Archive 4 | Searcher56 | 212289
flyman ... the thread is about Sell what you have-give alms Let us look at the first two verses you cited ... the first is not about the topic. Matt 10:38 - Jesus said, "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me." The context is Jesus' instruction to the 12 before He sent them out (10:1-11:1) ... and a tighter context is making chosing Him or not (vv 34-39). Matt 19:21, - Jesus said that in order to inherit eternal life, be perfect, sell everything you have, give to the poor then follow him. ... you misquoted the last word - it is "Me" that is Jesus, not him, the poor man. The context is verses 16-30. Even if you looked at verse 22, you missed only part of your pretext. Look at verses 18-19 ... which of the last five of the Ten Commandments did Jesus leave out? The reason Jesus asked this one to sell what he had was ... is he coveted while he had much. The Pharisees had other issues which kept them out. That is why I say context ... and so do others. flyman - You take single verses to TRY to prove your point ... that is PRETEXT. Take the verses in the CONTEXT they were written, and then link them to the CONTEXT when the thought is used elsewhere. Otherwise, cease communicating. I will not waste my time pointing out your errors until then. Searcher |
