part 2 John 1 11- 14 Verse 11 Jesus came first of all to the People of God, to the Jews but most of them did not receive him as the Messiah, the Son of God but only as Jesus the son of Joseph the carpenter and Mary. Luke 4:21-22 reads “And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, "is this not Joseph”s son?"” NASB Matthew13:55-56 reads “"Is not this the carpenter”s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? "And His sisters are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"" NASB Mark 6:3 reads” "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him."NASB Verse 12 I find the wording of this verse very interesting, it reads:”But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, John 1:12 NASB To those who received Him Jesus gave the RIGHT to become children of God, salvation is not a privilege for the few but the right of all people, everyone can claim it. As many Jews who did receive him along with others who were non Jews such as the Canaanite woman, mentioned by both Matthew and Luke though not by Mark or John, see Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark and: 24 -30, were given the right to become children of God. The following link will take us to three Synoptic Gospel charts which compare each one to the Gospel of John; these will be useful later when we are studying the “signs” in John. http://www.users.bigpond.com/ajblair9/Andrew/Synoptic_Chart.htm The words “ even to those who believe on His name” at the end of verse 12 refer on to all those who have come to believe in the Name of Jesus, those of us who unlike Thomas did not touch the wounds in his body, we also have the right to become children of God. Verse 13. “Who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” NASB This verse explains that unlike Judaism where most people become Jews simply by being born into a Jewish family or of a Jewish mother, children of God or Christians cannot become so by being born into a Christian family or by having a Christian mother. Children of God are willed and desired to be so by the Father. God our Father wills everyone to claim the right of our salvation; this is not anything we can initiate; only God can do this. Verse 14 John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” NASB Now returns mention of the Word. That Word which was in the beginning with the Father was made flesh and dwelt among us. The nativity stories in Matthew 1:18-24 and Luke1:26 -38 explain how this came about. Notice that John speaks about this in the past tense, writing from beyond the event and looking back on this “and we saw His glory"; a glory that could belong to none other that the only Son of God, a glory that was grace filled and truth filled! |

Part 3 John1:15-18 Verse 15 John 1:15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'" (NASB) When John the Baptist testified about Jesus he speaks of Jesus having a higher rank that himself because though Jesus came after Him he existed before him. Later on Jesus Himself was to say in John 8:58 “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." This is part of what some like to refer to as the mystery of the incarnation and has its reference in the Nativity Stories. By this I mean that the nativity stories explain how Jesus who pre-existed time itself, and who therefore pre-existed Abraham, who was in the beginning with the Father as co-creator of everything that is came to be born into the world He made; as one of us! Verse 16 -18 “For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.” God’s favour comes to us through Jesus Christ so that we receive the free gift of grace abundantly. Moses it was who brought the Law to the People of God which law exacts obedience under penalty while grace and truth bring freedom from the law through the salvific gift of Jesus’ death for us. Verse 18 The prologue ends much as it begins with the reference to Jesus, the Logos and only Son of God as being the only one who has ever seen the Father and who came to make God Known. This same Jesus who at the time of writing the Gospel had already returned to the bosom of the Father. |

This is fine Angel, I am interested in etymology and translations and words in their own right. Just keep on with what you feel the Spirit prompting you to say. Yes Witness does carry the judicial connotation of bearing witness,of being able to know that what John the baptist or John the evangelist saw was Truth and not a lie. My wife and I are going to be away from the computer until next Thursday afternoon. We are having a short break away in the bush. I will have more to say later. Andy |

Yes Angel, They will "look on Him whom they have pierced" zechariah12:10 but not until "the fullness of the gentiles "has been brought in. I believe that Jesus died for everyone right from the start, if tthe Jews had accepted him then they would have brought us in as converts or protlytes anyway, instead it is the other way around. Hi Meusing, Good we need a scholar of the original languages I have a little Demotic Greek, though I have not used it since my son was in kindergarten. We were living in a predominantly Greek area of Sydney at the time and a few of us anglo aussies decide to learn a little, kali imera, oops I do not think I remember much. Is that croswalk the site that has the prayer group and the chat room? If it is I have been there. What is the Swordsearcher bible programme? I have something called Parsons Technology from Cedar Rapids Idaho on disc but it is getting dated. Andy |

1 Corinthians 7:15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. First of all little one I am not a Catholic I merely stated what is believed by millions of those who are. Secondly if I was a Catholic rather than merely an anglocatholic I would have considerable more inspired scripture than most of the other members of this forum. Thirdly and this time is the exception to my rule, I do not believe in criticizing the beliefs of other Christians because I believe that we are called to believe as we do by the Holy Spirit because there is something we need to learn by going that way. So I would ask you to keep that in mind. " You write: THE JEWS, GREEKS AND ROMANS OF THE NT ERA CORRECTLY UNDERSTOOD THAT DIVORCE INDEED IS A DISSOLUTION OF THE MARRIAGE BOND JUST AS THOUGH IT HAD NEVER BEEN." I congratulate you in your perception of this but do not forget that many who approach scripture for answers are formed in the image of their own sociohistorical period rather than that of the times when the Scriptures were written. Your brother in Christ. |
