582 | What the Christian faith is | 2 Cor 13:5 | Radioman2 | 79727
What the Christian faith is and what it means to enter into that faith. Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing the proper fruits of it. Test and prove yourselves [not Christ]. Do you not yourselves realize and know [thoroughly by an ever-increasing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you--unless you are [counterfeits] disapproved on trial and rejected? (AMPLIFIED 2 Corinthians 13:5) 'The Bible says "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!" (2 Cor. 13:5). Well, are you in the faith? Have you examined yourself? It is easy to ask and sometimes difficult to answer. (...) 'You are to examine yourself, to test yourself to see if you are in the faith. This means that you must first know what the Christian faith is and what it means to enter into that faith. Furthermore, you must know and acknowledge that there is only one God in all existence, that Jesus is God in flesh, that you are a sinner, that you need to repent of your sins, and that the only way to find forgiveness is to trust in Jesus alone, by faith alone, through grace alone.' 583 | Test yourselves! Examine yourselves! | 2 Cor 13:5 | Radioman2 | 84327
A hypothetical situation Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing the proper fruits of it. Test and prove yourselves [not Christ]. Do you not yourselves realize and know [thoroughly by an ever-increasing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you--unless you are [counterfeits] disapproved on trial and rejected? (AMPLIFIED 2 Corinthians 13:5) Far be it from me to judge anyone as to whether they are saved or to imply that a given individual is not saved. That's not for me to say. The Scriptures in 2 Corinthians 13:5 instruct the believers to "examine yourselves," not others. So what I write here is not meant as a judgment or condemnation of anyone. Consider this hypothetical situation. IF someone were to express the following doubts and uncertainties, then I would have reason to be concerned. I would urge that person: examine yourself to see whether you are holding to your faith. I would say to that person: you don't have to prove anything to anyone else. But are you yourself convinced that you really are in the faith? Have you had thoughts or feelings such as: "I know that Christians will do that. They dont like for anything to challange their beliefs, even if what they believe is ridiculous. Religious people have always been like that." "Starting to believe that all of what we believe is just plain crazy." "Am greatly wondering why God . . . how can he expect us to understand or rejoice at things so foreign to us. Why involve us . . . The Christian life, seems to be marred by "living to die". Why would we want such a thing, finding it necessary to enter into a life so foreign, that it defies logic. Certainly nothing to be happy about . . ." "I dont even know if I'm really saved anymore." "I have felt love for him [God] at various times, but mostly, I felt he hated me, so at times, I have hated him, because I was totally confused." "I do not love God for his majesty. I dont know why or how to. I guess because I originally came to him because I needed help. I didn't get it . . . In all that time, I have seen very little of God. Sometimes, I'm not even sure that he exist. " If a person were to say such things, then with all humility I would ask him or her: Are you in the faith? Have you examined yourself? Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing the proper fruits of it. Test and prove yourselves [not Christ]. Do you not yourselves realize and know [thoroughly by an ever-increasing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you--unless you are [counterfeits] disapproved on trial and rejected? (AMPLIFIED 2 Corinthians 13:5) 'The Bible says "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!" (2 Cor. 13:5). 'Well, are you in the faith? Have you examined yourself? 584 | Test yourselves! Examine yourselves! | 2 Cor 13:5 | Radioman2 | 84352
Part 1 What kind of things do and do not prove the genuineness of saving faith? '2 Corinthians 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test? 'Churches today are filled with people who hold to a faith that does not save. James referred to this as a "dead faith"-meaning a mere empty profession (James 2:17, 20, 26). Paul wrote to the people in the church at Corinth to test or examine themselves to see if they were truly in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5). As important as it was in Paul's day, how much more important it is for people in our churches today to put their faith to the test and to make sure they have not been deceived. 'But where do we start? By what criteria do we determine true from empty faith? What are the distinguishing marks of genuine saving faith? Surprisingly, there are a number of popular standards or tests that really don't prove the genuineness of one's faith one way or the other. So before we look at the tests that prove genuine faith, let's take a look at some popular tests that neither prove nor disprove the genuineness of one's faith. 'Here is a list of seven conditions that do not prove or disprove the genuineness of saving faith. One can be a Christian and possess these things or one may not be a Christian at all and still possess them. While they don't prove or disprove one's faith, they're important to know and understand so you will not be deceived. 'Seven conditions that do not prove or disprove genuine saving faith. 1. Visible Morality 2. Intellectual Knowledge 3. Religious Involvement 4. Active Ministry 5. Conviction of Sin 6. The Feeling of Assurance 7. A Time of Decision 'These are seven common conditions or tests that don't necessarily prove or disprove the existence of saving faith. What then are the marks of genuine saving faith? Are there some reliable tests from the Word of God that enable us to know for certain whether one's faith is real? Thankfully there are at least nine biblical criteria for examining the genuineness of saving faith.' (http://www.gty.org/IssuesandAnswers/archive/genuinefaith.htm) (to be continued) |

585 | God chose Israel first. Why? | Gal 3:14 | Radioman2 | 82972
Israel chosen for a fourfold mission. Israel was indeed elect (chosen). But chosen for what? For what? When the word chosen (elect) is used in the Bible, it is not in every case used in connection with salvation. "Israel, so named from the grandson of Abraham, was chosen for a fourfold mission: "(1) To witness to the unity of God in the midst of universal idolatry, Deuteronomy 6:4 ; Isaiah 43:10,12,. "(2) to illustrate to the nations the blessedness of serving the true God, Deuteronomy 33:26-29 ; 1 Chronicles 17:20,21 ; Psalms 144:15. "(3) to receive, preserve, and transmit the Scripture, Deuteronomy 4:5-8; Romans 3:1,2. "(4) to produce, as to His humanity, the Messiah, Genesis 3:15; 12:3; 22:18; 28:10-14; 49:10 ; 2 Samuel 7:12-16 ; Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; Matthew 1:1; Romans 1:3. "According to the prophets, Israel, regathered from all nations, restored to her own land and converted, is yet to have her greatest earthly exaltation and glory. Zechariah 12:8." (Scofield, C.I. 587 | is december 25th the day christ was born | Gal 4:4 | Radioman2 | 87726
Is the Jehovah's Witness religion Christian? 'The answer to the question is, "No. It is not Christian." Like all non-Christian cults, the Jehovah's Witness organization distorts the essential doctrines of Christianity. It denies the deity of Christ, His physical resurrection, and salvation by grace. This alone makes it non-Christian. To support its erring doctrines, the Watchtower organization (which is the author and teacher of all official Jehovah's Witness theology), has even altered the Bible to make it agree with its changing and non-Christian teachings. 'Typical with cults that use the Bible to support its position is a host of interpretive errors: 'Taking verses out of their immediate context. 'Refusing to read verses in the entire biblical context. 'Inserting their theological presuppositions into the text. 'Altering the Biblical text to suit their needs. 'Latching onto one verse to interpret a host of others. 'Changing the meanings of words. 'Proclaiming some passages to be figurative when they contradict their doctrines. 'Adding to the Word of God. 'Additionally, the Jehovah's Witness organization requires of its members regular weekly attendance at their "Bible Study" meetings where they are repeatedly indoctrinated with anti-Christian teachings. This is done by reading the Watchtower magazine, following along with what it says, reading the questions it asks, and reciting the answers it gives. In other words, the Watchtower Organization carefully trains its members to let the Organization do their thinking for them. For confirmation of this, please read Does the Watchtower organization control the JW's thinking? (...) 'Primarily, the Jehovah's Witness organization is a mind control organization that uses its people to pass out literature and send in "donations" to the headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. '"Thus the Bible is an organizational book and belongs to the Christian congregation as an organization, not to individuals, regardless of how sincerely they may believe that they can interpret the Bible." The Watchtower, Oct. 1, 1967. p. 587. 'The Watchtower organization of the Jehovah's Witnesses is a non-Christian organization that uses its people to promulgate false doctrines, sell a multitudinous amount of literature, and expand its grip into the lives of its members and their families. 'It is a non-Christian cult.' To read more go to: (www.carm.org/jw/cult.htm) |

589 | Justification for non-Christian Living?? | Gal 5:24 | Radioman2 | 87476
Do not judge? When taken as a whole and diligently compared one to another, the Scriptures do NOT prohibit all types of judging. Do not judge??? Anyone? Anything? Ever? A careful reading of the NT and a study of the passages in which the English word "judge" appears may surprise you. You will find that Christians are to judge between dogs and swine. Also, according to the Scriptures (see below), Christians are to judge: all things, those who are inside the church, the world, angels, what is said or taught, and ourselves. So believers are to judge at least seven different things or groups of people. Do not judge and criticize and condemn others, so that you may not be judged and criticized and condemned yourselves. Matthew 7:1 Amplified New Testament "7:1 Judge not. As the context reveals, this does not prohibit all types of judging (v. 16). There is a righteous kind of judgment we are supposed to exercise with careful discernment (John 7:24). Censorious, hypocritical, self-righteous, or other kinds of unfair judgments are forbidden; but in order to fulfill the commandments that follow, it is necessary to discern dogs and swine (v. 6) from one's own brethren (vv. 3-5)" (1997, Word Publishing). Other Scriptural examples of Christians judging are presented below. (The following Scripture quotations are from the NKJV unless otherwise noted. Words in parentheses ( ) or brackets [ ] are from the text of the Amplified New Testament.) 1 Co 2:15 (ANT)But the spiritual man tries all things [he examines, investigates, inquires into questions, and discerns all things], yet is himself to be put on trial and judged by no one . . . 1 Co 5: 12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge (pass disciplinary judgment [passing censuring sentence on them as the facts require]) those who are inside [the church]? 1 Co 6:2 Do you not know that the saints will judge (and govern) the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge (try) the smallest matters? 1 Co 6:3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels (and pronounce opinion between right and wrong [for them])? How much more, things that pertain to this life? 1 Co 6:5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge ( to decide [the private grievances, disputes, and quarrels]) between his brethren? 1 Co 10: 15 I speak as to wise men; judge (think over and make up your minds) for yourselves [about] what I say. 1 Co 11:31 For if we would judge (searchingly examine) ourselves [detecting our shortcomings and recognizing our own condition], we would not be judged. 1 Co 14:29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge (pay attention and weigh and discern what is said). 2 Co 13:5 (ANT) Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing the proper fruits of it. Test and prove yourselves . . . - - - - - - - - - - - - - NASB 1 Thessalonians 4:8 So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you. |

596 | Avoid quarreling about non-essentials | Eph 4:5 | Radioman2 | 85744
"Avoid quarreling about non-essentials" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 'What is Christianity? ____________________ 'How do you make sense of the different denominations with everybody saying their way is right? Some distinctions to help you avoid quarreling about non-essentials. ____________________ 'There are two different issues. First, if Christianity happens to be true in the broader sense, how do you make sense of the different denominations with everybody saying their way is right? Second, what are the basics of Christianity? 'With regards to the first question, some people like to overplay this issue. "Five thousand different denominations and everybody claims their way is right." It is true that those who belong to a particular denomination do so because they think the details of the teachings in that denomination are accurate. Who would want to belong to a denomination they thought was teaching falsehood? But this question over-emphasizes the differences. 'I found a very helpful metaphor for the person who likes to complain about all the denominations. There are many different baseball teams and each team has a coach. Each coach coaches according to a certain set of principles. Those principles are the ones he thinks are the best for producing the best team. He differs with many coaches with regards to that. He could say that his way is right, but the others think their way is right. The fact is, they are all still playing baseball and they are playing with the same set of fundamental rules. Within the context of those rules, there are a number of variations in emphases and strategies that can be expressed in the way the game is played, but the fundamental game is still the same. Christianity is much like that. There is a fundamental core of beliefs and teachings that identify any particular denomination as being Christian. That is why we call them Christian denominations. It may be that these denominations differ in regards to the finer points--points that may be moot or debatable. 'For instance, how do you baptize a person? Do you dip them, do you sprinkle them, or do you fully immerse them? There are different points of view. People have an idea about what is right and they follow that in their particular denomination. Few would say that it really makes a critical difference whether you are dipped, sprinkled or immersed. Most would say that Christianity teaches baptism and that is something we all agree on. Even if you are baptized in a slightly different way, it doesn't mean the baptism doesn't count. 'Most of the differences in denominations are similar to this kind of thing. Do you worship on Saturday or on Sunday? In the morning or the evening? Do you use instruments or no instruments? Should you have a choir? Should you teach topically or verse by verse? How do you baptize? What are your particular views about the way salvation is mediated by God? How about the Holy Spirit? Do you speak in tongues or not? These are more peripheral issues to the fundamental superstructure of what C. S. Lewis called "mere Christianity." 'When it gets to mere Christianity, the basics and fundamentals are rather few. All Christians agree on the basics and fundamentals. If they don't, they are not called Christians. 'By the way, this is what separates Mormons from Christians. Mormons disagree on those fundamental issues and that is why they have to be called something other than Christian. 'My point simply is that the variations that people point to are somewhat smaller and incidental and are debatable issues. They aren't the kinds of things that undermine the basic truth claims of Christianity as a whole. The fundamental truth claims of Christianity as a whole are rather basic. Christianity stands or falls on those things, and not on the parochial particulars. 'What are the fundamental truth claims of Christianity? 'The particulars of mere Christianity entail four basic things: '1. Your view of God , '2. your view of creation , '3. your view of man , and '4. your view of salvation .' ____________________ What is Christianity? by Gregory Koukl To read more go to: (http://www.str.org/free/commentaries/theology/whatis.htm) |

599 | Slain or knocked down | Eph 4:14 | Radioman2 | 103997
Kathy: Yes, "slain in the Spirit" does cross denominational lines. In some cases there are people whose denomination does not teach or practice slain in the Spirit. Yet there may be individuals within those denominations who do practice it. Many groups who practice slain in the Spirit identify themselves as independents or charismatics. It should be noted that Pentecostal and charismatic are two different words with two different meanings. That is, charismatic is not just another way of saying Pentecostal. Not all charismatics are Pentecostals. I am pleased to see that BradK has provided some excellent information regarding this topic. Grace to you, Radioman2 |

600 | Am I saved until Christ returns? | Phil 1:6 | Radioman2 | 82788
NASB Hebrews 10:39 But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul. AMPLIFIED Hebrews 10:39 But our way is not that of those who draw back to eternal misery (perdition) and are utterly destroyed, but we are of those who believe [who cleave to and trust in and rely on God through Jesus Christ, the Messiah] and by faith preserve the soul. "Fall away." (Hebrews 6:6) "This Gr. term occurs only here in the NT. In the LXX, it was used to translate terms for severe unfaithfulness and apostasy. It is equivalent to the apostasy in [Heb] 3:12. The seriousness of this unfaithfulness is seen in the severe description of rejection within this verse: they re-crucify Christ and treat Him contemptuously (see also the strong descriptions in 10:29). "The 'impossible' of v. 4 goes with 'to renew them again to repentance.' Those who sinned against Christ in such a way had no hope of restoration or forgiveness. The reason is that they had rejected Him with full knowledge and conscious experience (as described in the features of vv. 5,6). With full revelation they rejected the truth, concluding the opposite of the truth about Christ, and thus had no hope of being saved. They can never have more knowledge than they had when they rejected it. They have concluded that Jesus should have been crucified, and they stand with his enemies. "There is no possibility of these verses referring to losing salvation. Many Scripture passages make unmistakably clear that salvation is eternal (compare John 10:27-29; Rom. 8:35,38,39; Phil. 1:6; 1 Pet. 1:4,5). Those who want to make this verse mean that believers can lose salvation will have to admit that it would then also say that one could never get it back again." (Note at Hebrews 6:6, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997. For all Scripture references, see the MacArthur Study Bible.) |
