561 | Extra! Extra! | Gen 2:1 | Lionstrong | 6439
Whenever the news media finds an event that they feel worthy of reporting, they try to answer as many editorial questions as they can about that event. If they consider the event really big, then there follows editorials and possibly other reports of similar events. I look at commentaries on the Bible that way, at least the commentaries on the historical narratives in the Bible. Creation is the first great event of the history of the world. Well, it IS the FIRST event of the history of the world, and it is great, and there would be more questions asked of this event than I could ever imagine. Some questions would be good, others foolish, some genuine, others skeptical, hostile or dubious. The editorial questions begin with what, how, where, when, who, and why. Some of these questions are answered, at least partly, in the narrative so far. Answers to other questions will have to wait until later on in the historical unfolding of this inspired chronical. I can see the headline: "God Creates Universe in Six Days!" "Five days ago the Lord God began a six day project that would culminate with the creation of a creature made in His own image - Man." The reporter would then go on unfold the events of each day. He might end his report with, "It is not yet know why the Lord God created the heavens and the earth and all their hosts, and put Man in charge of the earth, but It will be interesting to see how Man will exercise his dominion." |

562 | "the stars also" | Gen 1:16 | Lionstrong | 6187
"the stars also" It's almost as if Moses were tagging on a footnote, or saying, "Oh yea, He made the stars too." We place much significance on the vastness of the universe, and here Moses treats it almost as an afterthought. The heavens are impressive, but here Moses seems to be saying, "earth is center stage; the stars are only stage props in comparison." The earth may not be the center of the univers, but it's central in God's focus of attention.
563 | In the beginning | Gen 1:1 | Lionstrong | 6186
I love the way the Bible begins, so simple and yet so profound. This is one of the first verses I learned as a child, and it is a truth that I have never stopped relying on.
564 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 6082
Thanks for answering my post, charis. (To this post you need not respond. I honor you request not to discuss a time paradox, BUT......) Doesn't your position create this paradox? (I'm sorry, but I'm typing on a different computer, and for some reason it doesn't keep my paragraph breaks, which would make it easier to read.) You see, I believe that God knows because in His councel He has planned for cetain things to fall out certain ways. (His plan is logically prior to His knowledge, not temporally prior. God is eternal, not time bound as we are.) In the temporal sphere where we live, the same is true, is it not (within the limits of human knowledge)? In chess (as in life) do we plan a move because we know, or do we know the move because we've planned? In terms of micro-manage: It's a loaded term. I would not use it to describe the Lord's providence, but nonetheless His care is very detailed. He knows the number of hairs on our heads, knows every insignificant sparrow that falls to the ground. I for one am thankful for such a God Who pays such close attention to the lives of His people. In the Lamb, Lionstrong |

565 | Bible has 1188 chap's, cntr is Psalm 118 | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 6045
It's more correct to say that the Bible has been divided into so many chapters, depending on what translation you have. The chapters are artificial, that is, man made, not inspired.
566 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 6040
Hi, Cephas, In contrast to my brother, charis, your question is theological, not philosophical, because it is about God. Maybe my brother thinks it's philosophical because it's a logical question. It's a logical question that I'm surprised that someone who believes in free will would ask! Now for someone who believes that the will of man is subject to a soveriegn God, that this God has not adopted a hands-off policy towards man's will, but does what ever He pleases in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps (Ps 135:6), that question would be asked. And if the question does not show that it leads to the contradiction of denying free will to God, then one has to redefine "free" ("God does not have free will in the way we have"). And if you do that, then is it really free? Or are you hiding the contradiction with words? Man's will is not free from the soveriegn God, whoes will is the only truly free will, and fallen man is in even worse shape since his will is enslaved to sin, and in his sin he is dead to all that is toward God. And what sence does it make to say "limited" free will? Does God tie his hands sometimes? When? Why? To admit that God does exercise His perogative as God over the will of man is the same as denying free will. God's salvation is great in Christ, Who is the AURTHOR (the one who initiates) and finisher of our faith. He who BEGAN a good work (of salvation) in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Hi Charis This is my belief too, though the wording here and in Isa 45:7 gives me pause. Thanks, Lionstrong |

Hello, tykelt! You're right. God is righteous. But are you saying that God is under or bound by the law? Is God's righteous nature defined by the law? Respectfully, Lionstrong |

569 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 5988
Your original question is a good one and shows the logical conclusion of positing free will as an explanation for evil. Augustine in the early centuries of Christianity asked the same question. The force of logic and Scripture led him to reject the notion of free will. Free will, so posited, logically leads to denying free will to God. Also, God has not tied His hands with respect to man's will, witness Pharoah, Abimelech, Sihon and others. Respectfully, Lionstrong |

570 | Babies in heaven when they die? | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 5987
This would be a case in point for the death of a believer's child, but not an unbeliever's. I have suffered the lost of a child. So I, too, as a believer take comfort in this passage.
571 | Red, and yellow, black, white, and blue? | Gen 9:19 | Lionstrong | 5982
Noah and his immediate family were the only people who survived the flood. My wife and I have mused that there would have been an even greater variety of human beings living on the earth now had there been no flood. Our first parents had the entire gene pool. All their kids could have been significantly different from each other. In fact there's no reason to believe that Eve had very similar features to Adam. Since Noah was several generations removed from Adam, he probably no longer had the complete gene pool as Adam did. It would have been fasinating to see the variety of people that lived before the flood!
572 | Light before light sources | Gen 1:3 | Lionstrong | 5973
It's interesting that light was created before light sources (sun, moon, stars).
573 | Is whate'er my God ordains right? | Bible general Archive 1 | Lionstrong | 5763
Brother, charis, Let me try to add a little clarity Responsible defined: 1. Liable to be required to give account, as of one's actions or of the discharge of a duty or trust. 2. Involving personal accountability or ability to act without guidance or superior authority: a responsible position within the company. 3. Being a source or cause. This come from the American Heritage Dictionary. These are not all the definitions, but do you notice the first one? In a dictionary, the first definition is either the most used meaning or the original meaning. Now, I understand that the word can be used to mean cause, but the first definition is to be required to give an account. The first definition, of course does not apply to God. He answers to no one. And that's why in my above posting I said that God is not responsible. And that is also why I asked JV how he was defining the word. How can anyone disagree that God is the first cause of all things? Granted, God didn't cause Satan to tempt Eve, He didn't cause Cain to murder Abel, or the low lifes to bear false witness against Naboth the Jezreelite. God is not the author of sin, but why don't people understand that had there been no creation there would have been no serpent and Eve, no Cain and Abel, and no Ahab and Naboth? To put it in another way, God is the cause of evil, the ultimate cause, not the immediate cause. Yours in the Sovereign Christ, Lionstrong |

574 | A Philosophy According to Christ | Col 2:8 | Lionstrong | 5638
This verse is misquoted to say let no one take you captive through philosophy, but Paul doesn't say that. He says philosophy... according to the tradition of men, etc., rather than according to Christ. So there can be a philosophy according to Christ, a philosophy as Paul says that takes every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. In the nineteenth century Christian thinkers called this philosophy Christian theism. Today they call it a Christian or Biblical world and life view. The objective is the same, to see and interpret all of life, every endevor of human interest, occupation and study, from the perspective of God's revelation to Man, the Holy Scritures, and to bring all of life under the lordship of Christ. |

575 | Should homosexuals be ordained? | Rom 1:27 | Lionstrong | 5620
Dear Johnny, Your statement that the wrong is “what the person does, i.e. sexual acts with someone of the same sex” is a half-truth, and as such is false. Homosexual sins are not those that are physical only. If a person is homosexual in their heart, it is also wrong. The Bible says, “such WERE some of you.” Rahab was a harlot before she became a believer in the God of Israel. When she joined the people of God she stopped being a harlot, got married and became an ancestor of Christ. Jesus saves us from our enslavement to sin. One who is saved should no longer be a homosexual. If he is he is not a believer and is not qualified for any position in the Church of Christ. Lionstrong |

576 | What obligates to believe earth spinds? | Josh 10:12 | Lionstrong | 5613
Thank you, Noland You put a lot of thought and time into your response to my comments, and I appreciate the courtesy of the answer you’ve given. Now, to respond to your thoughtful answer: The question is not whether science can determine if the events recorded in Josh. 10 occurred; it is how a faith in science influences our understanding or misunderstanding of those events. Some of us believe that it is a scientific fact that our solar system is heliocentric. The belief in this scientific doctrine when imposed on this passage of Scripture forces one to believe that the sun and moon did not stand still. Some of us, I think, have an unquestioned faith in science (for them it should be spelled with a capital S). To even question that the solar system is heliocentric is anathema. Now, compared to reading nature, it’s much easier to read the Bible to find truth. How do we know that Copernicus found the truth about the solar system when he concluded that it was heliocentric? Are scientists the only qualified readers of general revelation? Can’t a layman pick up this book too and question whether the scientist got it right? God’s special revelation is written down. General revelation isn’t. How is it possible to get all but the broadest truths from that revelation? Scripture itself tells us what some (if not all) of those broad truths are, when it talks about God’s glory and man's moral responsibility. And how many scientists have properly read their moral responsibility? Because the interpretation of the general revelation by scientists is not infallible, we are under no obligation to unquestioningly accept (believe) their conclusions. We are free to examine their physical, mathematical, and archeological proofs, and to withhold judgement until satisfied. Science has shown itself to be false. The nature of truth is eternal. And it does not change. What scientific “truth” two hundred years ago is still true today? So, whereas I believe that there is a general revelation, I do not believe in science as that general revelation. We teach our children in a song how they can know the love of Jesus. It is by the same revelation that we are to teach them to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Lionstrong |

579 | Where's the line? | 2 Tim 2:23 | Lionstrong | 5529
Thanks Ortho, What you said sounds good. As to human free will, I don't think that this verse is the place to discuss it. If you find a verse or passage where that subject is appropriate, attach a note to this note to tell me where it is, and I'll meet you there. Grace to you. Lionstrong |

580 | A silly question? | Josh 10:12 | Lionstrong | 5524
Dear charis: another follow up: If I have denied the earth's rotation, I have over stated my position. My position is that on the basis of sola scriptura I am not OBLIGATED to believe in the earth's rotation. I am only obligated to understand and believe God's word, which I know is the truth. And to be clear thinking Bible students we should be aware of the beliefs or assumptions we are bringing to the understanding of God's word. Thanks, charis Lionstrong |
