Theresa, Does God heal us from the wound of sin which leads to death which we all suffer? Indeed He does, but not by healing us physically, nor by curing us natirally, but rather supernaturaly. Emmaus |

heisthe1, How can we conform ourselves to Christ and take up our cross daily to follow Him without suffering? "Get the behind me Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God, does but as men do.... Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever looses his life will save it and whoever wishes to save his life will loose it." Matt 16:23-24. No cheap grace! Free but not cheap. If we want to follow Him into glory we must follow Him into suffering and death. Emmaus |

heisthe1, You may not believe in "the suffering doctrine" but Jesus did. It is his doctrine. St Paul speaks of your position here: "For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart." Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 1 Cor 1:18-25 And Jesus in addition to telling us we must take up up our cross daily and follow him also says: "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, "A servant is not greater than his master." If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. It is to fulfil the word that is written in their law, "They hated me without a cause." But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning. I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do this because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you of them. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, "Where are you going?" But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. John 15:18-16:6. Emmaus |

1349 | Here's what Jesus said before he died. | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 93951
Truthfinder, In an effort to help you find the truth, please know that in the original manuscripts there no punctuation. For 2,000 years the Church has always taught that the thief Jesus spoke to on the cross would be with Him in Paradise that very day. Yours is the novel interpretation and novels as we know are fiction. Emmaus |

1351 | Here's what Jesus said before he died. | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 93957
Truthfinder, Do you really believe that all those martyrs in the early centuries of the church were willing, almost anxious to undergo martyrdom just so they could become unconcious in the grave? We know from their own writing, indeed even Paul's in his letters (2 Cor 5:8)that they anticipated something better, that is being present to the Lord. And the book of Revaltion makes it clear that they expected those saints who had already gone home to the Lord to return with Him at the second coming, because they were already with Him. One has to willfully ignore an awful lot of Scripture and other early Christian testimony to come to any other conclusion. Emmaus |

Truthfinder, I must have mistakenly gotten the impression from your post regarding the punctuation in Jesus comment to the thief on the cross that you were implying the soul sleep teaching of the Jehovah Witnesses. But you say otherwise and I take it you do not subscribe to that particular teaching. Is that correct? If so I was mistaken and apologize. Emmaus |

1353 | Here's what Jesus said before he died. | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 93983
Truthfinder, I believe that animals have souls, but not ones that are rational or immortal, only souls that are the animating principle of life. Please see my previous post # 93949 on how the term soul is used in various ways. Emmaus |

1354 | Here's what Jesus said before he died. | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 94025
Truthfinder, I did not miss your question and I undestand it. My short answer is yes, animals do have spirits in the simple OT sense of the breath of life, but not immortal souls as the common usage understands regarding men who also have the breath of life until they die. The subject of how the words for spirit and soul are used in the OT and NT covers several pages under both "soul" and "spirit" in my copy of Dictionary of the Bible by John L. McKenzie. I am afraid it would really aggravate my Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to try and cover all the finer points of the subject covered there and elsewhere. I only wish it was online so I could cut and paste but it is not. Emmaus |

1356 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 109419
Searcher, First I note that Luke 23:46 says "Into your our hands I commit my spirit." It does not say "He went to heaven.", nor does it say exactly where his spirit went. Is not God omnipresent? How do you deal with all the other passages cited and with the ones below? Ps 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. Ps 18:5 The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. Ps 30:3 O LORD, You have brought up my soul from Sheol; You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit. Ps 31:17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call upon You; Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol. Ps 49:14 As sheep they are appointed for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; And the upright shall rule over them in the morning, And their form shall be for Sheol to consume So that they have no habitation. Ps 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, For He will receive me. Selah. Ps 55:15 Let death come deceitfully upon them; Let them go down alive to Sheol, For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst. Ps 86:13 For Your lovingkindness toward me is great, And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. Ps 88:3 For my soul has had enough troubles, And my life has drawn near to Sheol. Ps 89:48 What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah. Ps 116:3 The cords of death encompassed me And the terrors of Sheol came upon me; I found distress and sorrow. Ps 139:8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. Emmaus |

1357 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 109461
Searcher, "Where is the Father?" I presume you want the answer "Our Father who art in Heaven." But Acts 17:28 also says "In him we live and move and have our being." And Psalm 139:8 says "If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there." "Is not God omnipresent ... cite Scritpure." See above citations." "Do the verses you cited say it is Christ?" Acts 2:25-27; 13:34 cites Psalm 16:9-10 in reference to Jesus and even says that it refers to Jesus, not David. Of course if you do not accept "sleep" as a euphemism for death as it is often used and if you do not believe that being raised from the dead is the same as being raised from among the dead but merely means being raised from the tomb, then we should end our discussion now having agreed to disagree. 1359 | Why did Jesus Go to Hell | 1 Pet 3:19 | Emmaus | 109619
Searcher, "What was the need to preach?" I think the answer to your question is in 1 Peter 4:4-6. Christians are often condemned by the word for not entering into its sins. So also with the righteous before Jesus came. So when Jesus went and preached to the dead in Hades, the just were vindicated in the face of the enemies who had condemned them in their life here on earth. "In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God" 1 Peter 4:4-6 Emmaus |
