4781 | Who wrote the book of James? | James 1:1 | EdB | 53714
jw1 My friend I'm not inventing people here I'm merely reporting what is accepted as fact. There are 4 James in the NT, James the Less son of Alphaeus seen in Matt 10:3, Act 1:13, James the father of Judas not Iscariot seen in Luke 8:16 and Act1:13 James the brother of John sons of Zebedee seen in Matt 4:21 and James the oldest half brother of Jesus seen in Mark 6:3 and written to the epistle of James. If you have an argument with that it is with Dr. John MacArthur and his Bible page 1924, , KJV Bible Commentary, Nelson Study Bible, NASB reference bible, International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Dr. Merrill Ungers, Easton's bible Dictionary, etc. and also Church fathers like Jerome. I'm aware that Matthew Henry says the writter of the this book is James the Less cousin of Jesus but most scholars believe James the less the son of Mary that you see in Mark 15:40 was the wife Alphaeus who was also called Cleopas. While he could have been cousin there is no proof. However James the writter of the epistle is James the Just Matt 13:55 half brother of Jesus. Having studied this subject myself to some extent I conclude with this conclusion, however if you disagree you disagree with the experts, take your argument to them. EdB |

4782 | Wisdom - Salvation in Christ? | James 1:5 | EdB | 121107
mommapbs First I did not write that it was quote from John MacArthur. Yes I think God uses the results, consequences or trials as you called them of our sin confessed or unconfessed to teach us truths we need to learn. Unbelief is a trial we all experience at times in times of our life. When we are given serious bad news usually it causes us to question nearly everything. However I think how we handle that doubt depends on whether we really trust God or are double minded. I once knew a man that was diagnosed with cancer. The really sad part of this story is that at his age the cancer could have been controlled and he would be able to live out the rest of days of his life with little or no complications. He refused all effort to control his cancer. His testimony was he was healed. However a week later I heard him testify that the barley green he was drinking was overcoming the cancer. To me that was double minded. I know he was rush at least once to the hospital in unbearable pain from the cancer that he would have never had to experience had he simply followed his doctors orders. I’m not sure he learned anything from that but I did. I learned God will not share his glory with anyone or even Barley Green. I also learned that if medical science has something to offer we should take advantage of it. God can still heal us while we are taking medication to control our disease. I also learned not to be so bull headed as to put myself into painful situations when God provides a way around it. EdB |

4783 | What is Faith Without Works - Part 2 | James 2:14 | EdB | 58187
Aristarchus I agree with nearly everything you write here except the second from the last paragraph where you said, "Now I ask again, what works are we performing? Are they the works of Jesus? Are they "greater works than this" because he "went to be with the father"? Here is the ministry of Jesus. He healed. He preached (gospel of salvation through Him alone). He fed the hungry. We could go into further detail but that mostly covers His ministry." The signs of healing and feeding the hungry were really not the works of Jesus, his work was revealing the Father to the world and to provide the perfect sacrifice. The signs were validations of who he was, of His divinity. For us to do greater works is not to (physically) heal more people, or to (physically)feed more hungry people but rather to tell more people about the availability of salvation through Jesus Christ. So that they are spiritually healed and spiritually feed. If we are faithfully proclaiming the gospel in the market places then we are faithfully about the Father's work. EdB |

4784 | What is Faith Without Works - Part 2 | James 2:14 | EdB | 58321
Aristarchus Again I agree with you except my comment was not meant to indicate a disagreement with healing, but rather a concern on the importance of healing. Today's church is focused on the physical and manifestations rather than the spiritual and God. Many consider a physical healing more important than salvation. The balance has been lost and I consider this a very serious situation for the church today. EdB |

4786 | Tension between faith and works | James 2:14 | EdB | 243323
James 2:14-26 1. REAL FAITH IS NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU SAY. "What good is it, my brothers, if a man CLAIMS to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such "faith" save him? (vs. 14) Matt. 7:20-23 2. REAL FAITH IS NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU FEEL. "Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?" (vs. 15-16) "If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?" 1 John 3:17 Also 3:14-16, 4:7-20 (vs. 17) 3. REAL FAITH IS NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU THINK. "But someone will say, You have faith - I have deeds. SHOW ME your faith without deeds, and I will SHOW YOU my faith by what I do." (vs. 18) 2 Cor. 5:17 4. REAL FAITH IS NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU BELIEVe. "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that and shudder!" (vs. 19) 5. REAL FAITH IS SOMETHING YOU DO. Illustrations: Two very different people * Abraham (vs. 20-24) * Rahab (vs. 25) 2 Cor. 13:5 "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves." Teaching I came across author unknown or long forgotten. |

4787 | Difference in believing? | James 2:19 | EdB | 86993
mommapbs Bravo! The word believe in the greek is "Pisteuo", it has a far more intense meaning than our word "believe". In the Greek is means to become dependant on your belief, to be willing to stake your life on it. In James 2:19 it talks about what your saying. James 2:19-20 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble! [20] But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Just believing is not enough the demons believe because they have seen God, it is obeying God that makes the difference. To become dependant on Jesus for our salvation, trusting in Him and Him alone. 4788 | Have we chosen freely? | James 2:19 | EdB | 87037
Colin God picks everyone for salvation and allows them the choice to accept or reject His love. The reformation had to develop a legal reason to oppose Rome. Remember at the time Rome controlled both the political as well as the religious world. To this they had to show that Rome's teaching was in error. Hence they conceived predestination. They knew if something was repeated and talked about enough it would become the accepted belief, hence they had the hole they were looking for to attack Rome’s teaching. Remember they had to present their case to the King of France who really didn’t care about Rome’s injustices, he would only have to deal with what could be proven. Calvin a lawyer of the time only saved about year before this wrote his Institutes of Christianity to make a legal case showing the virtue of the Reformation. Many have taken this legal brief word smithed by one the best as a religious document detailing authentic church doctrine. Because it suited them and played into the reformers hand they allowed this to continue unopposed for about 100 years. At this time many stood up and said enough your making God out to be a tyrant, a puppetmaster rather than being the loving God He is. Unfortunately the tide of opinion had swung and many of these men met their maker at the end of ropes or tied to a stake. It wasn’t until the Bible became common place that man could truly understand the nature of God. That He didn’t create us to manipulate us but rather to draw us to Him in response to the love he pours out upon us. He honors men and women that maintain the faith in him. The predistinationalist would have us believe he is honoring men and women that had not other choice than follow Him. Do some searches this subject has been discussed at great length and serves little purpose repeating. Those that hold to predestination refuse to view the evidence in light of the whole scripture choosing to focus on a few verse that seem to confirm their position. EdB |

4789 | Have we chosen freely? | James 2:19 | EdB | 87064
Colin Rome's stance was one that believed Christ died for the world. The "enlighthen" philosophers of the reformation conceived the notion it became the basis upon which they would launch their attacks of Roman theology. Their hope was to so display Roman theology in such serious error that the political/social powers would be forced to allow recognition of the reformation’s right to exist and to question Rome’s teachings. 4790 | Have we chosen freely? | James 2:19 | EdB | 87072
Most Reformation doctrine was identical to the Roman doctrine but then Calvin and others invented the exclusive and elitist philosophy of predestination. In it they say Christ only died for a chosen few. And if you are chosen you must accept salvation. The reformation started by men that saw the sale of indulgences, prayers for the dead, etc. as something that had to be changed. Instead of working within the church they allowed a separation to take place. However once the break was established many issues got lost in the yelling and shouting. The reformation was in trouble, the King of French was becoming less and less tolerant. The reformers hired a young lawyer with a recognized genus for word smithing. This young man was Calvin and even though he was only saved less than a few years was given the responsibility of punching glaring holes into Rome’s doctrine and to write a legal brief defending the reformers to the King of France. Calvin stumbled upon the words predestined and elected and having no formal training in the original languages picked up on these and developed what is known as Calvinism today. I believe it was an honest mistake on his part, but one that perpetuated by less honorable men in the interest of their cause. These that forward the teaching ignore or try to alter the meaning of passages that clearly state Jesus died for the sins of the world, that God desires that none should perish and that all should be saved. Overlooking basic truths such as John 3:16 which whosoever will believe. Calvin cobbled together a doctrine that only a select few are chosen by God for salvation. That those selected have to accept salvation and can not resist. That man is to sinful to know that he needs salvation therefore non elect go to their destruction unaware they have rejected God. As the word of God become available to more and more men that studied the scriptures this teaching was seen for what it is, an aberration of the truth. Today less than 28 percent of protestant believers hold to any part of Calvinism and a much smaller percentage hold to predestination and man’s forced acceptance of salvation. Today there are those that try to dress it up calling it “reformation theology”, but don’t let their attempt to rewrite history confuse you. This is not reformation theology this was a man made philosophy of known as Calvinism. EdB |

4793 | Christianity requires work | James 2:23 | EdB | 243399
Abraham's salvation was based on works. His belief in God and conformity to God's will (obedience) Careful of those that say you are saved but do not have to believe in God or conform to God's will. Many try to make easy believism a truth but it is not. Living a Christian life is hard and requires us to turn our backs on the things of this world. Many will say oh you can do this or that, just do it in moderation. No man tangled in sin ever meant to do so. They believed the lie of the adversary that they were strong and do it in moderation. |

4794 | Christianity requires work | James 2:23 | EdB | 243403
Ah we have a seemingly conflict of scripture. One place it says Abraham believed and was obedient to God and this was accounted to him as being righteous. Then we have Paul saying Abraham's fleshly works did nothing. This is where the Reformed philosophy manufactured by man starts it's death spiral. They want to suggest that since they eliminated responsibility of man that man's destiny isn't effected by anything man does. Then they go on and say before man can believe God and be obedient to God he must be made to do so by God. That is being controlled much like a puppet. Notice in Job Satan never suggested this to God. satan never said of course Job loves you, You elected him to that. Notice there is no mention of anything like that. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to bring conviction to man. Then man has a choice to dismiss this conviction or as John 3:16 says believe in his salvation from those things he is convicted of. Then as in John 3:17 clearly says this belief and obedience to God is accounted to his righteousness. No matter what you say you can not ignore that passage. That has to tell you that you are not interrupting what Paul is really saying. Paul is saying we can, not make ourselves righteous. He never said we don't have do anything, never said we do not have to believe and be obedient to God. If the God is really our Lord then it is contradiction of terms not to live obedient to that Lord. We have to believe in Him or obedience is hollow. Both of these things are things man must do. The warped philosophy of Calvinism has so convoluted the teachings of Christ, so instead of loving their enemy they sentence him to the stake. Instead of living Holy many advocate Abortion, Homsexuality, Alcohol, and other unrighteous styles of life. They have fallen for the lie they are special and can live beyond the requirements of being lead of Holy Spirit, all they need is their own intellect and logic to understand and explain scripture to fit their philosophy. Even Satan knew better when he challenged God over God's servant Job. |

4795 | Christianity requires work | James 2:23 | EdB | 243404
Your interpretation of What Pail was saying renders Satan as a non factor. Big mistake. Scripture describes him as a roaring lion, no one should ever ignore a roaring lion. Scripture is the accuser of the saints. Why accuse someone that has no responsibility for their destiny? Scripture says Satan is the tempter. Why tempt someone that has no choice? The damaged Reformed philosophy rings hollow when you look at the Book Of Job. Satan accused Job of loving God for what God gave him. Yet Satan never said what do you expect you elected Job to love you and he has no choice and nothing that I do can make him lose his salvation. The Book of Job should show anyone how damaged the Reformed Philosophy is. Or do you ignore James citing Job as example of preseverance to accomplish God's will? Sounds like Job had a major part in his blessing. |

4796 | Does James 2 contradict Romans 4? | James 2:24 | EdB | 112349
Rowdy Just to keep the record straight let me quote from Frank Boyd Hebrews and the General Epistles Gospel Publishing house. "The emphasis which James puts on works led Martin Luther to reject the epistle as “a right strawy epistle, having no true evan-gelical character.” We can readily understand Luther’s reaction in the light of his marvelous deliverance from “salvation by works.” His conclusion was drawn through hasty views of the letter. But years afterwards he saw it differently; he saw that James does not exalt works as against faith, but works as the evidence of faith, and produced by it." EdB |

4797 | Does James 2 contradict Romans 4? | James 2:24 | EdB | 112354
Rowdy There are many things the reformers backed away from or embraced that aren't readily known, because they don't serve the desires of those that think they know the answers. I love this new quote I found today. "The most learned, acute and diligent student cannot, in the longest life, obtain an entire knowledge of this one volume. The more deeply he works the mine, the richer and more abundant he finds the ore; new light continually beams from this source of heavenly knowledge, to direct the conduct and illustrate the work of God and the ways of men; and he will at last leave the world confessing that the more he studied the Scriptures, the fuller conviction he had of his own ignorance and of their inestimable value." Sir Walter Scott I'm particularily taken with the last part because it is so very true!! EdB |

4799 | How can we know if a teacher is teaching | James 3:1 | EdB | 55354
The Bible is Right You said, “But today if you questioned a teacher of the word of God, they say you are judging them, Matt 7:1-2 and most get offended.” I would find another teacher!!! Look at Paul’s reaction when the Berean’s checked him out Acts 17:11, He commended them Acts 17:11! Any true teacher should encourage his students to check him out. Teachers that hide behind scripture to keep you from checking them out have something to hide. Now if you find something wrong with their teaching I think you need to go to them in private and let them set the record straight. No one wants or likes to be corrected publicly . Also the teacher is scripture twisting if he is saying Matt 7:1-2 says do not judge. It is saying to not judge hypocritically or in other words make sure you judge others with the same standard you want to be judged by. Also we are not to judge whether a person is truly saved or not. Only God know the heart. God has certainly called us to judge teaching, the scriptures tell us in the last days there will be many false teachers. God also has given us the gift of discernment, that many refuse to use, to do just that, to judge what we are being told. Never buy “I’m right and don’t you question me” because that person is going to lead you astray. EdB |

4800 | You are a teacher of God's word? Does th | James 3:1 | EdB | 55460
Christian7 Alas I'm afraid it is true, there are some that use another’s sermon instead of their own. However there is another use for checking another’s sermon and that is to get illustrations and applications. Many preachers have staff writers and researchers digging for those great illustrations. I use to sit in awe wondering how and where did they find their material for all their great examples. At the time I was thinking they must read non stop. Then one day I learned they had paid staff that did nothing else but search media to find that perfect illustration. As for a preacher listening to a tape and then trying to preach the same message, if he is trying to perfect his skills I say great. If he is doing it because he is too lazy to come up with his own sermon that might be a problem. Understand today a preacher is not compared to the preacher down the street but rather to the guy on TV or Radio. The TV preacher has probably perfected his skill over the years, and has a team of staff writers and researchers. Since most don’t do pastorial care they can spend hours each day rehearsing the next sermon making sure their timing and diction is perfect. Plus they obviously have some natural skill or they wouldn’t be on TV in the first place. It can be a daunting task for a man has very little in the way of research material, is so busy fixing the roof of the church he can’t read even the newspaper, is going to the hospital to sit all hours of night with a dying saint, has to visit each member at least once a week and has to mow the church lawn for Sunday. Many times setting aside time for study only to find his plans changed by a funeral or some other emergency. Plus he is probably paid less than a tenth of what the man is he is being compared to. I write non of this to justify using another's sermon put to offer a point of view that many times we don't think about. Before we criticize another we need to walk a mile in their shoes. EdB |
