1 | why do singles think they need a mate? | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 199206
Yes, I read the chapter you are referring to which is a chapter dealing with marriage and relationships. Your original question was why do singles think they need a 'mate' when they get saved? Once again, I don't feel every single thinks this away. I know some that are perfectly happy without a spouse and feel fulfilled. They live an active productive life in the church and are valuable members of our church body. Yes, with marriage comes some additional 'burdens' a single person doesn't have. This is stated in the scripture. Yet also with marriage, comes some blessings that a single person will never have, such as children. Do people get married for the wrong reason? Yes. I will address my own marriage, my wife and I dated for about four years before we got married. We didn't rush anything, we let our relationship grow, we have a beautiful daughter and we have been happily married for 13 years. As we have both grown closer to the Lord, our relationship has grown closer to each other. I feel that you can be productive, happy, and fulfilled Christian married or single. Each will have challenges. Paul does say if you aren't up to the challenge of lust, then get married. Sex isn't a bad thing, it is a beautiful thing for a married couple. Maybe someone else can help answer your question, because I guess I'm just having a hard time grasping what you are trying to get at or searching for? |

As an additional footnote, according to Expository Dictionary of Bible Words, 'dog' used in Deuteronomy 23:18 is referring to a male prostitute.
4 | Others have no right to judge only GOD!! | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 201717
Your post seems to deal with a few different topics, without giving any scriptures for proof. The first is public prayer. The passage you are referring to is from Matthew 6:5. The research I have done on the passage has to do with the spirit the men were praying in. Their prayer was not for God, but to gain the public approval of men. Basically they were wanted to show everyone how ‘religious’ they were. As the scripture says, they got their full reward. If you read Luke 18:10-14 you will see this explained. The purpose of prayer is not to gain public approval for us, but pray should be for God. Does this mean we shouldn’t pray in public places? No, Matthew 18:19, 20 actually encourages us to pray with one another. The second topic I see is faith. You make the statement that “it's nobody's business if or how you believe in God”. It is every Christian’s concern if a person believes in God and His saving grace. Matthew 28:16-20 tells us that we are to go into the entire world and preach the Gospel. The third topic was judging. You are correct that there is scripture that warns us about judging one another. Yet I have seen this taken to the other extreme where in the name of ‘not judging’ Christians are unwilling to call sin, sin. The Bible gives us some very clear standards of what sin is, such as adultery, homosexuality, thieves, drunkard, (1 Co 6:9,10) and Christians should never fear challenging sin. You are also correct, in the end, it is the final judgment that will determine the eternal resting place of your soul. I encourage you take some serious time to research and pray about what the Bible says on your beliefs, I think you will find that they are not matching up with what is Biblically correct. Brad |

7 | Prophet touched on the rib by God? | Bible general Archive 4 | BMyers | 202976
Interesting, I don't know what is more interesting, the fact I remembered something correctly or the definition of prophet. I always thought of a 'prophet' as someone who was writing or saying inspired words from God. Never really thought of it as someone that has had a direct communication from God. So does that mean everyone Jesus talked to in the New Testament is a ‘prophet’? (There I go thinking too much again.) Thanks for the info, Brad |

Not a problem, I'm just glad we got it all figured out. You brought up an interesting point that we have been dealing with in our Wednesday evening Bible Study and that is dealing with translations and the correct interpretation of the Bible. Anyway, I could go on, but I guess I should get back to work. Brad |

I don't think most (myself included in that category not long ago) how subtle little changes in the way you phrase something can make a huge difference in what it truly means or how the meaning can be changed. I think many good Christian people who are trying to live by the Bible don't completely understand how important that we make sure we understand and grasp the meaning of the Bible and not try to make the Bible mean what we want it to. Our Pastor has such a passion for this and I'm very thankful that he does, because up to six months ago I wouldn't have approached the Word of God in that manner. I still have ALOT to learn and I'm excited! A week doesn't go by without me learning something new. Now I have to get back to work. Brad |

I have found researching the Bible to be a fascinating and faith building study. Being raised in a Christian home, I just always took it for a fact the Bible was God’s Word and never crossed my mind to think anything less. As I grew older, I found myself like you, unable to answer the questions that were proposed to me about the Bible and the origin of it. I read several books on the Bible and the history of Christianity. The more I learned about the Bible and how it has come to exist in its modern format, the more confidence I have in it. Here is a few of the book I have read on the Bible What is the Bible All About? Halley’s Bible Handbook How We Got the Bible |

I'm not a Bible scholar, but I would say no. The reason being, in Leviticus I believe it is dealing more with the sex, than actually viewing of the body. "Uncover her nakedness" is a euphemism, if my understanding of the OT Hebrew is correct, that would be dealing with having sexual relationship. I don't believe that Ham had or tried to have sex with his father, which is the reason why I think it has more to do with respect and how he dealt with finding his father in this state than the actually seeing his father naked. Aileen, you may need to do a little more research. Reading three different commentaries, the sin was not seeing him naked, nor does Lev 18 talk about seeing them "undressed" but the phrase is "uncover their nakedness", which in two books I have checked, both concur that this was referring to sexual relationship, not the actual nakedness. Taken from MHC: III. Ham's impudence and impiety: He saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren, v. 22. To see it accidentally and involuntarily would not have been a crime; but, 1. He pleased himself with the sight, as the Edomites looked up on the day of their brother (Obad. 12), pleased, and insulting. Perhaps Ham had sometimes been himself drunk, and reproved for it by his good father, whom he was therefore pleased to see thus overcome. Note, It is common for those who walk in false ways themselves to rejoice at the false steps which they sometimes see others make. But charity rejoices not in iniquity, nor can true penitents that are sorry for their own sins rejoice in the sins of others. 2. He told his two brethren without (in the street, as the word is), in a scornful deriding manner, that his father might seem vile unto them. It is very wrong, (1.) To make a jest of sin (Prov. xiv. 9), and to be puffed up with that for which we should rather mourn, 1 Cor. v. 2. And, (2.) To publish the faults of any, especially of parents, whom it is our duty to honour. Noah was not only a good man, but had been a good father to him; and this was a most base disingenuous requital to him for his tenderness. Ham is here called the father of Canaan, which intimates that he who was himself a father should have been more respectful to him that was his father. |

Matthew Henry Commentary, sorry, I should of spelled it out. Brad |

Quick definition, a commentary is a person (or could be down by a group of people) opinion about a subject. There are numerous commentaries on the market, some good, some not so good. You have large multi-volume sets and shorter one book commentaries. Matthew Henry Commentary was written in early 1700s (I believe 1706). It is freely available online to read and review and that is why I selected it. A commentary, cannot be used to replace the Word of God, but it can help at times to bring some understanding. The Bible is the ultimate authority, the commentary is a personal opinion of the Bible. I'm trying to keep this post short, but having little luck with that. Basically, a well written commentary is a good resource to help further you Bile study, but cannot be used to replace the Bible. I have several commentaries and will refer to them once I have drawn my opinion on a passage to see how it lines up with the Bible scholars. Hope I was able to explain it well enough. Brad |
