3 Is believing in ransubstantiation a sin? Bible general Archive 4 EdB 235440
I realize percentage of people believing in something does not mean it is correct or not. However the correct or mistaken belief in something is a fair distance from being sinful.

If a person’s belief is wrong but doesn’t oppose the basics of Christian orthodoxy I don’t see that person as being sinful, only wrong, mistaken or deceived.

That said there are actually many views of Eucharist or Communion of which transubstantiation, consubstantiation, and memorialism are three. Of these three
I could only see memorialism as being sinful if it is the incorrect interpretation. I say this because memorialism tends to reduce the Eucharist or Communion down in meaningfulness which I can see as being counter to what Jesus intended.

The fact the Catholics hold to transubstantiation says that 60 percent of the people in the world that call themselves Christians agree with that interpretation or understanding. That leaves the 40 percent divided over consubstantiation, memorialism and I contend that there are even other views more moderate than memorialism.

In any case the percentage of scholars and theologians and students are probably equally represented by the population numbers, so this means that approximately 60 percent of the Biblical Scholars, Theologian, and serious students of the scripture believe transubstantiation is the correct understanding for the way the Eurcharist or Communion should be handled.

Does that mean if they are wrong they are in sin? I don’t think so I think that if they are wrong it means they are confused or have been deceived but I can think of no sin they have committed by their belief.

So I stand by my original answer is it a sin to believe in transubstantiation? No but it could be a belief in misinterpretation and unless it was intentional that would not be a sin that I can find defined in scripture.
