Before we get to tough on Jonah, we need to realize that Jonah had some very logical reasons for not wanting to go to Nineveh:

1. These people were enemies of Israel. Jonah would have rather seen Almighty God wipe them out rather then offer them the chance to repent.

2.From where Jonah received this message, it was about 800 miles to Nineveh. That was a very long journey in that day.

3.He may be risking his life by even approaching these people.

His Heavenly Father was well aware of these. Like Jonah, our excuses do not excuse us from doing what He has called us to.

At any rate Jonah ran in the opposite direction, away from Nineveh. So with the logic of man, he ran. Got on a boat. The storm arose and it looked like the boat was going to sink. The men on the boat needed relief and after Jonah told them of his disobedience. They threw him overboard.

Jonah 1:17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah.

The word prepared in this verse literally means assign or to appoint. Here this great fish was swimming along and the creator of the universe looked down and saw that Jonah had gone off in the wrong direction and was about to be thrown overboard and He assigned this fish to offer Jonah relief from drowning. It is a good thing that this fish didn’t respond the same way that Jonah had.

•Even in Jonah’s disobedience, in His mercy God offered relief to Jonah in the form of a “Great fish”
